Don't forget that it's _your_ fanbase. You've talked very positively about Kum and Venom in your videos (especially Venom) and may have influenced people to pick them up. Big Yellow also featured Kum fairly prominently in one of their vids and there's probably a strong crossover audience between you two. Never discount Content Creator Influence, especially on a relatively smaller game like this one Edit: Kum and Venom are also two of the few characters stuck in Xrd purgatory/Strive waiting room for players who care about that
This is absolutely something I'd really want to track, less so with how influencers might be able to make people pick specific characters and more if they can ACTUALLY convince people to play the game. When rollback came through the game saw a huge spike, would like to know if people making videos could cause spikes or just reinforce the people who are already there to keep playing
Not even just influencing people to pick them up, picture yourself as a venom main and you see some guy glazing your main. You'd be like "Hell yeah this guy is beautiful and smart just like me" and hit that sub button
@@NotLeonMassey I had an incredibly tenuous relationship with FGs back when I first watched your Projectile manipulation video a couple years back, but it convinced me to pick up Xrd and by extension, Kum. I never really played the game that much(which proves your point in the video about Kum), but it was a pathway into Strive (I couldn't crack having to search for lobbies to only get boxed at that time), and by extension, a pathway into being far more invested in the FGC as a whole

i'm going to be honest this style of video is about 500 times more interesting to me than the hyperslick hyperedited longform things you've moved on to on your main channel
I’ve only played against one other human in xrd. They played Jack-O’ and I play Bedman. I’ve ran that data through extensive testing and found that the global xrd player base is 50% Bedman players and 50% Jack-O’ players :)
I want to play Johnny in Xrd, but I lack the time, commitment, and patience to really get him down. You'd think "well, just play as who you want," but Xrd is so damn gorgeous that if I play a character who's meant to look like everything is so inherently flawless and he's just fumbling around like an eight-year-old is mashing buttons, it feels oddly disrespectful. So instead I just play as Faust and hope to pull meteors.
In the actual overall fanbase I'd be extremely surprised to see him outside of top 3, he's super strong and easy to get into along with being the second most important character in the lore. This list has other tells for being inaccurate but that's one of more obvious ones
I find it funny that you think of Sin as a "Who Cares" character, when to me that is May. It's all personal opinions of course, but i find Sin's moveset, hunger meter and design to me much more interesting than May. She could be deleted from the game and i wouldn't really notice.
As someone who mains may and is pretty bad at gg I have some thoughts about her: I feel like May's inputs often conflict with each other in ways that make her feel really awkward. Trying to charge while holding negative edge is tricky, if you hold back while pressing the first button, you get FD instead. There is also an option to have the dolphin fire on a tap instead of a hold, but this can be triggered on accident and happened to me alot when first picking up the character, causing me to scramble on my own oki. Having two different input methods for hoop dolphin is clearly more thinking than I can handle. Hop on dolphin honestly made me consider dropping the character. It triggers based on proximity and if you're airborne, and triggered by accident so much when I was first playing her, since the dolphin will fire on its own after like 6 seconds. The most extreme example I can think of is that HOD can interrupt May's command grab, causing it to do literally 0 damage and leaving you fullscreen. This has happened to me at least twice. Idk if these things are actually hard to deal with, but at the beginning it felt like I constantly had to play around what her inputs dont allow for. Similar to how you might try to dash into fireball with Ky and get DP instead.
ill be honest xrd never clicked with me like strive or ac+r did but i still love and appreciate these quaint little videos on the game. was a good watch :)
Refreshing the lobby may create a glitch where you see certainly people as a light blue rank Sol because it failed to load in their data and that is what it defaults to. There are also people who exclusively play through discord and the chances of finding a Sol there are substantially lower. There's also an Elo sheet on the discord and if you really wanted you could've just asked there where I am sure people like StaleDevil would unsheathe this info like a grand royal scroll.
I would LOVE an annual statistical analysis of Xrd mains, even if it would almost certainly yield more or less the same results every year (deadgameloljk)
i'd like to bring something up that, i believe, pattheflip mentioned "everyone should learn sol because he has good tools for every common situation you'd find yourself in xrd" or something like that and in gameplay, it really shows by having good buttons in neutral, an anti air in 5k, another anti air in air throw which cranks the stun gauge like crazy, great reward off of frame traps and confirming counter hits, 5f hvv etc and he just does enough damage and is ignorant enough that you can just ape out on the sticks and still pick something up from said aping, and improve upon it to ape out even more but smarter. which means that sol is for everyone hence the unsurprising result of this poll
I'd be curious to see those stats for +R actually. The tools for that game are probably better to track this, especially since everyone plays in the same single big lobby.
