Orwell wrote it, with the Soviet Union foremost in his mind, though he was informed about world politics, and certainly there's nothing wrong with the Russians that makes them innately any more totalitarian than any other group of people. McCarthyism in the USA followed soon after and that was equally terrifying in it's war against truth. He wrote it about the day he lived in, and recent history, with predictions where it might all end up going if it followed it's natural course.
He set it in the country he knew, so he could get the little domestic details right, an Englishman writing about Russia wouldn't have been able to write an everyman as convincing, or as relatable to an English-speaking audience. If it was set in Russia it's Anglophone readers would have seen it as a criticism of Russians, rather than all humanity, and our modern societies, they wouldn't have related to it as a warning meant for them.
For what it's worth, there are rumours that the Soviet political elite had a few translated copies produced, and kept for themselves (it was of course banned in the USSR). The rumours continue that Soviet leadership actually picked up a few tips from there, and actually did use it as a source of new ideas.

Around 1950, the USA Communist Party started a campaign against "white chauvinism" within the Party. People were thrown out for trivial offenses, like serving watermelon for dessert when black people happened to be invited. (Which, BTW, actually did happen to Detroit firefighter Robert Pattinson in October 2017. He was fired for behavior deemed offensive and racially insensitive after bringing a watermelon to work on his first day on the job.)
The left is now applying that standard only to everyone on their right.

The only form of status is how high off the stinking pavement your poorly made, concrete commie block apartment is. The people are forced to worship Corporations that now govern the West. "In the embers of Western daylight, humanity festers-swarming like locusts across the desolate planes of concrete jungles. These city-cubes, monolithic and suffocating, cradle over fifty billion souls in their cold, unyielding grasp. Each soul, a whisper in the cacophony of the gibbering masses, yearns for a breath-a breath now tethered to the cold machinery of commerce, metered out in monthly dues to the godlike corporations that reign supreme.
The earth, once teeming with the wild and the free, now lies barren, a silent testament to the voracity of human greed. Wildlife, the vibrant tapestry that clothed the world in wonder, exists no more, erased from the present as thoroughly as from the memory of man. The air, thick with the stench of despair, carries the weight of invisible chains-chains that bind people to the ground, to their miserly perches in the sky.
These perches, sky-high yet grounded in the mire of human folly, stand as the last bastions of status in a world where worth is measured not by the soul's light but by the shadow it casts upon the fetid pavement. The humble commie blocks, crumbling monuments to a bygone era of misguided equality, jostle for space amidst the steel spires of corporate deities.
The pantheon of these new gods, corporations of insurmountable power, demands worship in the silence of subjugation. History, once a tapestry of truth and valor, now weaves tales of deceit-tales where the great minds of the past, Newton, Maxwell, and countless others, find themselves reborn under the banner of the CCP. Their legacies hijacked, repurposed to serve the narrative of dominion, where the West kneels before the East in a mock parody of reverence.
And thus, the world turns, a carousel of stagnation, spinning endlessly towards a dusk that promises no dawn. The sun, indifferent to the plight of those below, marches towards its eventual extinction, a silent observer to the unchanging, unyielding reality of this dystopian doomsday. In this future, where the essence of humanity is bought and sold in the marketplace of souls, the only certainty is the persistence of the human spirit-a spirit that, even in the darkest of times, yearns for a glimmer of light in the unending night." - Andrea Zanzotto

We were writing software to control the lives of pigs for farmers in 1982/ 83; it controlled the animal's life from cradle to grave and was revolutionary and highly successful at that time. My director asked if the software could be used for humans as well (he meant human resource management initially) to which I had to reply yes. Quit the business a year later, never looked back, but reading "1984" in 1983 and seeing what we could in those days already do with a handful of chips and some rudimentary desktop computers sure made me aware that "1984" was a manual and a soon to be reality. It took a few decades longer than I had expected, but the "flat-screens with cameras and microphones" is so in your face that I can't imagine anyone not being able to see the writing on the wall.

Technically, he didn't. Agenda 21 / The NWO has been in the works for nearly 170yrs. You just didn't know the indoctrination was happening. History was destroyed through distortion and fabrication from the 1850s to current day, and this is why there are so many idiots among us intellects. This is why people still believe Columbus discovered America when the country is literally named after Amerigo Vespucci, whom discovered it 4-10yrs before the supposed date of Columbus's discovery. Columbia was named after Columbus because...wait for it... that is the territory he discovered. Just because Columbia is an American territory doesn't mean he discovered America. In history books I grew up reading, it painted Andrew Jackson (founder of the DemoNcrat Party) as a war hero when, in reality, he was responsible for the near annihilation of the Arawak Tribe. Then there is the lies of "10s of thousands" of slaves packed onto one boat to transport them to America. Fact is... there were no boats being built at that time that could hold such a load. Not to mention the slaves that were transported here were those sold by Mansa Musa, but that's another topic within itself. Also, there were already "darker complected" people inhabiting the land we now know as America. Not many people know Abraham Lincoln was Native American, but they celebrate Obama as if he is unique. The list goes on... but you get the point. If anything, Orwell was slightly on par with timing in his writings/predictions, because they were happening under the noses of THE PEOPLE and behind THE VEIL of deceptive manipulation and propaganda targeted at accomplishing the NWO. The seeds were set, watered and nurtured, until they were able to make seedlings, and now they are passing their seed along to further the cycle of indoctrination. Unless the cycle is broken, somehow, someway, WE will continue the pattern until morons become the majority and DNC / RINO Turncoat politicians seize their opportunity to completely control us due to their own misdoings nearly two centuries in the making.
SIDE-NOTE : Check out the book 'The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America" by Charlotte Thomson Iserbyt. That's a great place to start connecting some dots. That's how my journey began over 20yrs ago as a teenage hacker with an obsession with knowledge and truth.

The Nazis of WWII and the Soviets who took over Ukraine at the turn of the century and onward, just to name two, did exactly what the fictional government of 1984 did (which was written in '48, just a handful of years right after WWII--literally Orwell's present). The Nazis and Soviets, and later the communist Chinese with the government's attempt at erasing one of the most important historical moments that is the Tienanmen square massacre, rewrote the present and the past to control the future. Today in America, the 1619 project and subtle but dangerous demoralization on college campuses are doing precisely what the Nazis, Soviets and communist Chinese did in the last century. People/society have always been predictable and yet every generation believes that the things they do have never been done before. This is the great lie that causes the terrible suffering we see repeated throughout history. And the scariest thing about repeating history: no one thinks they are repeating it. They are too caught up in their superficial agendas, or too caught up following the herd, that they have not the slightest clue that their actions make up the calm before the storm, the calm before the suffering. There are no predictions, and there never have been. Just sheep and the sacred few who actually have a soul and a heart to love others.

Just because "Orange man say mean things on interwebs" Does not equivalate him to people who literally committed mass genocide for no other reason than their race.
Regardless of your opinion on Trump, or the Conservative movement as a whole, comparing people to Hitler should be "saved" for when it is actually warranted, when another person actually reaches that level of evil. The story about the boy who cried wolf comes to mind.

Even the RUSSIAN media were laughing about the way a pregnant woman was arrested, in front of her family, for nothing more than a Facebook post suggesting a (peaceful) protest about lockdowns would be a good idea. But that had nothing on a young woman being STRANGLED by police because she wasn't wearing a mask. I've remained pretty impartial to "opinions", but the draconian behaviour of 'authorities' does nothing to dispel conspiracy theories about 'the pandemic', and everything to support them :( It'll be a long time before Police are ever trusted by the community again.
