    Awesome video, I wonder if you can do one about oiling a straight razor or if there are alternatives for that, and if there is a way to get water drop marks off a razor?

    • @geofatboy
      @geofatboy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use paraffin oil on the blade. shavenation.com/search?q=paraffin Just a drop and spread it around carefully. Don't touch the sharp edge of the blade. Fine steel wool very gently may help with the spots.

    I have a question. Nobody could help me so I’ll try here. I bought a razor basically new and I find it pretty hard not to cut myself, since my skin gets very dry and irritated, even though I always take a shower before shaving. I have aftershave so I don’t think that’s the problem. After every use I apply oil on the blade as well. I didn’t buy a proper leather strop yet, so the only explanation is that my razor isn’t sharp, well at least I hope...

    • @geofatboy
      @geofatboy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You didn't mention what type of shaving cream and brush you are using (if any). And not stropping your blade before shaving, it sounds like you answered your own question: th-cam.com/video/LLaYdf99PIw/w-d-xo.html

      Yes we have animals. They are just pets for riding and spending time with, nothing for market or auction.
      Although, we are talking about getting a few head of beef for meat next year.
      I just had what was either a huge bobcat or a cougar with an unusually bobcat shaped tail about 50' from my bunkhouse door not so long ago (I just caught the sight of him as he was slinking away through 1 other the pasture fences).
      It's wild up here!

    Great videos geo as always. Im new to straight shaving 75x3 pass shaves. The quickest I can manage is about 25 mins and was hoping to see how it could be done in just 10 mins. A bit misleading as you left out your atg pass on the chin and top lip which are the most tricky time consuming bits. But still a fine shave, and great videos.

    In your opinion, what cuts coarse beard hairs better - straight razor or a DE?

    • @geofatboy
      @geofatboy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A sharp straight razor used properly provides the best shave attainable.

    • @borbetomagus
      @borbetomagus 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      How about XTG on the neck? That's my problem area. I'd be interested in a straight razor, but if the XTG neck results aren't comparable I'll have to stick with a safety razor.
      Also, does Gold Dollar (or other brands) offer inexpensive quarter hollow straight razors?

    • @tatalaticusa719
      @tatalaticusa719 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      borbetomagus I had the same issue using my DE on my neck and chin, and I started doing WTG, WTG again, and then AGT. I’ve been doing that a few years and it’s been very comfortable and it isn’t any less smooth.

    Silly question (but I'll ask it anyway)
    I've never used a DE razor but after seeing 3 of your videos, I'm interested in getting one to see and feel what all the hype and fuss is about
    Can I use normal shaving gel like king of shaves with a DE razor or is soap and a brush better/best or is there no difference really?

    • @morganss84
      @morganss84 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DE shaving is great for everyday shaving. You can use a gel but I have found that using a soap or cream that you lather yourself with a brush enhances the experience. There are a lot less chemicals compared to an aerosol can of shave cream. I have to shave everyday and switched to DE razors over two years ago because of Geo's videos.

    Thank you for sharing. Not sure if I've asked (my apologies if I have) but what's your favorite razor brand and model (straight, SE or DE) and favorite blade?
    As for lubricant, I'm using a regular bath soap (Dalan brand, glycerin, it's around less than a dollar) which works but I may be missing out- I want to try the connoisseur way at least once w/ good pre shave, shave soaps or cream. I wish, like in the fountain pen community (I invite you all to this community- writing w/ the fountain pen is the smoothest- it's also connoisseur)
    What's your favorite preshave if you use that daily, shaving soap or cream (if you're into creams instead) & aftershave (or could you just use 99% alcohol which I have on hand and I have 70% isoprophyl as well on hand)?
    I'll do my best to find them, in time for a nice shave when my GEM 1912 arrives (I'm still keeping my cartridge powered Pro Glide Fusion and DE, just in case SE is not for me). This 100 year old design is a work of art, especially with the art deco- I fell in love with it.
    I wish shaving stores would adapt the fountain pen industry, whereby they have samplers of their ink (it's not free but it's affordable, so you can try before you commit to buying the whole ink bottle). I invite you to the fountain pen community- connoisseur of fine writing much like fine shaving we have here:-)
    If the shaving industry adopts this, it'd be easier to buy affordable different types of preshaves, cream or soap or aftershave (perhaps a sampler that's good for 1 shave so that it's cheap to try and buy. It'd be easier to combine things too).
    Thanks in advance.
    God bless, Proverbs 31

    Hi Geo as always a great demonstration. I started wet shaving with a shavette but also have started using de razors currently using a r41. And occasionally use my shavette. Is a proper straight razor more difficult to use than a shavette.

    • @fredrichl
      @fredrichl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Easier, imho. I find that a shavette digs in easier and thus nicks easier. A ordinary straight razor is just a tad more forgiving.

    I've got a Dovo of Solingen, very simiar to this plus a Dovo shavette and a collection of SE and DE safety razors. There is just too much bloodshed with the Dovo's to be honest though I'm gradually improving, I can see why Gillette came up with safety razors like the Fatboy, etc... The straight razors and the shavettes do give you a close shave though, hands down great shaves. I got the shavette for the covenience of no honing or stropping!
