I'm writing this from Phong My commune in Ben Tre province, Viet Nam, in the Mekong Delta. We are here visiting my in-laws. Even now 50 years after the war it is astounding how much evidence there is left from the war. There are places you cannot leave the trail because there is unexploded ordnance. There are bomb craters virtually everywhere you walk, now filled in with water. There are still ruined houses, destroyed by bombs. Every little town you visit has a war memorial. The one here in Phong My has more than 240 names of the dead and those were just soldiers. Many more civilians were killed. My wife's family was typical, so many killed in the war it is almost impossible to keep track. Both of her uncles killed, her mother's father, all 3 of her aunt's husbands, all 4 of her children, her brother...
Talking abt 19 year olds who serve in wars: My dad served in WWII as an old man of 31 years. He said later: "The younger soldiers followed orders they should have disobeyed, and disobeyed orders that they should have followed." He never openly stated that due to his influence over younger men, lives were saved. But I think he did help. Like others with experience, he once refused orders to take three other soldiers up a hill to take down a flag that was being shot at. Most likely he & his men would have been killed. Although threatened continually with courtmartials, he made it through & was honorably discharged w/ the rank of sergeant in 1946.

Fantastic talk thank you so much to you all, especially to Oliver Stone! The takeaways are so important so I dared to summarize some of them: @6:25 - “I had to have my eyes awakened by experience” @26:08 - “…A full employment economy with a war, A kind of setting, It’s a bible, it’s religious, it’s more than reason, an indoctrination of the soul” @28:00 - “…he had to go on offbeat radio shows, because he said the truth on CNN one time to somebody and they no longer booked him… It seems to be some corporate control of television and the media that is pushing for war; it’s a very subtle thing, not a conspiracy but a drive towards profit” @33:36 - “…the press is One of the worst media in this country the mainstream media, thank God for the internet, there are people saying other things, we’ve got to listen to them, you’ve got to look for that stuff because you’re not gonna get if from the top 7 media companies, you’re just not, they don’t want to hear it, they don’t want controversy, just want sell you stuff ”
Well, we learned from the Church Commission in the 1970s we have CIA minders covering every mainstream outlet. Now we have something called the NED doing this officially overseas as a snooty NGO of sorts.
I served in Vietnam in 1972-1973, everything that Oliver Stone says about Vietnam is the real deal. Four years after Oliver served in Vietnam American young men were still fighting and dying in this war, we sure did not want to be the last soldiers to die in Vietnam, why did the people in Washington continue to prolong the war knowing we could not win it? Money and hubris.
& I now have & am reading her book. From the mention of her in this interview I am very glad to know that she is still alivie & I hope that she is well. From a retired UK citizen, who as a teenager, grew up with the Vietnam war on the media news each & every day.
I think if Oliver were to think carefully about the best war movie he knows other than his own it would be Kirk Douglas’s Paths of Glory. Which he did actually reference during this talk. It’s my personal favourite on many different levels. Made in 1957 in black and white.
It was Oliver Stone, bless him, who introduced me to Edward Bellamy, long repressed and forgotten. Read Bellamy to recapture revolutionary imagination. First, Looking Backward; then Equality. Both free on the net.
He speaks for this American. Everyone should read his biography to know what real work ethic is all about. Unfortunately since the Vietnam War America has become dumber so I don't expect brakes into the abyss anytime soon.
Vietnam is only slightly bigger than Italy. It was an odd comparison for Stone to make : "A country smaller than Europe" 8:10 Yes Oliver it is smaller than Europe. Much.
Wonderful filmmaker he has made revealing movies issue based, and he stuck to his scripts point of view ideologies to what he wants to show as filmmaker

Paths of Glory is also a great war film by an American director. There’s a saying Don’t throw good money after bad money. In other words, when you start losing at the casino, it’s time to leave. The ruling elite would do well to remember this.
The American-Vietnam War was about oil; the South China Sea was thought to be another Persian Gulf with enormous destabilizing geopolitical consequences for the oil industry.
31:00 ish he says we are not wise diplomats, more or less. Here is an excerpt from "South Asia Papers". by Stephen P. Cohen (not he Stephen F. Cohen who was his mentor). "I was astonished; the much-vaunted American government had a weaker capacity to recall past events than the Indians, who fanatically kept up their files, minuting every conversation (including my interview with the officials I was meeting). Things have improved with computer-based data systems, but Indians are much better prepared for discussions with American counterparts than one would expect. Indeed, there have been instances when American negotiators had to be prompted or corrected by Indian and Pakistani interlocutors regarding America’s own position on various issues."
The only thing I can say about my military experiences between 1968 and 1972 is that you cannot not send boys and girls into combat and expect them to ever really come home as boys and girls again.
to break that lock: ...Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place; [13] That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? ... And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which the LORD shall lay upon him, it shall be with tabrets and harps: and in battles of shaking will he fight with it. [33] For Tophet is ordained of old... Howl, ye shepherds, and cry; and wallow yourselves in the ashes, ye principal of the flock: for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are accomplished; and ye shall fall like a pleasant vessel. [35] And the shepherds shall have no way to flee, nor the principal of the flock to escape. [36] A voice of the cry of the shepherds, and an howling of the principal of the flock, shall be heard: for the LORD hath spoiled their pasture.

