Nataly & Lauren ; I first saw Tom Waits sing that song in 1978 at the Park West in Chicago. One Year after that I saw Tom in Seattle (I dont remember where). Now, 33 years have passed by, I forgot all about that song, until I saw this. I love you Girls, Thanks so much for sharing your talent with the World, you both are truly gifted. Peace Out; Bobby
I love Tom Waits with a passion. This is one of my favorites of his. I hate covers of his songs and I'm tired of people attempting it. Just give it up, folks. That said, I LOVE your recording of this song--it's a truly excellent cover. Very well done, Lauren and Nataly.
My wife and kids keep wonderin why I listen to this...and other Nataly ballads... over and over again...it feels like she's touching my soul...and I'm not even Religious!!!
Words have lost their meaning in youtube, because it is so easy to say that everything is "super" or "the best thing ever" et cetera. But still I feel the urge to say that this is a masterpiece! It shows both your talent, and the genious behind Tom Waits' vapid soundscapes. When listening to the original, you don't hear the chords or the melody; it's more of an idea. And here is a beautiful and more approachable arrangement of the idea. Goosebumps all over :)
Everyone else is writing these so why not me lol. Its 5:28 am. Im sitting on my roof listening to this on repeat looking at the stars trying to distract myself from the onslaught of painful memories. Good memories but those days are gone. Those friends i had growing up are gone. I have no fuckin idea if im happy sad or drunk crying at the moment but its happening lol. I pretend like i hate them or it doesnt bug me that my entire friend group went up in flames all at the same time one day. But the days press on. The sun still rises and I can find some sort of beauty in that. A comforting sense of warmth greeting me every sunrise i have the blessing of catching. I can still see beautiful things even though life sucks dog shit atm. I think that means im heading in the right direction in spite of lost friends and set backs. Idk. But hey. Im alive lol.
keep it that way, alive, life and death are the same things, in this context, people will come and go in our lives as we acquire new point of view and as our felling grow, born or die, people who endorse those will also follow it.
I still haven't gotten tired of this. No matter how much I listen to it (it's on a bunch of my iPod playlists), I always feel that same tingling when it starts.
I can't get over how awesome that banjo sounds when bowed like that. Hauntingly beautiful is what I'd call it. Incredible reinterpretation of the song!
So much talent, and so much beauty......Nataly has done a lot of incredible work . Her voice is intoxicating.. I was just turned on to Lauren by her rendition of Ralph Stanley's "Oh' Death", and I became an instant fan of her work. It is a pleasure to see them performing together.
Beautiful lyrics. I don't know if I've ever heard the original but now I have to look it up. Beautifully done here, and I love the blue tint thing going on in the video.
I really agree, you should do a whole tribute CD of Tom Waits songs...you really have the soulful voice needed to bring his music to life.I have never heard anyone cover his music like you do. I'm sending seriously mad props your way... great work.
This is one of the best songs put on TH-cam. Its inspiring and these women give this Waits song justice. Originals are always great, but best cover song I've heard in a long time.
Man, one time I was driving to Wyoming from Oregon, and had to hitch a ride with an organ donor over a mountain pass. Road trips breed adventure. Glad you guys dig it.
I first listened to this cover years ago, loved it, but over time it faded into the ether. But I never really forgot, just remembered about it today, and boy this cover still holds up. I still got a bit choked up listening to it.
I love these two artists individually. Two amazing creators. But together, there is this kind of beautiful synergy. They become more than just their sum. I wish more of my friends were this terrible. ;)
i love you both so very much, your music together is heartwarming, like a lullaby. this song reminds me of my grandmother especially since Nataly is singing it and i thank you for this
Wow, very good. I grew up listening to Tom Waits, and I really enjoyed this. I also thoroughly enjoy watching your little road trip clips, so funny! You guys are a real hoot, and I love the way you dress Lauren! Haha, good job ladies, keep it coming!
Oh boy. I love Tom Waits and I love both of you. I am hesitant to say this--hold that, no I'm not! This is better than the original recording! Tom Waits is a genius, so what does that make you two? I guess some kind of new, better geniuses than the old geniuses.
that was heavy. i know that tom waits can make really heavily touching songs like that but to make your own version of it and still keep the raw feeling of it is a true gift. you girls really know how to make music
Everything about you guys is fantastic, but what I really love is the quirky instrumentation and most of all the great mixing, it's a pleasure to listen to anything you produce, Pomplamoose, Lauren's own stuff or MTF. Ye rock, and please come to Ireland sometime!

Still holds up. Genuinely great cover. A lot of your creative approaches to sounds also really echoes the way Waits actually records his songs.
My wife and kids keep wonderin why I listen to this...and other Nataly ballads... over and over again...it feels like she's touching my soul...and I'm not even Religious!!!
I believe this is best Tom Waits cover. Not just talking about this particular song .
Beautifully done - bravo to you both. No easy task taking on Tom Waits but this one just soars.
This has become one of my favourite songs ever.
