It was designed to take out armored vehicles. So less spread is better, you want to repeatedly punch that armor until it breaks out. One shell probably won't be enough, but a few hundreds in a couple of seconds, definitely. Even though a plane is moving and shaking, so I doubt the grouping would actually be the same as in a firing range environment anyway. Not to mention you'd fire it from hundreds of meters away in a combat scenario, not a 50m range. You can see it later in the video when they fire it from the actual plane. The spread is much more pronounced.

This happens with most high-power guns and rotary autocannons. All of those fire supersonic rounds, meaning that if you hear any of them you're still alive.
Yeah at 1:28 you first hear the rounds hit the target, then the sonic booms of the rounds flying past and only then the sound of the actual shots being fired.
The gun uses both API and HEI rounds. Which can obliterate Armor and Infantry alike. No it doesn't just switch ammo like some arcade games, it has both, holds both. 30x173mm are the rounds size.
Your citizens spent $3trillion on all that firepower for you and you still could not defeat the Afghans, even after 20 years of carpet bombing all the villages.
What's cool about watching most of these clips is that you usually hear two sets of bursts. The first one you hear is actually the rounds hitting the ground or target. The second, quieter, smoother one you hear is from the gun firing. In most cases, cameras and microphones are much closer to the target than they are to the plane, so it takes longer for the sound from the plane to get to the microphones.

No, its ment as an anti material round, not for sniper, in its class of anti matirial rifles its actually very small, but modern warfare doesnt need large anti matirial rifles like in the world wars, so the .50 bmg makes for a light versatile anti matirial rifle that can be carried around, but people seem to worship the .50 cal due to what they think it a HUGE round, but it really isnt, there was a rifle that shot the same rounds as this valken. For an example of a good sniper rifle, take a look at an m40, or even better an l96, 7.62 nato, a round that packs a punch and is managable enough to be accurate, and not give away the sharpshooter's position, plus you can carry more ammo
All of this and a 20mm can be a 1 hit mutable kill if aimed properly
6 ปีที่แล้ว +18
.50 can hit an engine in a car and knock it clean out, it can hit an engine of a small aircraft and take it out. It's main purpose is not for killing humans. There's a reason why so many people in the military use a .223 or 5.56. That's all you need to kill a human in 1 or 2 shots. .308 and above are for greater distances and typically used by snipers.
Depends on the enemy, when theres a enemy with good armor, i would prefer 7,62mm. But yes, 5,56mm is more than enough for most cases and the best ammo at the moment for our soldiers.
@@harleyme3163 I love my country. We're the only ones to build a powerful gun and say "I wonder how we can make it deadlier?" And then someone else says "Let's build a plane around it?" And everyone is like "FUCK YEAH!"
The a 10 has a problem were the guns recoil and movement make the a 10 shake, by the pilots hits in 12 meter radius of were they were aiming is considered accurate
The sheer recoil from the GAU-8 is so massive, A-10 pilots are trained to only fire the weapon in 1-second or less bursts, since the recoil actually slows the plane down.
I wondered why the A10 was getting phased out. After all it’s the perfect option for close air support. Lots of ammunition and multiple places to mount various kinds of ammo. It’s a win win right? Then I looked at the friendly fire statistics, looked at the Vulcan again and immediately understood the logic. It kills to be sure. Problem is it doesn’t always kill what you want it to.
@@mr.jamrob4505 as far as I know one of the reason why they tried to replace the A-10 is because close air support aren't as effective as it used to be, A-10 with it's full load can take out any ground targets but if the enemy have any air defence A-10 most likely wont last long, it happen to Su-57 in Ukraine they can't even get close to the front line due to heavy air defence from both side, as so USAF develope F-35 that can do ground support and also can defend itself

People often quote it in comments about the A-10 as a joke, meant to entertain rather than be descriptive. th-cam.com/video/jHgZh4GV9G0/w-d-xo.html
FYI last time the Air Force publicly disclosed the price of the rounds used in the GAU-8 it they were $137 a piece - meaning emptying the magazine (about 14-15 seconds of total firing time though you can't fire bursts longer than about 2 seconds because it will stall the aircraft) costs about $160k.
They dont tell you that it can only operate where opposition air power and sam's are non existant. In other words it is used for clean up operations on a battlefield that is already taken, or extremely remote.
It's not a matter of targeting. They're firing those rounds from better than a mile away while flying at a couple hundred miles an hour. The fact that they can hit a moving vehicle at all is insane.
Too right, sorry wasn't trying to be a smart ass here :). I was just thinking about the technology behind the targeting. They must be using some amazing gimbals and taking a huge force to.

