    Some great ideas on your yak modifications. Only one thing I might want to stress is you would be a lot better off using a battery powered all around white light for your yak if you're out at night. The red and green lights on the bow and stern of your yak would confuse boaters into thinking you are a larger vessel and your bow and stern is actually your beam. That could result in some way to close encounters with power boaters. Just a safe boating suggestion from a retired Coastie.

    Nice mods. I particularly like your tool stringer you discuss at the end... the one with your clippers, clamp & extra caribeaner clips, etc. Thanks for taking the time to hilight your mods for us.

    Brett... My apologizes on the slow reply.
    I found that Walmart online has crates. They were about $20. I found on ebay they have a slew of them as well. I would order from either one. I looked on craigslist and didnt really get any hits in my area. As for this crate. It was included in the purchase of the kayak. I bought it off a guy on craigslist for $250.00. Not bad being its a $499.00 price tag at Bass Pro. Hope that helped. Thanks for watching!

    Great video. I like all of your mods. Nice idea with the retractable dog leash. I also like the tools on the retractable cords. I'm planning on a trip to lowes to make an anchor trolley tomorrow. Thanks for the video!

    Great ideas and a great video. I've got the FS12 and love it. I used battery lights similar to yours but to recharge my phone and power 12 volt stuff I got one of the small jumpstart boxes. It's not really waterproof so if I go upside down it may be toast but it charges from a regular extension cord and has a USB charge port as well as a cigarette lighter port plus a small work light and is relatively light. All of this for about $30. I may go ahead and install permanent 12 volt lights and just plug them in when needed.

    • @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj
      @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate your comment ThatGuyThatHikes. The FS12 did look like an awesome Kayak. It all came down to the number of Peso's I had in my pocket when I was looking. LOL! Being Married and with a kid.. well.. there isnt much in the fun account. LOL! I like the idea of the usb and lighter port that you did. I usually have everything charged up when I head out... But how cool would that be to have it on board.. I would like to have lights on a switch.. But again.. on the cheap.. its working for now and I try to get out of the water by dark any way. If I ever do put a battery in the boat.. its gonna be for a trolling motor.. I enjoy padding most days.. But some times you want to fish.. and not fight paddling. Thanks for the comments.. I enjoyed them!

  • @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj
    @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It does... Its not a whole lot of storage. I usually stuff my xxl life jacket in that little hole. It will hold a little more than that as it goes pretty deep to the back. I have contemplated putting a battery in there to run lights. A 12volt deep cycle battery probably wouldn't fit in there though.

    First I would to say that your video was done very well. I have owned the FS12 for several years and I would recommend the kayak. Price point is reasonable in comparison to Jackson or Hobie or Old Town. It is very stable in rough weather, however it is not light to transport or portage. The best piece of advice he gives is if you want to buy a kayak, be patient, and look at Craigslist. The seller usually throws in a PFD and paddle to boot. Kayaks have no moving parts so maybe it has scratches on the bottom, big deal. Gonna happen anyway, In response to several concerns from the comments here is my two cents of advice. (1) The chair is comfortable and all but it does pop out, particularly when draining it or transporting it on its side. (2) Do not trust the "dry" bag with your cell phone. The seal or the black cap cover that screws in is finicky. I put my truck keys in there though. (3) Standing up in it? If you are nuts I guess. It was touted as being able to stand in but . . . try getting into a kayak in the middle of a lake if you fall out! Last but not least you need a "piss cup". Especially if you drink beer like me. I put a plastic cup on a retractable key chain attached to the seat. Kayak fishing has to be the best hobby/activity I have. Catching a largemouth bass while sitting on the level of the water . . . can't wait for March 2015!

