  • Emmitt Smith thanks his fullback Daryl Johnston -- Moose -- during his Hall of Fame Induction speech in Canton, Ohio, on August 7, 2010. Not a dry eye in the house.

I was there and I can tell you that NO Cowboy fan had a dry eye during that time. Moose broke bones and literally broke his neck for the Cowboys. Moose will be loved by Cowboy fans forever.

For those that never got to watch the 90's Cowboys, Daryl "The MOOSE" Johnston was the key to Emmitt's rushing record. He blocked and opened up gaps big enough to drive buses through and he literally sacrificed his body, neck, spine to make sure Emmitt had open lanes. It was a One-Two Combo that devastated defenses because they couldn't stop Daryl from smashing through like a *JUGGERNAUT* then seeing Emmitt finishing them off with a huge run. 00:12 Also, the chants that stadiums now yell with players nickname all started because of "Mooooooooose"! He was the original. Everyone has been copying a variation of that chant ever since.

    • @camaro25

dmreeoogdaq He grew up in Nebraska and went to college in Wyoming (away from the glitz & glam of big media centers) and was never a controversial figure. Maybe that's part of it. Plus his career was a bit curtailed by injury. Anyway, ask Aikman if there was a TE he would have rather relied on. [BTW, check out the high school athlete he was. Dude was all-state everything!]

I had the privilege of sharing the same backfield with a younger brother. I was a senior, and my brother was a sophomore. He earned the starting job at tailback, and i was his lead blocker. Never did i block as fiercely as i did that season. I can't really explain it, was just some kind of primal instinct to protect your younger kin that was activated.
So the line he said "you protected me like your little brother" really resonates with me. I would've done anything to protect my brother, and there was never any kind of jealousy because when he scored, it felt like we scored.

He, his mom Ann who still sells flowers in front of the house, his brother Derrick, such humble, small town boys. I am 30 and was not a football fan on any real level until after I played a little back in high school so I missed the cowboys when they were really, really good. I was looking up players from that era and Johnston had the look of a retired player so I looked him up and saw that he played 10 seasons but his numbers were pretty rough for a ball carrier. Now I understand. That is one bad ass dude. Respect to Moose.

There may have been runners with more moves, more speed etc. but none who have had the heart and desire that this man possessed. I miss watching E smith and moose Johnston on Sunday with John Madden and Pat Summerral in the broadcast booth. So many great games in those days.

emmit was very fortunate to have such a good team all around him... moose, that o-line and dont forget troy and irving. he was a great running back and it's nice to see he gives credit where it's due.

@mowen300 I agree! I dont like the Cowboys at all since I am a 49ers fan but that was a very moving speech that Emmit gave! Emmitt is a class act all the way and I really loved how he gave credit to Jerry Jones, Jimmie Johnson, all the offensive linemen who blocked for him, and especially Johnston, Aikman, and Irvin. I have to say I was moved and glad that he did that! Shows that the man has alot of class!

Full backs, especially before today's hurry-up offenses, were very important for blocking for the back, pickup blitzes, an occasional carry or swing out for the pass in the flat. In short, the greatest backs had solid FB's - Moose was one of the best ever!

I hate the cowboys and Emmitt but Mr. Smith's Hall of Fame speech praised those that helped him. The one noted mention mentioned was for the Moose. Nice Emmitt! You demonstrate a character that people should emulate. Congratulations. To look back in your career and thank those that helped you to be who you are now shows maturity and understanding on the long journey to get to Canton.

The Fullback is the Nose Tackle, the Defensive Tackle, the Linebacker, and the Safety, of all the offense.
