      And like, that first like is actually legit if you take 'talking to' to be a phrase that means flirting with and coming onto, which it is in some places and Im not really against that because that's how language works and it's just a phrase, but if taken that way, the first like is good!
      If your man is flirting with or coming onto another woman, she is not the problem, he is. That's a solid thing.
      And then the second line makes it obvious she does not mean 'talking to as a phrase but rather literally and it's literally that 'they had us in the first half' meme for me

    • @sleepingkirby
      @sleepingkirby 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@gin2594 Like yeah, but no. Yeah, if she meant "talking to" to be flirting with. But then the ambiguity because confusing. Either for the girlfriend or the boyfriend. If she said "Why is she talking to you?" The boyfriend can be confused and be like "...because she had something to say?" But also, that type of language usage is what makes words forbidden. So in this relationship, "talking" == "flirting" which means you can't ever talk to someone of the opposite gender. Like ever. So, for her, any sort of talking is tantamount to flirting and shouldn't ever be done.
      And yes, if a man in a relationship is coming to someone that's not his partner, that's not okay (unless it's a kink they have or they have an open relationship or something).
      But the line doesn't start what if he comes onto a woman, it literally starts with "If a woman is talking to your man..."
      Like, let's assume the benefit of the doubt to the largest possible degree. Let's assume the tweet meant:
      "If a woman is flirting with your man..."
      There's no qualifier to say who started it or that if that is even a concern to this person. If you're with your boyfriend (regardless of your gender), and some woman starts flirting with your boyfriend, well, how is that his fault? Let's say he's with you and he started it, he is a problem, but so is she if she flirts back when you're obviously with him. In which case, why are you with that man in the first place? These aren't things that just come out of the blue unless you're literally on your first or second date.
      Now, let's assume that, that she really does mean "If a woman is talking to your man..." like most rational adults do. Again, no qualifier if he started it.
      If he starts it... yeah, communication is a thing people living in society needs.
      If she starts it... yeah, communication is a thing people living in society needs.
      Like, as a cis male who learned English as a second language, these are the things that drive Americans mad and they don't know it. I try to tell them and they're like "that's just how languages evolve. Deal with it.". Assigning ambiguity, guilt, shame, connotation with completely opposite meanings, to everyday, mundane words is not a good idea. In an attempt to de-sexualize conversations, people came up euphemisms. But because these kind of things are so prominent as a part of life, but also on people's minds all the time because they have to have like a subroutine in their minds dedicated to dancing around it, everything became a sexual innuendo or the meaning of ordinary things default to sexual innuendo. "They slept together". Like how would you literally say "they slept together" without meaning they had sex? "I'd like to his/her " Ex. "I'd like to see his console". Hell, even "Becky bought a cucumber." All this results in virtually everything being sexualized. Man buys a sports car? He's compensating. Woman wears too much makeup? She's attention seeking. Men wears a lot of flashy things? He's peacocking. Woman wearing shorts and a shirt that doesn't cover her stomach? She's down to f*ck.
      Or... he likes sports cars. She's still learning how to put on makeup. He just likes accessories. And it's f*cking hot where that woman lives.
      And because the vast amounts of English speakers on the internet are from America and having lived in the US as a cis male, I need to say this. Yes, women definitely do get the short end of the stick in terms of social stigma and possible demonization and social shunning from the ambiguity and connotation of language. Like my sister and I had VERY different experiences and we're only 3 years apart in age. But this type of thing is bad for any and all genders and peoples and it's contributing to toxic masculinity and femininity. Like, this is how you get the "Have sex with a man to prove to yourself that not gay" line of thinking. And also, "She wears makeup, she must be a witch!" type of thinking (which, I think is going to make a come back pretty soon with the way people are talking).
      And, to any single woman out there. If a guy blatantly and unabashedly disregards your needs and desires to be treated like a person with feeling and needs, run. There are plenty of guys out there. Find someone that wants to walk close to you because they like to. Wants to feed you tasty food because they like seeing the joy on your face. Wants to be around you because they like your presence. Just remember that guys like that aren't usually the one with a chiseled boy or a flashy cars because that's not their priority.

    • @gin2594
      @gin2594 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@sleepingkirby It's a context thing and sure for some places they wouldn't be able to tell, but for places who use it they can recognize the context in which changes the meaning of the phrase. And as for your opinion on American language, I'll remind you of two things, one, English is hardly the most confusing language, Swedish has far far more words and phrases with ambiguous meanings that depend on context, not only that but even if it's not common I'm sure every language has some ambiguous language in one form or another. Two: America is known as a mixing pot for a reason. Yeah, we have hella racism problems, but ultimately we are chock full of many different types of people. Louisiana has an entirely different /dialect/. Our language kind of needs to be free range to accommodate that. We can't hold rigid language qualifications when determining the language of hundreds of different cultures. Yes, it's confusing, but it's not a flaw.
      "Why are you talking to her?" Spoken calmly, is taken literally. "Why are you talking to her?" Spoken angrily is taken to mean flirting, barring another reason the person might be mad about it. It's the tone and context. In this sentence, the context makes it mean flirting, it's not until the second line that changes that context to be taken literally.
      This does not mean all talking is then considered flirting. The two contexts make them mean two different things. Think of it like lead and lead. I lead the ducks. I need pencil lead. Different context, different meaning.
      Whether the person or the partner starts it, if they are flirting, the partner is the problem. That's someone cheating on you, you should be more angry at them then the one who's flirting with them. Yes, if the person knows you two are together and decides to flirt, they are also at fault, but the wrong that has been done to you comes mostly from the partner.
      I will concede it is ambiguous whether they mean both parties are flirting or just the one, but as the phrase usually means both, and if there was no context that points otherwise, it would mean both.
      These things you list are a part of culture. They are social customs that the people within the culture know and use. Phrases, metaphors, and even the way people present each other, are all tied to culture. Are they all good? No, and good people do try to change things if they aren't. The assumption on a person's sex life based on appearances is one of those, I agree. But regardless, things like these are natural to the human race and are everywhere, even if you're so used to it you don't notice until you go somewhere with different customs. "They slept together" means to fuck, "They slept in the same bed for the night" or "they fell asleep in the same bed" means it literally. It's the context, the tone, the way you say it, and every single language has these. It's said that half of communication is in body language and tone, not words. Languages have quirks, they change, they get mixed up, it's what they do. Americans are good at flowing with a constant rapid change and keeping up because that's a part of our culture.
      I think you've gotten off point here, the point was that, taking away the context of the second line, the first would be read as "if your man is flirting with another woman, he's the problem" and we don't specify every single little detail so she's not going to say "he's most of the problem" because that can be assumed.
      As for social stigmas and how they come out as language: one, yes, out language can be cruel, a good example is the existence of slurs. But "if a woman wears make up she's a witch or a slut" is an idea, not an quirk of our language. We just use the language to convey the idea as that is what language is for.