      Mark, thanks for the comments man! I have already had my kayak on the water this year a couple times. I just got done doing a new mod to it and adding a fish finder in a unique way. I will have to shoot s video to share. Yes your comment on dry bags. Absolutely love them! Rain, sloshing in the boat... They are still bone dry. I made one up a couple nights ago as a survival bag. Not that I would ever need it, but it might be nice to have in a pinch. I saw a new fs10 for $275 at bass pro outlet yesterday. Not sure if you have one of these.... And yeah... I would still recommend a fs10 being 6'7 280lb. Dad is 6'9 and he Had to get one as well! lol Drop a comment if you pull the trigger and get one. I would like to hear your thoughts after you take it for a spin! 😉

      Widow Maker I'd like to see how you fit a depth / fish finder. I used to own a Bass Pro 16 with an outboard. My depth finder was my go to. I want to spend the day on the lake casting some lures into the shallows but would like to know what's under me. So far, from your video I know to buy a dry bag and to install a trolley system. Last thing I want is to throw out an anchor only for the boat / kayak to turn the wrong way.

    Thanks Matt. Bass Pro outlet had a FS10 for sale today for $300.00. So I picked up for my dad. They had a Fs12 for $350.00. Planning on taking a trip to the lake tomorrow and taking them both out.. May take the camera, but watching two guys paddle around the lake sounds pretty boring. May have to build some ramps and see if we can jump stuff with them.. JK!

    I got the same kayak. I've mounted a 30 lb trolling motor and actually run a crabbing trotline. Works great. My 12v Optima blue top battery does fit behind the seat but with my 210 lbs, the 55 lb battery and trolling motor it makes the stern sit very low in the water. I ended up putting the battery between my feet and it works just fine. I'm hoping the much lighter lithium ion batteries will eventually drop in price. (Right now at about $500 for a 40 amphour Lith-Ion I'm too cheap to buy one) Langston Majette (active here on youtube) has a 40 amphour lithium that weighs under 10 lbs & gives him about 7 hours of use on his kayak. New Lithium Ion Battery!

      @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Herman! I'm jealous! I enjoy paddling on most days. But for sure there have been a couple where I would love to throw the trolling motor on high and zip across the lake. I know what your talking about in regards to sitting low in the back. I made a dog platform in one of my videos and think we had the back filled with water when we got done! lol!

    Very nice (albeit looooooooooooooooooooooong)! I have the same DryPac camera case; haven't used it in a while but probably will when we enter rainy season. I usually don't carry too much waterproofing gear (except for a rain jacket) since the likelihood of capsizing a pontoon is somewhat remote (ha). Very nice yak and well laid out. Thanks for the shout out; at some point I'll do a more detailed review of the floating stringer idea I stole from you. See you on the water! Your friend, Don.

    Hey Widow Maker...two questions about your trolley/anchor. 1) where did you get the black plastic cable guides that you're using to guide the upper trolley rope and attach the pulleys to? 2) Do you have a problem with water getting into the leash? Your setup looks exactly like mine, and my leash goes underwater when I drop anchor (5# weight like yours). It crapped out after about 5 outings on my yak. Jammed up and wouldn't retract. I was concerned about that before doing this setup, and well....that's exactly what happened. Thanks.

    • @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj
      @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sbecke1- Great questions! I picked up the trolley line guides at Academy Sports. The product is sold by yak attack! It's probably on eBay. They are expensive in my eyes but are simply amazing! Just open your wallet and close your eyes! Lol! As far as the dog leash! Yes mine has crapped out as we'll and would not retract after that many uses as well. Wondering if there is metal that is in there that is rusting and stopping the retract! I nabbed another one I had in the garage and have been using it! It works so darn we'll! I found if I just used a rope, my legs would be soaking wet every time I had to bring up the anchor. About 5 times in a day! Just bought a house and have been super busy working on it! Should start putting out new videos when we get out of the 100's! I find I like spring and fall fishing when it's not so freakin hot! LoL!

