  • A quick look at the 58 counties of California. I look at where they are on a map, the population of each one, and the largest cities in each.

    Hey everyone. I know this video is a bit dry, but I wanted to let you know what I'm working on for the next video. It'll be on how there has been discussion about building a new city from scratch in Solano County, between Vallejo and Vacaville. There are also other similar ideas being discussed, and the next video will be discussing these plans and if they could work or if they're pipe dreams.

      It would've been a lot easier to engage with if you put up pictures of the places you were talking about as you talked about them! I love maps but pictures make things much more real.

      Why don't you do one video for each of the 58 counties, and talk about the history, geography, demographics, specific to that county. Some of the counties probably have some pretty interesting stories that most people have never heard about. 😎👍

      @derekhiemforth There are also the rather-unknown places of Cordelia and Green Valley. If you look west of the I-680/Gold Hill Road interchange on the map then you'll see what I mean with Cordelia.

    As someone whose only remaining desire in life is to someday live in California, preferably spending time in more than one location if circumstances permit, I love that you've created this channel. I've already been a longtime subscriber to your main channel, and I'm very glad you created one just for California, as I've spent the last several years trying to learn as much as I can about the state geographically, economically, historically, etc.
    The more people crap on the state and seem to wish it harm, the more I feel an abiding love that can't be diminished by anything people say.

      I recommend lake county, where I live. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Covered in forest, great fishing on the lake, pretty decent weather. And not too packed with people

    Thanks, Kyle. All the cities were familiar, but I learned a lot of the county names. It is interesting to see the size differential between counties. You kind of downplayed Imperial county, which contains a lot of agriculture (not just desert). Biggest surprise for me was learning that Mt Whitney was in Tulare county!! Looking forward to future videos.

    Stoked for this channel! You’ve filled in so many gaps to my mental map of the country, and I’m excited to get the same treatment with such a big state. For future videos, could you switch back and forth between a few different map views (maybe elevation or large cities) as you go through the list? It helps me connect the dots a bit better.

    My cousin was born in 1940 in San Diego worked all his life in La Jolla and when he retired he moved to Trinity County right off the Trinity River. Takes about an hour to get to anywhere including a nice restaurant. My brother and I enjoy visiting his "quiet desolation" In his cute French Chateau off the river.

    That was really interesting! It's a shame the map didn't have any topographical or terrain information, but you did an excellent job of describing it. The differences between Redding, up in Shasta County, and the desert towns of Imperial and Bernardino counties are . . . stark.
    Cheers to the new channel!

    Hey Kyle, I'm excited for this new channel as a Californian. But I do have to note that for Glenn county, Orland is the largest city just by 2,000. And if the city underneath the county is supposed to be the largest city in that county then for Butte County, Chico is much more populated than Oroville but it is our college town up here in NorCal. I know you mean no harm but I felt I should let you know. =)

    I grew up between Sonoma, Kern and Mendocino Counties and constantly miss my native Santa Rosa-Healdsburg roots. I live in Draino, The Biggest Little Cesspool In The World and have been off and on since 1993. I'm super glad you started this new channel. Maybe focusing on financial and class disparities between counties - like, the difference between Marin and Humboldt or LA and San Bernardino counties, would be one topic to go over. I'm even contemplating a Patreon sub to you but it'll be a little while longer since I suffer from the Humboldt County end of finance, not Marin.😂

    Kyle, did you see the story recently that there is a huge lithium deposit in the Imperial Valley? I've seen that the estimated value of the mining could be $7.2B per year. Once you can do a fair treatment of the story, it might be interesting because, if true, it would have implications not only for Imperial Valley and California but the battery/EV industries and other industries dependent on lithium.

    • @CaliforniaView_Kyle
      @CaliforniaView_Kyle  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did see some articles on that deposit. There's been talk about that site for years, but it was a lot of speculation. It will likely change the economics of EVs and perhaps make them more affordable if the "fuel" for them comes from the US. The deposits are located in a part of the state that could use an economic boost, especially since Imperial County is so dependent on agriculture. With the water situation being bleak in the desert, it'd be nice to have something else in the economy working for the county and region.

    I always wondered why the countries have a nice even divide in the southern third (Monterey and SLO over to Inyo and San Bernardino). Was this divide a future plan to be CA's Mason Dixon line to separate where slavery would be legal?

    • @timothyfox3995
      @timothyfox3995 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am not a historian but the timing makes it unlikely that was the intention. The northern boundary of modern-day Kern with modern-day Kings and Tulare was first established as the sixth standard south of Mount Diablo base in the United States Public Land Survey System in 1866; the boundary between modern-day Inyo and San Bernardino was adjusted to match in 1872; the boundary between Monterey and San Luis Obispo was moved south to match it in 1877. The timeline is more consistent with a desire to simplify mapping my making reference to well-established survey monuments rather than natural geological features, at least on latitude lines. The Sierra summits and ridgelines would have been sensible for the divisions between East and West.

    • @timothyfox3995
      @timothyfox3995 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Correction: the adjustment between Monterey and SLO was 1872, not 1877. A banner year for the sixth standard south of the Mount Diablo base, I guess.
