    Great review (and editing). Very interested in this product solely due to this review.

    Great review Dave.
    Wouldn’t mind one of those myself 👍

    Great! Currently, I use one from Synology (12 bay). But it‘s quite old and yes, not the quickest. I‘m definitely interested in the upcoming videos.

    There are some advantages to cloud storage, I use Google Drive. I belong to a group and we use GD for creating shareable documents, storing and sharing videos etc. I could do all this on a NAS, but I would have to learn about security, I would need a faster fibre connection to handle the loads and documents wouldn't be as cross-platform compatible as Google Docs.

    If you are not backed up in two different locations then you really aren't backed up. So, both local and cloud storage for me.

    I remember playing with NAS in early 2000s and that was a mess :-) Two questions I have:
    - how loud it is? not everyone has the luxury to store it away, so how the drives and fans get in a normal room environment
    - can it be used for Time Machine backups?

    • @ConstantGeekery
      @ConstantGeekery  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Things have gotten much better. Drives are as loud as you’d expect 3.5” spinning drives to be. There is one main fan and it’s not overly loud. It only comes on briefly when it needs to. I thought the overall noise levels compared very favourably with other brands.
      I didn’t see Time Machine support yet, but I would expect that to come in a software update. It’s fairly standard for NAS to support it.

    I have been using WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra for years, one of the simplest NAS solutions, and although it does not have as many options as others, for me it is enough
    Thanks, good video

    Great video! This seems really well made and thought out. Especially the option to add RAM and NVME storage. This could very well replace my Time Capsules. I really enjoy them and I purchased them second-hand for a steal! (Bonus for me.) However. If or when they die, I think I will look to UGREEN as a replacement solution.

    NAS vs. Cloud? Well, I have no choice, legal issues: NAS. I‘m happy to be forced to use the NAS. Yes, I had to get in touch with it, but finally it was the better option.

    Working a bit through the channel backlog… thanks for showing this product, it looks quite nice. I’ve neglected my QNAP NAS the last few years because of… reasons, as they say. Otoh also not happy with the dependency on US cloud providers, not the least the very much overpriced Apple iCloud storage. I’ve got a local well established Dutch storage provider for syncing my files over multiple devices that removes some of the drawbacks, but I’m stuck with iCloud because of the utter convenience of their photo storage and increasingly useful recognition feature. The continuous threat of cloud providers (looking at you, Apple) for scanning your data for possibly nefarious content (and creating an inevitable false positive mess) is nagging me for a while now.
    May have to rethink my storage ‘strategy’ (definitely an overstatement) because of this box. 10Gb and 2.5Gb LAN is definitely a great feature, especially since FTTH has finally arrived to my little suburb with 1Gb speeds (a bit shocked what you have to put up with!) Love the two extra SSD slots apart from the 4 full size drive bays as well. Assuming those can be configured as a smart cache???

      Well, the kickstarter’s certainly ‘available in select countries’… only USA and Germany. Makes providing the link a bit… odd?

    • @ConstantGeekery
      @ConstantGeekery  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I don’t know why they are limiting it to USA and Germany, but it will get a wider release once the Kickstarter is done, and I’m sure there will be deals to be had. Gives the software a bit longer to mature also.
      The SSDs can be configured as storage or cache, depending on your requirements.

    My only concern is if your data is really safe in a NAS with software made in China?

    I think the limitation with devices like these will always be the software and how much Apple will allow to be deeply integrated to replace Photos on the iPhone. I wish EU mandates Apple to open up and give the same level of access as Photos and then we can have a true replacement for iCloud.

    Even with thunderbolt external storage still sucks in comparison to onboard storage. What’s sad is Apple puts the customer in the position to require one or multiple storage enclosures as well as a dock in most cases. For such a premium product it’s a joke that the base storage/memory amount is the same or less than the cheapest 2-300 dollar Walmart special. Their shamelessly obvious price gouge per incremental upgrade isn’t an accident. Their goal isn’t to sell any upgrades. Sure they profit nicely if a small percentage will upgrade let alone max out. The consumer cost to match their base offering can be had a as low as 35-45 dollars, how much do you think a bulk customer like Apple paid? And before someone goes on repeating Timmy’s talking points, yes I know unified ram is fast but it’s not magic especially when the small amount available is shared. While owning Apple silicon devices I’d gladly trade for 3-4x the amount of slower ram. I’d argue as these aren’t gaming machines the bandwidth advantage is unseen or benefiting most uses.