  • @bbushert
    @bbushert 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey widowmaker. Nice review on the kayak. I have been thinkin about picking one of these up and a D10 for the Ol lady. How do you find it in the. Water? Easy to keep at a steady pace and does it track well? I have looked at some Jackson's, wilderness etc but can't really justify all the extra dough since I have never even kayaked before. Can u take the fs10 in mild rapids?

    • @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj
      @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      bbushert - Thanks man! The Kayak tracks super nice. Dad has a canoe and it swaps ends in the gentlest breeze. The kayak does amazing at staying straight and coasting even in extreme winds. To answer you on the Rapids part.... Never tried it being we don't have rapids here. But I probably wouldn't try it if we did though, and depends on if you are doing the colorado river or you are hitting ripples... Mostly because there is nothing covering the open area where you sit. I took the kayak across Table Rock lake one day and a Yacht went by.. I thought for sure the wave was going to come in, it splashed the outer rim but didnt come in... Someone told me last week they were taking theirs to the ocean... Depending on the wave.. you may get a boat full of water. But on a large wave in a lake it did great. Hope this helps. Check out craigslist before you buy.. You would be surprised how much you will save. Good luck man.

    very nice video, one more question, can you stand in this kayak? im looking for a fishing kayak, the standing kayak is just so expensive, im planning to buy a normal kayak and put two outriggers to it. problem is if there is enough room to stand

    • @WoodenCreationz
      @WoodenCreationz 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah... Not a standing kayak. Outriggers might make it plausible... It's really hard to tip.... But to stand in it.... It's gonna give you a challenge. Should you do it.... Shoot me a video with what you come up with and your test. It's so darn comfortable sitting... You probably won't want to stand. I throw an Alabama rig in mine with no problem. Thanks for watching And good luck with your build!!!!

    any one know if bass pro will replace my cruddy seat with that one? I have the older model fs 10, I do believe their interchangeable.

  • @pringalsgaming6253
    @pringalsgaming6253 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    How is the seat? Looks comfortable, but does it support you alright? Does the bar across the back wear on you? Does it feel stable enough to stand in? Seen this boat at Bass Pro last night and have been giving a lot of thought on it. I currently have a Perception Swifty 9.5 kayak that I got from Dicks Sporting Goods years ago. Love it, suited my needs till now, but I like the extra room and options this boat offers.

    • @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj
      @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pringals.... The chair is more comfortable than my living room chair. I have seen the other model where it is foam... I have heard people that own them say they are not comfortable. Lets put it this way, I have fished from 7am to 8pm a few times now. And was never sore. If you find a chair like this, I advise you buy it. Your butt will thank me later. Its also nice, because I typically take it out when I make the drive to the lake. Its light weight and folds up pretty nice.

    Question?? I went to Basspro yesterday and sat in a Ascend fs10 kayak, And with the foot pegs all the way forward and my feet on them the sides of my knees were against the opening of the cockpit. Im 6'
    foot tall and weigh 200 lbs and was just curious of you height and fit in your Kayak,

    • @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj
      @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edgit69 - This was the biggest question I had when I bought it. At basspro they have them on the walls and you cant climb in one.. And I couldn't find anyone as tall as me to ask the same question. Im 6'7 and 270. The pegs are not bad at all as they extended pretty far. I have done about 15 trips in this boat. A couple times close to 8 hours. If you get tired of the pegs on the sides, stretch your feet out forwards.. There is tons of room. You can paddle just as well on the pegs as with your feet off the pegs. I typically paddle going back and forth on and off the pegs. Never had it uncomfortable for me. I really think this was built for a 6'0 person but it seems to do very well for a tall guy like me. The bigger concern is to get a kayak that has a seat like I have. It keeps you off the floor and you can literally sit in it for 8 hours. Its more comfortable that my furniture in my house. Hope that helps... (Watch craigslist.. I had to watch for 2 months for this one and when I found it, I got it for half the cost!!!) Good Luck!

    So when you want to use the camera do you just pull it out of the side holster and turn it on, then put it back into the holster?

