Really nice to see history about these islands. Something that modern media and the education system ignore these days. We need to know more about Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England and the smaller isles that surround Britain and Ireland. 👏👏

Among pretty much all cultures, killing your host after they provide you with food and lodgings is one of the worst dishonorable acts you can do. Even among warrior peoples it is considered a serious transgression.

The English had recently deposed James II and VII as their King, to replace him by the Dutch Prince William of Orange (The Glorious Revolution). They assumed that James would automatically be deposed by the Scottish also. The Scottish nobility mostly knuckled under (many of them willingly for motives of religion). Contemporary documentation shows that William directly ordered the massacre in order to show what would happen to any Scots who would'nt toe the line. The old MacDonald chieftain had in fact broken his heart by swearing allegiance to William, for the sake of peace. And the reward he got was to have his hospitality perfidiously violated, because William's government wanted to draw blood. 40 dead is a small number in the context of the17th century wars, but the Glencoe episode stands out because it shows just how glorious the "Glorious Revolution" was for the highlanders.

This video uses some different numbers and "facts". Seventy dead is most commonly used. The clan my surname is a sept of - MacIver - was involved with the Campbell's. I hope none were among my ancestors. How one kills unarmed men after their hospitality is hard to imagine, but killing women and children especially by stripping them and forcing them to die of exposure is beyond any semblance of humanity. How does one as King order such murders?

What good is it to obey them only to lose one's soul? It is government we should not trust and obey when we know what they order us to do is wrong. From my understanding the Campbells would not have done this if they had not been under threat of death themselves. We only have one God.