@26:08 - “…A full employment economy with a war, A kind of setting, It’s a bible, it’s religious, it’s more than reason, an indoctrination of the soul”
@28:00 - “…he had to go on offbeat radio shows, because he said the truth on CNN one time to somebody and they no longer booked him… It seems to be some corporate control of television and the media that is pushing for war; it’s a very subtle thing, not a conspiracy but a drive towards profit”
@33:36 - “…the press is One of the worst media in this country the mainstream media, thank God for the internet, there are people saying other things, we’ve got to listen to them, you’ve got to look for that stuff because you’re not gonna get if from the top 7 media companies, you’re just not, they don’t want to hear it, they don’t want controversy, just want sell you stuff ”
Well, we learned from the Church Commission in the 1970s we have CIA minders covering every mainstream outlet. Now we have something called the NED doing this officially overseas as a snooty NGO of sorts.
@@robertrichard6107 So true
I saw the fallacy of the Vietnam War in 1965. I was 15 and lived in an insular farming community, raised by a single mother.
This was special, revelatory, insightful. The questions were excellent, except on film making at the end. ;-) Thank you.
revelatory*
@ Thank you, corrected now.
A good man, always ready to speak his mind, that is truth. Great film-maker as well. My deepest respect to Mr Stone.
So much for the students being the ones asking the questions.
Ms Hayslip is a saga in her own right. A beautiful soul.
& I now have & am reading her book. From the mention of her in this interview I am very glad to know that she is still alivie & I hope that she is well. From a retired UK citizen, who as a teenager, grew up with the Vietnam war on the media news each & every day.
My Man, Oliver.
I think if Oliver were to think carefully about the best war movie he knows other than his own it would be Kirk Douglas’s Paths of Glory. Which he did actually reference during this talk. It’s my personal favourite on many different levels. Made in 1957 in black and white.
Same here. Love Paths...
What a great talk ❤ thank you so much
Great interview. Shocking how poorly the sound is tuned.
Absolutely Brilliant- Sir Oliver arise ❤
fantastic: Thank you so much!
ukraine on fire, great documentary. thanmk you Oliver Stone! you are a true American Hero!
As time goes by & I learn more Oliver Stone just makes more cents...

What a great guy! Thank you!
Thank you
It was Oliver Stone, bless him, who introduced me to Edward Bellamy, long repressed and forgotten. Read Bellamy to recapture revolutionary imagination. First, Looking Backward; then Equality. Both free on the net.
Thank you!
He speaks for this American. Everyone should read his biography to know what real work ethic is all about.
Unfortunately since the Vietnam War America has become dumber so I don't expect brakes into the abyss anytime soon.
The Russians and the other Slavs won World War II and the Germans had been fighting on two fronts.
THANK YOU & GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS OLIVER 💜✌️🖐️🤟☝️👍👍👍
Question about MLK and it's affect on the black soldiers was a great question
Vietnam is only slightly bigger than Italy. It was an odd comparison for Stone to make : "A country smaller than Europe" 8:10
Yes Oliver it is smaller than Europe. Much.
Wonderful filmmaker he has made revealing movies issue based, and he stuck to his scripts point of view ideologies to what he wants to show as filmmaker
1. His father in France.
2. His father in Wall Street.
3. Oliver Stone was in Vietnam.
4. Oliver Stone was arrested on smuggling charges.
5. Oliver Stone went to school with George Bush.
6. He made the JFK movie with a Mossad agent.
Thanks for your service, Oliver.
Naive is the one function fixed in Time no running away from it :) much respect Mr. Stone beside some great books, and movies i send my love and respect to your son ❤
Yes great examples of pure propaganda for future reference. I agree. 😊
The farmers are gone the family's are gone, honestly and integrity gone America gone by by 😢
Respect 🎉
Paths of Glory is also a great war film by an American director. There’s a saying Don’t throw good money after bad money. In other words, when you start losing at the casino, it’s time to leave. The ruling elite would do well to remember this.
The American-Vietnam War was about oil; the South China Sea was thought to be another Persian Gulf with enormous destabilizing geopolitical consequences for the oil industry.
Wow!!
Oliver Stone is an American treasure
Hats off to Oliver ❤.
Clever and pro peace ✌️
Whittaker Chambers was not joking, even if it should not have been exaggerated after Stalin's death. Solzhenitsyn's warnings too.
“Let people talk. You should hear the other side before you go to war”…that’s very close to the crux of the matter. That, and the MIC dollars.
Very good guy and like his movie JFK, guess it is hitting reality!
1961 A Military Industrial Complex.......( like the one I just built).
Monsieur Stone, Merci !!!
The only thing I can say about my military experiences between 1968 and 1972 is that you cannot not send boys and girls into combat and expect them to ever really come home as boys and girls again.
789 Well stated !
And you definitely can't make "ambush set-ups" the primary way to wage that combat if you do put em in!?
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH,,,,,,,
just before 7:20 Who is that "Lily"/"Leelee" ? they are talking about ?
Le Ly Hayslip 😊
@@ronanrogers4127 Thank you very much ! I never would have guessed that name which i had never heard before.
Oliver Stone just states the obvious historical reality ! Nothing controversial . Why so much hate to the truth ?
.. 💘! Oliver, SIR! 💌 jc (thou 'moderator' didn't GOT IT) ..
38:45 he was right, he didn’t need a microphone.
to break that lock: ...Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;
[13] That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
The only way to understand properly about events in Ukraine is to watch Oliver’s documentary “ Ukraine on Fire”.
Eisenhower knew something was amiss in U.S. society.