@@olekkuvppl Exactly. We have frickin targeting pods that can see a guy in a bush in the pitch black from 90ish miles away. Wtf do you need to get within a mile for? That wouldn't work against a conventional military even a weak one.
My grandpa told me about one of his experiences in the Vietnam War when he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army (the only story he has ever told me, he doesn't talk about about it to anyone) when he was captain of a patrol boat, and had been ambushed by VC forces. He called in Puff the Magic Dragon, AKA a C-130 gunship mounted with a 20mm Vulcan, 40mm Bofors and a 120mm Howitzer. He said the targets were only a hundred yards or so away when the Vulcan started singing, and as the plane flew overhead it rained 20mm casings down on them and their boat. A couple soldiers were injured by 200+mph shell casings (the shells not having enough time to decelerate to terminal velocity from the plane's 3-400mph velocity), and there were were dents and dings all over the boat afterward. He said it was needless to tell everyone to take what cover there was. The ambush problem was solved though, a plane with a gun in its side flying circles like a predatory bird is kind of hard to avoid lol. Shitty situation, awesome gun.
Bryce Peters Indeed. Pity dragonfire shells are to short range for use... hmmm.... delay activation using a proxi-fuse so the magnesium doesn't light till it is within effective range of the target?

It was designed to take out armored vehicles. So less spread is better, you want to repeatedly punch that armor until it breaks out. One shell probably won't be enough, but a few hundreds in a couple of seconds, definitely.
Even though a plane is moving and shaking, so I doubt the grouping would actually be the same as in a firing range environment anyway. Not to mention you'd fire it from hundreds of meters away in a combat scenario, not a 50m range.
You can see it later in the video when they fire it from the actual plane. The spread is much more pronounced.
They also have explosive rounds for personnel.
Farther away there will be more spread btw
It's fired from a fast flying plane, you can see in the video itself the spread is larger than a humvee when fired while moving.
no you're wrong its meant to destroy armored vehicles

What's cool about watching most of these clips is that you usually hear two sets of bursts. The first one you hear is actually the rounds hitting the ground or target. The second, quieter, smoother one you hear is from the gun firing. In most cases, cameras and microphones are much closer to the target than they are to the plane, so it takes longer for the sound from the plane to get to the microphones.

@@NOTABIGDODO thanks for explaining none of us knew I don't think.
This is why .50 caliber doesn't impress me
No, its ment as an anti material round, not for sniper, in its class of anti matirial rifles its actually very small, but modern warfare doesnt need large anti matirial rifles like in the world wars, so the .50 bmg makes for a light versatile anti matirial rifle that can be carried around, but people seem to worship the .50 cal due to what they think it a HUGE round, but it really isnt, there was a rifle that shot the same rounds as this valken.
For an example of a good sniper rifle, take a look at an m40, or even better an l96, 7.62 nato, a round that packs a punch and is managable enough to be accurate, and not give away the sharpshooter's position, plus you can carry more ammo
All of this and a 20mm can be a 1 hit mutable kill if aimed properly
.50 can hit an engine in a car and knock it clean out, it can hit an engine of a small aircraft and take it out.
@@panthera8115 exactly, that's why 5.56 is used for assault rifles, 7.62 flys further which is who it is used by shapshooters

That's almost entirely pilot error, it's not like the gun is choosing its own targets.
They've tried to phase it out purely to put in newer projects to justify military spending budget
Any other excuse you hear is bullshit
@@mr.jamrob4505 as far as I know one of the reason why they tried to replace the A-10 is because close air support aren't as effective as it used to be, A-10 with it's full load can take out any ground targets but if the enemy have any air defence A-10 most likely wont last long, it happen to Su-57 in Ukraine they can't even get close to the front line due to heavy air defence from both side, as so USAF develope F-35 that can do ground support and also can defend itself

The gun was so precise they had to "fuck up a bit" its aim so to better cover a certain area - useful in case you're targeting a group of skinnies, or vehicles (you want to spray a bit, so that everyone can get some)
W Winterheart IIRC, the GAU-8 actually produces more thrust than the A-10 Warthog. If they were able to fire for long enough the plane would start going backwards, even under full thrust.

A couple soldiers were injured by 200+mph shell casings (the shells not having enough time to decelerate to terminal velocity from the plane's 3-400mph velocity), and there were were dents and dings all over the boat afterward.
