  • Canon Vixia HF R800 Review with samples show the video quality of this camcorder. I show video comparisons between the Canon Vixia and the Canon Rebel EOS T7i, and the Canon sx530 hs. I also show the zoom range and some other functions of this very easy to use camcorder.
Canon VIXIA HF R800 Camcorder (Black)
    amzn.to/2K7zzDO
    57x Advanced Zoom
You won't miss any of the action when shooting video with the VIXIA HF R800 camcorder and its impressive 57x Advanced Zoom range. Long-range shooting allows you to create videos with dynamic variety, and is less likely to disrupt the action you're shooting. It's ideal for formal ceremonies, animals in the wild, candid family videos and more. Available in manual mode, Advanced Zoom takes the camcorder's telephoto power from 32.5mm all the way to 1853mm (35mm equivalent) for amazing flexibility in shooting. For more convenient shooting and better creative control over your videos, the camcorder offers continually variable Zoom Speed settings with 15 levels available.
    SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization
Canon's sophisticated SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer helps correct camera shake quickly, so even handheld video taken at long focal lengths can be sharp and steady. Providing continuous adjustment throughout the entire zoom range to correct a broad range of motion, the Dynamic Image Stabilization system on the VIXIA HF R800 camcorder stabilizes rotational camera shake. Controlling rotational camera shake - horizontal, vertical and roll axis - helps ensure smooth, virtually distortion-free video, even when you're walking while shooting.
The VIXIA HF R800 camcorder is equipped with a 3.28 Megapixel Full HD CMOS Image Sensor to capture your memories in true 1920 x 1080 resolution. Canon's advanced, high-resolution HD CMOS Image Sensor features extra sensitivity that delivers beautifully lifelike Full HD video with natural color, even in low light. On-chip noise reduction brings bright clarity to every frame. Video is rich, clear and amazingly detailed anywhere you view it, even when played back on a large HDTV.
The VIXIA HF R800 camcorder incorporates the powerful DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor for outstanding imaging performance. The DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor captures more light, for brighter, virtually noise-free images even in dark scenes. It also speeds up operation and enables steady image stabilization for clear images even when shooting handheld.
The VIXIA HF R800 camcorder features a 3.0-inch capacitive touch panel LCD screen that's bright and clearly visible, even outdoors in the sun, with rich, natural color reproduction. Its streamlined user interface makes choosing focal points, tracking moving subjects, and shooting and watching your videos easy and fun. Clear explanations pop up when selecting shooting modes and recording formats, so even new videographers can feel confident as they create impressive videos.
The VIXIA HF R800 camcorder delivers flexible Slow and Fast Motion capabilities for a variety of customizable recording options. You can record slow-motion images at speed settings down to 0.5x, ideal for checking out your golf swing or creating movie-like slow-mo effects. Fast motion has a top speed of 1200x, recording an incredible 20 hours of action in a single one-minute scene. You can even choose new speed settings of 300x and 600x for added flexibility.

We just started a TH-cam channel and I found this little guy at BestBuy for $249, snatched up the last one because it had good reviews. It’s charging now. For others considering the canon vixia hf r800 the hf r400 is the same and can be found used for around $80 you will have to buy some batteries and a charger but you can get those for around $25 in a bundle with 2 batteries that have more capacity than stock batteries. The hfr400 doesnt have lens threads but you could just glue them on. The stock lens is very narrow and for most filming the wide angle will be needed. Unless you put the camera about 20 feet away from what you want to film haha. Important things to note are the video and audio quality are superb for the price when properly configured. It can support mics with phantom power aka they are battery powered. Also supports headphones and hdmi out.The hfr800 does not have AVCHD which is a higher quality recording format. I highly recommend trying to find a used vixia 400 series and up. Other models like the canon vixia 80 and i think just 8 or similar have internal memory and wifi or just internal memory. The hundred series aka hfr800 etc do not have wifi or internal memory. All of the cameras 400 and up should have image stabilization and manual modes. In manual mode you can adjust exposure, mic gain and focus. There may be other settings I forgot. Be careful when buying aftermarket batteries, some batteries do not come pre coded so they will not show how much charge there is. Also be aware of SD card scammers. I hope this helps someone. God bless

