Tamidol the gorilla, who gave birth in April, had been struggling with her health for a while. Despite being under close watch, her condition worsened, leading her to become lethargic. This forced the caretakers to make the tough call to euthanize her. A subsequent scan revealed that she had multiple encapsulated abscesses in her liver, adhesions in her stomach, and a similar large abscess in her brain.
Why wasn't she assessed prior to pregnancy during and immediately afterwards? If she was septic which all indications listed here indicate why wasn't protocol taken? Instead this endangered animal was intentionally left to ovulate and become impregnated then degrade her already critical health? So sad to hear about Tamidol. I always loved watching her interact with her siblings, and felt she'd be an amazing mother. Many of our infants have lost their beautiful western lowland gorilla mothers. At least they have top notch vet care to help ease their suffering. ❤ Like Kiango, little Makongo is left and orphan, but with an amazing gorilla family and staff.

And due to global warming and greedy humans, they're losing their habitats daily. People like you are so oblivious. And the Easterns , the only other SPECIES of gorillas, they're losing their habitat at a break necks speed, and are still being poached as well. When their ecosystems cease to exist, so will they. How do zoos handle something like this? Do they allow the other gorillas to be with her body for a while so they can understand she’s no longer alive or do they take the sick animal away and she just never returns? That would be harsh for the family, no? It’s easy to see that the silverback knew something was wrong with her because he’s staying by her side watching over her to protect her.

@@Booboofuzzbucket I can only speak of my experience after being in this field for many years, working with 23 species of primates (also Western Lowland Gorillas). The staff has to start supplement feedings almost immediately when the mother shows signs of illness/death because an infant gorilla isn't like us. They're larger, they need more nutrients, mother's milk. I only experienced two post-partum deaths early on in my career, and the infant was only allowed with the mother prior to euthanasia. That doesn't mean Gaia Zoo did the same, it was just my personal experience.
Tamidol was very young, only 26 years old. Her baby is just 4 months old, and her passing is a huge loss for the entire troop, especially for baby Makongo.💔🦍

Dalila maybe quite elderly but there's Freddy at Cleveland zoo in her 50's taking care of a toddler and baby. Toto who is in her mid/late 40's who has Sumomo. So with help (hopefully from Nala) and bottles from the keepers Makongo should be loved and well cared for. On a side note, I hope you're taking time to take care of yourself. Make sure to spend time for you. 💖💖💐

@@MrScaryLemonHead if she were in the wild she would have really suffered, and her infant left to die. Remember, there is no vet care in the wild. There are a handful of gorilla doctors through a few funds, but it takes days to track and treat an injured/sick gorilla. Gaia has a great vet care system, as all of our accredited zoos. Tamidol was eased of her suffering with keepers to do around the clock feedings, and the program to find a proper surrogate.
@@tracey9116 If her health was in a decline she should have been put on birth control since she is in captivity and that would have solved her getting pregnant therefore endangering the health of the gorilla. That is 100% on the zoo. Keep it out of the wild that had nothing to do with it. She was sick for a while and got pregnant they knew she was declining but did nothing to keep her from getting pregnant. That is sickening.

Many of our infants have lost their beautiful western lowland gorilla mothers. At least they have top notch vet care to help ease their suffering. ❤ Like Kiango, little Makongo is left and orphan, but with an amazing gorilla family and staff.
Makongo is only 4 months old, and it's truly heartbreaking. I hope there will be a surrogate mother like Nemesis to take good care of him. I will visit Makongo and the entire troop as soon as possible and provide timely updates.
Top notch vet care? They are imprisoned and we have taken their land from them, that is the tragedy.

And due to global warming and greedy humans, they're losing their habitats daily. People like you are so oblivious. The mountain gorilla, the SUBSPECIES of the Easterns, can ONLY thrive in their ecosystem! Their food sources are being affected, they're still being poached. And the Easterns , the only other SPECIES of gorillas, they're losing their habitat at a break necks speed, and are still being poached as well. When their ecosystems cease to exist, so will they. And by the way, I've spent 40 years of my life in this field, working with 23 species of NHP (including Western Lowland Gorillas/great Ape species). I have several degrees, certifications, run a gorilla group that's growing daily, network with Africans/African Rangers/ Gorilla Doctors/Rescue workers/Primatologists. How do zoos handle something like this? Do they allow the other gorillas to be with her body for a while so they can understand she’s no longer alive or do they take the sick animal away and she just never returns? @@Booboofuzzbucket I can only speak of my experience after being in this field for many years, working with 23 species of primates (also Western Lowland Gorillas). The staff has to start supplement feedings almost immediately when the mother shows signs of illness/death because an infant gorilla isn't like us. They're larger, they need more nutrients, mother's milk. I only experienced two post-partum deaths early on in my career, and the infant was only allowed with the mother prior to euthanasia. That doesn't mean Gaia Zoo did the same, it was just my personal experience.

@@AllThingsGorilla Thank you for visiting the family soon for us. As a lot of commentators here have said, this has been a huge shock. I don't think any of us saw this coming. Dalila maybe quite elderly but there's Freddy at Cleveland zoo in her 50's taking care of a toddler and baby. Toto who is in her mid/late 40's who has Sumomo. So with help (hopefully from Nala) and bottles from the keepers Makongo should be loved and well cared for.
On a side note, I hope you're taking time to take care of yourself. Make sure to spend time for you. 💖💖💐

@@MrScaryLemonHead if she were in the wild she would have really suffered, and her infant left to die. Remember, there is no vet care in the wild. There are a handful of gorilla doctors through a few funds, but it takes days to track and treat an injured/sick gorilla. Gaia has a great vet care system, as all of our accredited zoos. Tamidol was eased of her suffering with keepers to do around the clock feedings, and the program to find a proper surrogate.

@@tracey9116 If her health was in a decline she should have been put on birth control since she is in captivity and that would have solved her getting pregnant therefore endangering the health of the gorilla. That is 100% on the zoo. Keep it out of the wild that had nothing to do with it. She was sick for a while and got pregnant they knew she was declining but did nothing to keep her from getting pregnant. That is sickening.

What a tragic sisituation for all: Timidal for trying ,to the end , to care for her precious child; the other gorillas for losing a family member ; the people who cared for her to have to make such a heartbreaking decision and ,most of all, for her precious baby to have lost his mother 😢😢😢😢
@michellebishop8743 The whole troop, together with the zookeepers, is collaborating to find the best foster mom for the baby. We should trust the experts to provide the necessary care and protection. Understandably, it’s difficult for us to see the baby away from its family, but this situation is only temporary.♥️🦍💪🤝🤝