It's funny you mention that lone Sol player trying to find matches in Ranked Xrd, because everyone is in player lobbies Because the _same thing_ happened in Strive. The ranked tower system leaves a lot to be desired, so everyone just plays in the park (casuals) lol The more things change, the more they stay the same I suppose (But really bro, Arcsys could do a lot of good by improving the netplay experience leading up to the actual match itself)
You do better! The Public Lobby is still active to this day. And I always find myself hard to get into Xrd because of not having a better system. But Blazeblue looks and works pretty much smooth but dead for me because specific region game most of them pings 0 to 1 and the lobby isn't my cup of tea.
As someone who has helped new players before, I could see why Leo wouldn't be very popular to play long term. Mainly being a charge character with a weird stance would probably push people away for a while after an initial romp. After that, I just have theories. I theories that Ky would just be a guy that a decent amount of people would start the game with until they get their barings and find something they enjoy playing more in terms of both main and probably secondary too. Maybe I could chalk up may to partially the same reason and partially your reasoning because iirc she's super popular in Strive compared to Xrd and +R (judging from my experiences on QM)
As an xrd may main, I think part of the issue is she isn't really all that flashy compared to the rest of the cast. Starting out she's really easy to play because her buttons especially in the air are insanely strong and she can get a lot of reward with some very simple routes, and playing her is actually really fun especially once you start learning dolphin cancels where the floodgates just open up and now you have access to crazy mix and really interesting optimal routes. But comparing her to characters like venom, haehyun, even sol and ky, her combos and oki just don't look as visually impressive, and without dolphin cancels and a solid understanding of her more niche corner routes her combo routing and oki is also very simple and plain. Most of her easy beginner combos are like gatlings into sweep into hoop set, or a very basic j.s j.h j.h j.d ensenga route, and without dolphin cancels your only mix that leads to any actual reward is OHK strike throw but most players know how to deal with that well. Plus while it's not necessarily the optimal way to play her she's often played as a bit of a brawler, scrambly character which other characters do better and look cooler while doing it.
I think more accurate numbers could be from a poll released to twitter/bluesky, These numbers are definitely because your viewers share your character love. (long time viewer so no condescending message here
5:24 oh shit that's me (: (ignore the extremely sloppy gameplay, iirc this was my first round of xrd in like ~2 months, you can even see me trying to link f.s into 5k and get the timing wrong because i played acr like right before this lol)
Sol is probably still on top because some days that's all I fight lol. But I do think you get more characters like Potemkin and Slayer in the top numbers. I do know a lot of great EU players have a pocket potemkin lol
Kum is my favourite character in Xrd, because her name is Kum For me she’s simple to pick up but has a high learning curve, perfect character to fuck around with friends
Considering moving back to Xrd after they murdered Axl in Strive. At least in Xrd Baiken still has Suzuran, Axl has combos that work, and Sin's eat move actually has a purpose lmao
I'll (try to) explain why Slayer is well liked His style and demeanor are just cool, he's pretty easy to pick up and play, dandy step is fun as well as the pilebunker, and, of course, he's fucking strong
I bring this up in the next main channel video but Ino in this game is actually pretty simple to pick up. She's got a lot of room to develop but she's nowhere near as hard to get started with as +R Ino
I genuinely couldn't find my character in Xrd. Love Kliff, love Goldlewis (not enough to keep up with Strive but still), can't say the same for anybody in Rev2 beside some very, very low level Kum mashing.
Unga, Sol is unga but has enough complexities to make you consider non unga however doesn't allow you to stray too far from the comfort of unga. He allows you to say, "I'm so fuckin smart." After you heavy volcanic viper in neutral and catch your opponent lacking and then proceed to rc and delete a good 40 to 60% of their health bar
I would love to play more xrd but unfortunately I have some sort of love/hate relationship with every guilty gear game There are some nice parts of them but something just holds me back from enjoying them to the fullest Game gud but not for me Videos like that though, i would watch a million of them Matter of fact, gonna go rewatch your other xrd videos lmao
the data can be more acurate if you ask more people like quite litterually lets say 10 times the ammount of before like you can ask on other media on profiles not related to your
5:12 I thought this was a video about xrd, not strive Also, I’d say some part of the total player base is also on PlayStation, though it’s not super popular online (at least in Europe)
Weird, I mained Baiken because I felt she had by a very high margin the easiest gameplan and combo execution of the cast. What exactly makes her "genuinely hard"? Tbf I didn't play at a particularly high level, but still, pretty much every other character felt like they had way harder combos. Baiken dust loops seem so easy in comparison. The only thing I generally struggle with in xrd are instant air dashes, and baiken benefits a lot from "tiger kneed" IAD Tatami, but I feel like she's perfectly fine even without it.
