Thank you! I just finished updating apply/release for 1st through 4th to 318/317mph. The truck still drives just fine and I can sleep well at night knowing my torque converter isn't being abused from just driving around town. Thanks for helping me stop the madness
I just saw the write up that VCM has to tune a high stall converter and is pretty much the same as you in the transmission side. In my cammed camaro with a high stall torque converter and 3.91 I kind of have the same tune. The shifts are quick and smooth AF. This is a very good video for people that are begining to tuning to learn from it.
My stock 2015 Yukon (5.3) has 135k miles on the original TC and trans. I just bought a GM Tow Package Torque converter (dual clutch like the ZL1/CTSV TC, just with 3 bolt holes instead of 6), to replace my stock single clutch TC as preventative maintenance. My trans still shifts like butter and has zero issues. I also bought a Sonnax Zip Kit, the trans go clutch select valves and a TECHM rebuild kit to put in as well. I have HP tuners and will stop the TCC slip 1-4, should get at least another 135k miles out of the TC doing this, we will see how the rest of the trans holds up. This was all about $900 all said and done with OEM trans fluid.
I just finished reinstalling my 6L80 for the second time since 01/19. I'm finding your videos on the 6L80 Rebuild and all related to it very helpful. So thank you very much!
Good video sir. Just preventatively swapped in a HD billet B&I converter in my 47,000 mile 2017 Sierra 2500hd 6.0 4x4 6L90E. I have a snow plowing business and am looking to ensure I can get as much life out of the transmission as possible. Tuning the TCM to disable TCC 1-4 was something the converter company recommended. Thank you for the info.
Man it's too easy for what we do with it. I wouldn't want to be without it. I realize that it $100 per vehicle but a zip kit cost more, both T-go kit are about that, the fluid is almost that, and none of those things gives YOU the power to chose when and how it shifts!
@Richard Wardell can you please define what you mean by TCC Apply? If the tcc is applying, does that mean it is slipping, or not slipping? If a tcc apply percentage is say 20%, does that mean the tcc is slipping 20% or slipping 80%?
Don’t know much about tuning but i agree these transmissions tunes’ definitely are madness. i can totally feel when my lock up kicks in, in first gear. lurches me forward. Starting to think my TC is just going out. But maybe i should just look for someone as comfortable as you around SoCal, to tune my ‘15 1500.
A very friendly video on some cool tuning tips. Thanks for the upload and God bless. 🍻 Think I'll call it a night right here, nice and pleasant...before TH-cam recommends "man eaten by a crocodile" or something.
Depends on what you want to do long term because we charge labor when they come back and ask for something else so if you want to be able to tweak it later buy your own rig and we make a few bucks on the credits too
what all did you change in your tune? We have one doing the same, but only in v4 mode. Have done the tune changes as suggested in this video, but still noticing a bit of vibration. Did you do anything different? This is our first time trying hp....
Can you please define a few terms for me? I know it may seem a bit silly or redundant, but there seems to be different meanings depending on who I talk to. Can you define what you mean when you say "Apply" and "Release"?
Good stuff thank you. Stop the madness and get that torque converter clutch under control; I am in full agreement. These steps can also be applied in SCT Advantage 3 for a Ford transaxle/transmission who's clutch is driving you crazy with aggressive clutching in low gears. This video has been very helpful. God Bless.
So this causes torque converter slip in 1-4 like an older vehicle and more fuel consumption and heat from slip in stop and go traffic. There has got to be an in between .
I really appreciate this I’m at the moment tuning my new rebuilt 6l80 and he did a shity job my factory trans lasted 240thou I’m having some torque slip when commanding 10 so I’m trying to get it worked out I’m doing a lot to the motor will this be ok in a higher performance application it will generate more heat being unlocked in lower gears I do have a bigger coolant system please let me know thank I just subscribed so can’t wait for more
hey!! i have a sierra 14 with transmission acting weird specially in low gears ( clunking slipping it seems the vehicle does not know which gear to be in) will this tune help??
I don't do HP work. I use the tool to make the trans function like it should if the factory cared at all if it lives. I could only assume that you would lower the shift points TPS vs VSS so it shifts in the maximum torque range instead of being tached out. I would lockout the TCC above 70% throttle.
If i sent you my stock file could you look at the trans and see if you might be able to figure out why it’s slipping at cruising speeds or on a slight incline
My transmission acts like it is slipping if I kick it down or roll on the gas to hard or fast and it shifts hard sometimes from first to second sometimes from second to third I MEAN HARD LIKE TO THE POINT OF ME WORRYING ABOUT IT BREAKING SOMETHING. Anyone know if a shift cylinoid, a filter needing replaced, or the torque converter would cause this???? I hope I dont have to have the whole thing rebuilt. Fluid is full and looks and smells good. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
When you get hpt set up and plugged in, read the vehicle. Only need to save the ECM and TCM. A third file that pops up is not needed. Save as, "Stock."
Richard Wardell: Do you (or would you) install transmission tunes onto GM vehicles professionally to users like me (and probably many others in the GM-Trucks forum) who has no interest in going beyond the changes made in this video?
@rdick218 hi. 2017 sierra with 6l80. My mechanic changed torque converter to billet one and said no programing needed. Is he right or should I go to different shop?
I have HP Tuners MPVI2, and I found an item called Mountain Mode. It is in the Tap up/ Tap Down menu. What does it do, and is it available on my 6L80 in my 2014 GMC Sierra 4 X 4. PCM of North Carolina did a tune for me, engine & transmission, I requested that they do this for me, but it wasn't done. I'm not bad mouthing PCM of North Carolina, the email tune they did works fine. This Mountain Mode shows that it is disabled, can I enable it myself. Just wondering if you have ever tried this.
I would have kept the lockup in 4th gear. As far as what you said about 5th gear lockup at 31mph, it won't really ever be in 5th at that speed unless you have a low gear rear end. I think the lowest factory one in a 16 1500 model was a 3.73. It likely would only see 5th gear when slowing down. I don't think my truck ever even shifts to 5th until around 40.
noo why do i want to disable the tcc apply in all the gears? i want this trans over 4l80e for the extra gears and the ability to lock the converter in all gears?
Very informative video. I appreciate your ability to speak and explain things in a way that’s easily understandable.
This has been the most information I have been able to find on this topic so far. Thank you I will be using your guide to tune my 6 speed.

Pattern A is Tow Haul and B is tap shift normally. Those can be changed as well( trans- shift pressures- pattern select)
Thanks Dave! We can use all the help we can get!
Great video! I’m looking to purchase this software after bypassing my thermostat and installing a transmission cooler I’m still seeing high temps.
