    The difference is more about timing instead starting direction.
    It was missing to mention that Salsa on 2 gets its name because the accent is in the step 2 and 6 while in Salsa on 1 those are quick and short steps.

    only one question after I watched this video, what's the difference?

    • @sophiedancesport
      @sophiedancesport 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nikita M there is no big difference on the footwork.
      The difference is about when the weight is being redirected !
      Salsa on 1 , the weight is being redirected on 1
      The leader starts forward.
      Salsa 2: the weight is being redirect on 2 !
      The leader starts backward .
      I hope that helps! ;-)

    • @youtuub
      @youtuub 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      niki on1 folks do on2 all the time too, they just don't realize it, like in cross body lead for example the lady is invited to come forward and to pass the lead, well on2 is just that, a way to facilitate cross body lead, by inviting/drawing in the follower on the very first start of the move.

    Her salsa on2 beat is correct but when you step your 1 it should be slightly in front of your left not parallel to it. Same with partner work you should start with your left foot slightly in front of your right

    • @websalsero
      @websalsero 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Erick BP yes, correct! You never close in the middle. The same for salsa on1. When you explain that for beginners, they tend to stop in the middle, rather to pause but still moving to next stop. They end up dancing like robots. Teachers think it is easier to teach like this, but you not doing them a favor showing something nobody does while dancing.

    • @JohnDoe-ll2df
      @JohnDoe-ll2df 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Beginners are often taught to step to the middle, and then when they have that down, they are taught to step past the other foot.

    • @sophiedancesport
      @sophiedancesport 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like to teach feet together and then explain to my student that it depends on how much space they have to dance.
      You can travel the basic or keep it more on the spot depending on how much space you have.
      It is important to know both , and be able to adapt to your social environment. And you need to start somewhere when you teach someone novice :-)
      Happy New Year !

      so on-2, basically you 'rock-step' on 3 and not 1, you travel on your 1 and 2. This was the way I was taught salsa on-2.

  • @nickquik

    Ok. I was confused at first. But now I understand.... she said she was going to show the footwork with n distinction of the follower or leader. I missed that part and it made it seem like 6 different type of foot work....ok so the first two footwork, on1 was leader footwork and on2 was follower. The last 4 was on1 leader and follower and on2 was leader and follower....

      Yes for salsa on 2 , as a leader, you would start your rotation as you step forward on 6 on your left foot for a right turn.
      ( since the leader starts backward on 1)
      For the follower right turn starts on 2 as she steps forward on her left foot.

      HelloDiego
      Hello Diego
      234 678 is called Mambo when 123 - 567 changing direction on 2 ( or breaking on 2) is called New York Style Salsa or Salsa on 2 :-)

    • @ehm2392
      @ehm2392 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      234-678 is mambo, not Salsa on2.

    • @cmeast
      @cmeast 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Salsa on-2 should be danced to the instrumentation, specifically the clave and the tumbao. Stepping back into your center would then be on the second part of the tumbao, so normally between the 4 and the 5, and between the 8 and the 1. This is hard.
      Because it's hard, it's often taught by the numbers instead. Some schools teach 234 678, when you return to the centre on 4 and 8. Some schools teach 235 671, where you return to the centre on 5 and 1. Some schools teach 'quick quick slow'
      234 678 is easiest, and fits the music better, because you're still stepping back to the tumbao, but it's the same rhythm as on-1 and so you're losing that beautiful 'quick, quick, slow' feel where you're gliding through the slow, 'return to centre' step.
      235 671 has that slow, gliding feel and it still feels good musically - the one is an important beat, especially for newer songs due to the prevalence of on-1, but it's missing the tumbao which is heartbeat of salsa songs.
      This is why some teach 'quick quick slow', with the break at 2 and 6, but ignoring the other numbers. This... kinda works, but can lead to misunderstanding where people don't know where to step.
      Ultimately, we all want to dance connecting to the music as much as possible, as there's no quick solution. All you can do is listen to the song, and step on the beats that call to you and that your partner can feel. I will dance on-2 with all of the above, depending on the tempo, the instruments and my follower.
      As for the names, I've heard lots of terminology used (and misused) by experts (and 'experts') so I don't worry about whether people want to call it New York Style, or Mambo, or just On-2.

    Without watching, Salsa is on the 1, Mambo is on the 2. Mambo has a time signatures closer to ChaCha. Being that you rock forward or backward on the 2 is chacha as well.

    • @ftobin
      @ftobin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point about cha-cha breaking on 2. I actually learned cha-cha breaking on 1 -- my teacher thought (and I agree) it matches modern music better because the big hit will be on 1. In fact, for almost all dance styles, having the emphasis on 1 seems to fit modern music better.

      123 - 567 = a tiempo
      234 - 678 = contratiempo
      Es verdad que se baila el Son en contratiempo. ¡Pero no todos los bailes en contratiempo son automáticamente bailes del Son!
      It's true that the Son is danced in contratiempo timing. But not all dances that are danced on contratiempo timing are automatically Son dances.

      @@alexsirko7881 we agree on that. My post about the sequences 123-567 and 234 - 567 referred the dance steps and timing when dancing a tiempo and contra tiempo respectively. But, for instance, one could even dance a tiempo with a 345 - 781 sequence (which I regularly do).