I noticed 3 things about the cameras:
Vixia- Great sounds, but not so great with 4K (in motion),
T7i- Horrible lag but sharper still image (I can’t believe this was more expensive honestly that lag was horrible),
and the last one had horrible sound, but it was great while in motion which was something the other 2 cameras were lacking. Thank you for the honest reviews

You are right about needing a powered mic. I do own a AA battery powered shotgun mic but I prefer to keep that as an overhead mic in my studio. My simple solution was to plug my Boya MM1 mic into my Tascam DR-22WL portable recorder as a preamp then run the audio out back into the Vixia. I keep the Tascam on auto and turn down the mic input level on the Canon. This way I get a drastic improvement in audio quality by minimizing the input gain on the Vixia.

I want to be able to man-on-the-street interviews. And, primarily for a professional look, I'd like to be use a custom-designed handheld mic with my video camera. That is, I'd like to put a logo around my handheld mic (my TH-cam channel logo, which I haven't designed yet.) I feel like that would make my man-on-the-street videos far more compelling. A handheld mic with a logo really provides a sense of professionalism, production quality, and branding that makes people want to subscribe to your channel because it signals that you're not just messing around, you're actually working towards building something.

To switch between mp4 and avchd, turn on the camera, select the house shaped icon in the upper left corner of the screen, select recording setup, select movie format, select arched. That is how to get avchd.
But avchd is for viewing mainly on an hd TV and so the file structure is a bit different. MP4 is able to be used in more editing software than avchd. So I believe you should always use mp4.

Just bought one. Will return or maybe exchange it. I can hear mechanical clicking unless manual focus is on (not useful to me) and it makes noise when zooming. I can hear that recording and during playback especially with Sony studio monitor headphones. I've heard a few reviews having this problem. Turning settings off doesn't help. Can you hear 'mechanical noise' on yours? My R400 died on me after 5 years of good use (LCD and camera connection is faulty I think). I never had these issues. I did with cheap Sony camcorders I tried and returned.

@@daktarioskarvannederhosen2568 I agree. The Sony's back then did that too especially indoors such as if you were shooting an informative video for a board game for instance. This 800 was worse. You could hear that and the zoom lever all the time. I returned it and found a good deal on a barely used R400 on eBay. The only huge thing I don't like about it is the cluttered GUI can't be turned off which is why I tried the 800. I still use the 400 with a monopod.

Thanks! Unfortunately I have no solution to the low light performance issues. It is absolutely a problem for this camcorder. But an expected problem for the price, to put it in perspective, a good wide angle low light lens for a DSLR runs between $650 to $2200. However in good to great lighting this camcorder does a great job for the price.

Wow, that was a quick response. I guess I should have said indoor lighting. On my other entry level camcorders I found that turning down the shutter speed helped quite a bit. The camcorders at this price range do not have a hot/cold shoe for aux. lighting. There are inexpensive attachments to circumvent the issue if it becomes a problem. Anyway, thanks again.

I just purchased a Canon Vixia hf r800. We will be using this camera to display a live artists work on a screen. When we have the camera plugged into a TV, the icons show up. How do I shut the icons off so they don't display on the TV?
If this isn't possible, what is a better camera to use?

Thanks for the review. Question, I’m looking to use this camera indoors to video our church services (due to the price point and our budget.)
The sound booth is approximately 50-75 feet away from the stage. Based on your experience with this camera, do you believe the video quality will be sufficient. I’m looking for something with a price point in our budget that will also be decent quality on the eyes when viewing.
I plan to bring the sound from our board into the mic input.