    When a cat bites you like that - where it doesn't quite break the skin, but you definitely feel it - it's telling you something important.
    Cats' communicate 99% inaudibly; they act out, not quite miming, to convey info.
    Cats, being small & territorial, can be vulnerable to larger predators and territorial rivals - and they know it.
    Considering how big humans are to them, it takes a lot to trust us - and trust is everything to a cat.
    Ever see a cat do a slow eyeblink at you? It's telling you it trusts you by closing it's eyes - you could attack while it's not able to see you, but it trusts you not to.
    Same thing with baring it's stomach - it's showing trust: that you won't attack it's soft belly to hurt or kill it.
    Which is why a cat attacks those that rub their bellies when they do this - they trusted that person but had their belly attacked anyway.
    Having a cat give you love bites is one of the highest regards they'll give: they're telling you that not only do they trust you, but they know you trust them - because, sure, they could bite the fuck out of you,... But they don't, they just bite a little to show you.
    That's a tribal animal telling another tribal animal it recognizes a bond between them.
    So, yeah, that cat loved you.

    I ACTUALLY HAVE A THEORY FOR WHY BACK-PATTING HUGS EXIST!
    I had to wear a chest-to-pelvis, hard plastic back brace for 6 months and I was incredibly touch-starved because I couldn't feel the hugs. But after hugging my dad (who will literally SLAP your back when you hug him), I realised that must be the only way you can feel a hug through armour! So much like how a handshake originally existed to show that your sword hand is empty, back-patting hugs still exist because that was the only way soldiers/knights could show their affection through their armour and the tradition continued!
    (Hug-centric historians please feel free to confirm or correct my theory)

    • @GuiSmith
      @GuiSmith 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      This… makes sense. Not a historian, just someone who’s worn a backpack plenty of times, and yes, you can feel a hard back pat through a bag or armour, or at least hear it. It’s the reassurance of human contact in a way that also gets around the _massive_ ridge in the front of breastplates that were designed to deflect swords and arrows with extra space to slow them down if they broke through the plate while allowing for arm motion.

Not saying you need to be those things in order to be considered a man, but just the idea of someone looking at my super nice yet still pretty buff and active grandpa and acting this way around him simply because he has a cat, and loves that cat, is hilarious.

Namely indirectly with jabs since that's what's commonly taught is acceptable. Instead of upfront saying "I'm so proud that someone could see the good I've seen in you; I care and support you" it's "you've been whipped" and "I'll miss him" with a smile on their face the whole time. In other words they're total tsunderes about it.

    I was curious about the "Your Wife Is Not Your Best Friend And Thinking She Is Will Kill Your Marriage" article, so I looked it up, and although it's a clickbaity title and not amazingly well-written, it's nowhere near as bad as the title looks. Basically, it talks about how due to the financial and housing interdependence, the expectations on spouses and friends are different. It gives the example of someone quitting their job to go do something else and says that their friends should be mostly supporting their decision, whereas their spouse has more right and maybe obligation to be questioning it because of how it affects both of them, and that putting those expectations you have of your friends on your spouse can be unreasonable and harmful.

    • @Lisa_Flowers
      @Lisa_Flowers 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      That's fair, but that's also a fairly limited view of friendship. Your partner can still be your best friend as long as you also consider that they're you're life partner and your decisions affect them in a way that would be different for a best friend you don't live with. People also sometimes live long term with solely platonic best friends, so in that case you would also have to address decisions in a similar this-affects-us-both way.

    • @santagonewrong
      @santagonewrong 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@Lisa_Flowers Yeah, absolutely. I definitely don't agree fully with the article. And there are definitely relationships that blur some of the traditional lines between the relationship types (including the example of totally platonic best friends who share finances and live together long-term). I think it's totally fair to criticize it for being overly traditional and heteronormative.
      But it's certainly less bad than it sounds, and the snipping of it's headline out of context and memifying it as the straights not being okay seems deceptive and possibly deliberately so (by whomever made the meme, not by OT).
      That said, whoever wrote the headline was arguably angling for that to happen, so maybe the criticism _does_ lie primarily on the article.

    The question of if it's gay to own a cat brought to mind the time someone pointed out to me that "Black people don't own cats". My mind was blown because I had never noticed it before.
