This is one of the most complete and useful videos I've ever seen on TH-cam.
Thank you so much for watching!
If you're going to recommend WD Red drives you need to also warm that you need the pro or plus drives and not the terrible SMR drives.
Excatly. WD sercetly changed that. I have had a few SMR failures and I was able to rebuild my NAS on two occassions.
SMR drives might have a huge cache but cache is needed to write chuncks of data blocks. Every time the HDD writes something, Datablocks are re-written. This slows down the entire NAS. CMR drives are much faster and are safer for your data.
I was not aware of this. Thank you for the insight.
I am one of those, who really do appreciate the simplicity, which you mentioned. Very helpful...thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
This device is going to be my first foray into NAS systems and your video was super clear and simple to digest, great breakdown of connections and setup etc!
Great to hear!
Nicely done video that will serve me well when I receive the DXP6800 Pro. I especially appreciate how you tied in an easy way to achieve 10gb transfer speeds using a 10gb capable switch. Thank you!
Thank you!
Thank you for this!!!!
Any time!
amazing video, thanks for breaking this down so simply for us.
My pleasure!
Yes. Please do a video on how to use LRC catalog and a NAS.
Noted!
Does anyone know what the dimensions (LxWxH) are for the 4 slot one? Can’t tell from looking at it if it will fit under my television.
Amazing video.
Glad you think so!
Thanks for the video!! It would be nice to know how to backup an iPhone to the UGreenNAS (iOS and all data) and not have to use iCloud.
That's a great idea! I'll add it to the list.
how do you connect it for remote downloads and shares? Just connect it to your router? does it just require internet? or do you have to be on LAN
Would love to see a follow up video which includes how to use LR Classic with the NAS. Is it true that you can’t have a LR Classic Library on ANY NAS? Thanks for your videos. Always very informative and easy to follow.
That is an excellent idea and something that I think would be useful for many people. Yes, I will add that to the future video list.
Hi, is this NAS capable to stream 4k movies from Plex I’m trying to get a NAS for my movies.
You did a great job explaining the connection process.
Thanks!!
It definitely has enough performance, I'm just not sure if there is a Plex application available for it yet.
Your explanation of how to connect was excellent, however I have a (probably dumb) question. Since the DXP 4800 plus has both 10gb and 2.5 gb ports, could I bypass the switch and get a Thunderbolt to ethernet adapter, as you mentioned, and simply plug my iMac directly into the NAS, bypassing the switch. Then, connect the 2.5gb port on the NAS into my router to provide access via wireless or internet (say with my laptop). This would only be a 1gb connection since that's what my router ethernet ports are. I only have my iMac desktop and a lap top sorely no need for all those additional ports in a switch. Would this work or would I absolutely have to go through a switch for 10gb?
Yes, it actually will work! Check out our advanced setup guide to learn how to configure that.
Thank you for explaining things so thoroughly!! I had a question about the connectivity how come you cant skip the 10gb switch and plug directly say mac studio to the ugreen since it has 2 ethernet ports in the back? Is the switch absolutely needed? Also if I wanted to connect a PC and Mac to this whole setup the switch would be the way to go right, I could plug all three devices into the switch instead of the router and one cable to the router right?
I have the same Question about skipping the Switch and kind of using the NAS as the Switch😇
I wish that was possible, but you'll need a switch in the middle. It's the only way to do it.
@@RMSPtv Can you elaborate why? It is normally entirely possible to setup a direct connection between the two devices but you would have to correctly configure the address being used.
Do you always have to be on a same wireless? For example if you are outside traveling can you still have access to the NAS?
You can access it remotely, we are going to address that in a future video.
Do you must need static ip for remote access?
Nice video. I'd love to see a tutorial on setting this up as a Time Machine repository, and a comparison between it and the comparable device from Synology and WD.
I'll add that to the list!
I might missed this but is there a way to setup different user access to different drives in the NAS?
We will address that in a future video!
I understand that it might be out of scope for this video but does this NAS support full disk encryption as well?
I'm not sure on that one.
Can you back-up iphones directly to the NAS?
I just got in on the UGreen Kick starter.
This is great! thank you for the long video
You should be able to! I think that is one of the features on the app.
Can you setup a FTP server to transfer images from camera?
I'm not sure on that one.
What's your favorite part of the Ugreen DXP 4800 Plus NAS?
Which SSD work for this system? I would like it to be as quite as possible.
You could use it with any SATA SSD - you would just need SSDs in the 2.5" form factor.
At 2:50 in the video you mention you were going to leave a link to a RAID calculator in the description, but I don't see it? Did you forget to include the link or am I just blind?
Thanks for pointing that out! I've added the link to the description but here's a quick link to the RAID calculator!: www.synology.com/en-us/support/RAID_calculator
At the 33-second mark, you mention that it supports up to 8GB of RAM. How is that possible? The 8GB DDR5 4800MHz RAM offers the latest in processing speeds, enhances both software and system performance, and comes with the option to expand the memory up to 64GB.
True! It comes with 8GB, it supports up to 64GB!
Why does the NAS have two Ethernet-Ports? Can I connect one to the router and the 10GB-Ethernet to my computer? In your Option 3 you showed the need for an Ethernet-Switch... Can't the NAS "Be" the Switch? Thanks for the good Video, that's my only question left:)
No unfortunately. The two ports are there for bonding, redundancy, or to connect the same NAS to two different networks. You will still need a switch.
so my feed has been inundated with this release/embargo lift. def intrigued by the product, but no one is talking about the real world read/write speeds over Thunderbolt, which will literally be the majority of users preference. sounds like there is some unexplained slowness when it's connected via 10gbe, and bizarre that none of the reviews are reporting r/w via thunderbolt. for whatever reason, I've got a weird feeling about this product - essentially a phone charging company releases a very critical workflow component, via KickStarter? smells funny
We won’t do paid reviews so I didn’t want to make that the topic of our video. I can say that I’ve had it in-use for three weeks now and it hasn’t skipped a beat.
My speeds through 10Gb are around 500 MB/s (yes Bytes, not Bits) which is on par with our rack mounted QNAP editing NAS we’ve been using for four years.
Is there an app to interact or use the NAS?
Yep! there is both a mobile and a desktop app to interact/use the NAS!
My goal is to have the 4bay Ugreen NAS with 4 drives on Raid5. However, I'm on a budget and I'd like to start with just 1 drive. Can I run it with just 1 drive for like a year and then expand to 4 drives and switch to raid5?
Yes, but you would need to delete all of the data when you add the additional drives and configure RAID 5.
Tool-less drives, just like in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Just a warning, a password of "imnotgoingtotellyou" is not super secure, sorry.
😂
pity , Ugreen don't ship to Australia
*currently not shipping to...follow along and it will hopefully change.
Dang! Sorry about that!
