  • Is it Safe?? Strap into the dentists chair with Dustin Hoffman, Sir Laurence Olivier and Roy Scheider for one of the great thrillers of the 1970's, Marathon Man.
After the shocking murder of his older brother, a New York history student finds himself inexplicably hounded by shadowy government agents on the trail of a Nazi war criminal who is trying to retrieve smuggled diamonds.
    .
A great entry into the 70's paranoid thriller movie genre, featuring shady government agents, nazi war criminals, double crosses and dental torture!
    .
Steven at Reel Classic Films Reviews discusses the film, and how it has earned its place as one of cinemas great thriller movies.

The 70's were a truly great period for independent films largely because the old studio system had collapsed in the 60's and the new system wouldn't be established until the 80's. You can certainly see glimpses of what was to come with "Jaws," "Rocky" and "Star Wars" which brought us the eldritch horror of "the summer blockbuster" but certainly the first half of that decade was nothing short of magic.

A Bridge too far is also a great 1970s warmovie!

    Such a great 70s thriller
Apparently Olivier was so annoyed by Hoffman's method acting that he told him to "just act".

Yes, I think the line was 'Have you tried acting, dear boy?', in response to Hoffman's method use. :)

@@curiousworld7912 I heard Hoffman was running around to make himself out of breath for a scene, and Olivier said, 'Have you tried acting, dear boy?'

Sadism is all that movie had, otherwise it was a confusing mess.

Yes, a suspenseful thriller indeed. In the beginning after that traffic quarrel the misery started.

70s political thrillers. The perfect genre for the decade.

    Hi Steven,
I will be catching up on your recent videos buddy, "Marathon Man" is a very good thriller & totally agree one must have patience while watching, maybe not for the younger movie fan in my opinion, but the cast keeps one watching & its well written & directed.
Never been much of a fan of Hoffman but i recognise his talent, but he"s very good in this one, even though Laurence Olivier steals the show in this one, the dentist chair scene put the fear into everyone going to the dentist after watching this movie 😬
I was a little disappointed that Roy Scheider wasn"t in it as much as i wanted, a fine 70"s thriller the city locations were nicely shown in the movie also.
Excellent informative review as always 👍Keep talking movies buddy !

Thanks for checking out the video mate, very much appreciated! I've never been the biggest Hoffman fan either in all honesty, this being one of his better movies in my opinion. Maybe a film with Scheider vs the Nazi's would have been even better? Maybe... Thanks again Carlos, take care.

@@ReelClassicFilmReviews I would of gone for Scheider for the lead role 😎👍

Terrific movie, although I do agree with your criticisms. And I've dreaded going to the dentist, ever since I saw it. I go - I just hate doing it. I think John Schlesinger did for dentists, what Alfred Hitchcock did for showers. :)

I dread going to the dentist as well but that has nothing to do with physical pain. It's the cost that is truly horrifying.

Great movie! The dentist scene being the most memorable part. How good was Lawrence Olivier in it! Totally outshone Hoffman. Who, to me has always been an overrated actor.

Dès l'ouverture du film avec l'altercation des 2 automobilistes, on est pris dans une toile d'araignée jusqu'au dénouement avec la confrontation de 2 grands acteurs.

Just watched this for the first time, and OMG it's terrible, doesn't hold up AT ALL today - so cringe...
The car crash scene is just not remotely believable - an elderly driver would just pull over and call the cops, not engage in a chase!
The fact that a near 40yr old Hoffman is playing a graduate student is laughable
The dialogue is horrendous - e.g "I think she's Swiss" really? That isn't the first damn question you ask your European girlfriend?
    The sound effects are embarrassing
    The music is amateurish
The villain is incredibly stupid - browsing Jewish pawn shops to value his diamonds immediately before withdrawing them, not to mention his death scene.
The ending makes us believe Babe can just walk back to his regular life without a policeman in sight the whole movie
The only credit I can offer is that it MAY have seemed good for a movie in the 70s, but damn just makes me glad I didn't grow up in a decade of films like this...
