Dental/orthodontia is a strong investment for your kids if you're trying to help them jump to a higher economic level than you could give them. It's shitty but when lots of people see messed up teeth they think "burnout who doesn't care and neither has nor deserves a good job."
In the US, people who are poor can get free health insurance and this includes dental. Granted, it doesn't cover everything and can be very limited in some aspects but kids usually get quite a bit covered.

And dialogue. And stories. The father is the most frustrating, pompous, arrogant, meddling, holier-than-thou @s$ in TV history. And they think there’s nothing wrong with the way they portray him. Furious and disgusted with your wife of a few decades you have 6 kids with because she smoked pot in college… I mean, that face he makes… and “How could you drop a bomb on me like that…”. My lord… How did people enjoy this show? Also, Lucy notices Shelby BARELY EATS then always runs to the bathroom… But then it turns out she goes to the bathroom to brush her teeth, and the truth is that she’s actually STARVING due to poverty… Wait.
Please just bring this series back already. This and Zach Morris Is Trash. Please. Enough time has passed. Enough people have made it clear they want them back. I can’t think of any reason why they should not come back.

But I do love how a not-at-all subtle show about church let that line slip in where he talks about a cult & the blonde kid is like "kind of like church" and I'm thinking that he's kind of right! They kept that in the script & oh, the sweet subtlety of a self-burn.

I never understood that. It's not like Annie had to tell the girls that Shelby's family was having money trouble and that Shelby was starving. A child with braces brushing their teeth after eating is normal and super common, I saw it every day with my classmates in middle school. This show can be infuriating at times. A lot of the time actually.