    • @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj
      @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah.. I have got 2 cameras now that I usually take with me. One sits on the pole behind me on my scotty mount and I have been carrying the other camera in a waterproof bag in the side there. You have no idea how often a camera and cell phone wants to roll under your feet if you don't figure out a way to secure it. The pole is pretty darn long that films behind me and I am finding its hard to start the camera and I have found auto shut off after so long can be a pain after 30 minutes. So I am probably going to redesign the pole this spring in order for me to be able to lower it down and raise it back up. I saw where a guy used a telescoping paint roller on youtube.. That may be my next mod.... Getting ready to move into a new house.. So once I get settled in, I can get back to modding and making more videos.

    Kayak Fisherman - I have on occasion had the chair pop out of the designated slots.... I typically have to paddle back to shore.... get out and readjust the chair. I should probably make something to prevent this from occurring... As I have never wanted to use it like a chair on the bank.. After paddling all day.. I typically don't get excited to hop out and get back in a chair.. But maybe during a camping trip or something....

    • @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj
      @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kayak Fisherman Scotty Rod holders are pricey but darn it they work.. And if one broke I would buy another one in a heartbeat. My advice... Get the Scotty Rod holder where the plastic rotates around your Rod. I believe this is the older style. I have both and I enjoy this one primary because its faster... You can twist it and it locks and your done. The new style they have a stretchy strap you have to stretch and snap... I have a feeling it will break one day and it takes a bit longer to get it locked. Might check out ebay for this older model. If you can find a Scotty Rod holder that I mentioned, buy it and try it out. You may end up buying 2. :-) Good Luck! And let me know if you buy it and like it!

    • @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj
      @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great question and I don't know that I can answer it. I've never taken mine out on the ocean. I did take it out on the lake and got passed by 2 yachts. I had a little freak out moment thinking I was going to sink but the waves crash on top of it and nothing went inside the hull. this summer I did attempt to sink it. It is possible to make it go fully underwater. but there's just enough foam in it that it wants to rise back to the surface. Hopefully someone can answer your ocean question little better than what I have.

    • @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj
      @kjlsdgfklshjdklflklj  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question jtboll00. It does weigh about 70lbs.. Only because I have all the extra junk in it. Stock.. Bare bones, it says it weights 50lbs. I'm a big dude.. but I never try dead lifting this thing. Not because I cant.. Because its easier to scoot it to where you want it and then lift one end and push.. Pretty simple that way. And because there isn't any hot chicks needing to see the gun show.... :-)

    your anchor light needs to be white. The red and green lights go on the bow.

    5:20 I just tie a loop in 12ft of rope, loop it through the handle and I have a 6 ft handle to pull it around or tie it off.
    None of this was a "Review" you're just walking around the yak telling stories.
    You can't just put random lights on your kayak, you'll get fined!
    RED(left)/GREEN(right) in front and White(all around) up high in back.

    I know this video was made a while ago and you may have already realized this. If you haven't, you need to research USCG boat lighting. Red and green are ONLY suppose to me up front for navigation lights and on the correct side of the vessel. The light in the rear has to be white as an anchor light (not underway light). Great video otherwise!!!

      Guys, go watch "ThatGuyThatHikes" video he linked here if you enjoyed my video. He did am amazing job of covering the FS12 kayak and some of the features that it has that mine doesn't. I haven't see a sit-in FS12 before! Pretty darn cool! PVC pipe is pretty cool stuff. Glad to see you have the Scotty Rod holders. I cursed the price when I bought mine... But absolutely love them and would buy them again in a heart beat! Wow... What a wonderful shout out video. That was really nice. I really think you will enjoy fishing. There is something pretty amazing about catching a fish in a Kayak... And if your not catching fish... I have never had a bad day just playing around in my boat. :-) Tight lines to you buddy and thanks again for the enjoyable video. - WidowMaker