I'm guessing May was unpopular for her character design as much as anything else. The whole "cute little girl" archetype seems to be more popular in Asia [I WONDER WHY]- it would be interesting to see a poll for non-English speaking players and compare the two playerbases.
May would be an excellent character to main except for one fatal flaw: why must she scream "JoHnNnYyYyy..." every time she takes an L That's why I play the thinking man's gorilla, Jam Kuradoberi
As a bedhead I am unhappy seeing directly in the middle, I don't get to complain that he's got no players and I don't get to complain that he's so popualar either (not that it really matters or is your fault obviously)
As a Slayer main with a pocket Sol, yes I do hate logic and reason, and no I cannot hear your complaining because I'm too busy enjoying these keys jangling in front of my face
this completely tracks since i dont play gg much but play xrd baiken but is there a reason why baiken players appear to be not too into the game? i just started playin her cause i liked her design and then her moveset clicked but i dont really have the words to describe why she clicked more than other gg characters
May is never popular because there's too much disconnect for her character design. People who play power characters would rather play someone like Slayer, Potemkin, or Sol instead of a stubby little girl who jumps really high and spam disjoints. Those who do play high speed jumpers would rather play someone with faster buttons to match the speed with more pure mixup. Her being a charge character also doesn't help. Also people seethe at child characters for some reason. Lilly in SF6 almost checks all these boxes and she's one of the least popular characters there too. While you could argue about competitive balance for the lack of popularity, but Jamie is one of the most popular characters among the playerbase while being a consistent Bottom 2 of the game.
TBH barely touched Xrd, not sure exactly why. if I want to play an older Guilty Gear I typically default to +R. If I did put more time into Xrd I would probably start with Dizzy and possibly pick up Ramlethal. If for some reason it had to be someone else May was my first choice when I originally tried the game.
I used to play Ky in +R and all i can say is that Ky feels.. weird, in comparison. Made me stray away from him and play easier characters like Raven and funnily enough, Sin
I love your videos, but you are beyond delusionnal about Venom's difficulty. While hard to optimize, anyone can be effective with Venom with a couple of games

the data can be more acurate if you ask more people like quite litterually lets say 10 times the ammount of before like you can ask on other media on profiles not related to your
4:56 dude he's peak as hell
Venom is probably so high because you’d cant play him in strive. Same with Kum, except she’s not even in accent core
5:12 I thought this was a video about xrd, not strive
Also, I’d say some part of the total player base is also on PlayStation, though it’s not super popular online (at least in Europe)
The whole "cute little girl" archetype seems to be more popular in Asia [I WONDER WHY]- it would be interesting to see a poll for non-English speaking players and compare the two playerbases.
chipp and zato bros rise up
i've always wanted to play xrd, but i'm not the greatest at comboing and never have a clue where to start.
6:25 Bloomfs rise
good video :)
May would be an excellent character to main except for one fatal flaw:
why must she scream "JoHnNnYyYyy..." every time she takes an L
That's why I play the thinking man's gorilla, Jam Kuradoberi
As a leo main, that makes so much sense... Also fuck slayer man, he'll never work, hate that guy, always have always will
As a bedhead I am unhappy seeing directly in the middle, I don't get to complain that he's got no players and I don't get to complain that he's so popualar either (not that it really matters or is your fault obviously)
J- Jack-O!?!?
Poll Badguy
Sol Badguy
6:27 WHAT THE FUCK
If i voted.... Sin would be competing with slayer WHERE WAS THAT FKN FORM?!?!?!?
slop enjoyers rise up
hehe kum
I love your videos, but you are beyond delusionnal about Venom's difficulty. While hard to optimize, anyone can be effective with Venom with a couple of games
TH-camr talk about baiken without mentioning masturbation challenge: impossible
