the thing the original dmc has that all the others seem to have lost is a genuine horror atmosphere. i still remember the distinct feeling of being a kid THINKING i was playing a horror game with the dark hallways and creepy ass music and just about stopped playing when the first marionette started moving... but then the drums kicked in and i remembered i had a big ass sword on my back and from there i was hooked. i would looove the series to really embrace that angle again. keep dante badass, but really lead into the freaky ass settings.

The first game is by far the most immersive game in the franchise. I'm not just saying this because I prefer its gothic aesthetic and the choral chants of its music over the more youthful tone of the fifth game, although I do. But you can see that they put effort into characterizing Mallet Island very well. The notes you find in bookstores telling the history of the Castilians, the architecture of the castle makes some sense, the trip on the boat, the darkness chasing you on your return trip, the catacombs submerged in water, the space deforming as you get closer to hell, the angelic throne of Mundus. It's something that the first game has and the others lack, if only the third game with the Temen Ni Gru tower can come close.

      @@TheXell I... Can't really agree.
From a comercial standpoint, remaking a game that is already popular makes more sense than an unpopular one.
And comercial success aside, if you are going to remake a game, it should have SOMETHING that's really worth revisiting.
Personally, I think the titles most worth of a remake are neither the best games in history nor the worst, but the games that share a mix of really good ideas, with problems in their execution - whether it's because of problems during development, or aspects that didn't age well. (The prime example of this would be Xenogears. If you ever played disk 2, you know what I'm talking about.)
For the DMC series, the original DMC probably fits the bill the best. (The atmosphere is fantastic, and the combat still holds up for the most part, but it has some pretty clear rough edges.)
Another criteria would be games that are important to fully understand a series lore. Which, again, DMC1 fits the bill much better than DMC2. (Even the recap on DMC5 almost completely skips the events on DMC2. ^^;)

The only reason I'd be interested in a DMC3 remake is if Capcom overhauled some of the really bad enemy types. Dog shit enemies like Dullahan, Fallen, Soul Eaters, and even some bosses like Gigapede are what's holding DMC3 back from being borderline perfect IMO.
That being said, I don't trust modern Capcom with anything else. DMC3R might end up as a better combo sandbox than the original overall, but there's still certain aspects from DMCV I'm not a fan of that could carry over.
Plenty of people found DMC3 to be too difficult and so Capcom decided to overcorrect with DMC4 onwards. DmC remains the most lenient of the franchise but DMCV is definitely the most lenient of the mainline series (not counting DMC2). an overabundance of Gold orbs, hyper-lenient ranking system, low enemy aggression, floaty gravity, ETC. At the very least, if Capcom insists on having the challenge toned down from what it was previously, I wish they'd borrow the "Hardcore" toggle from DmC: Definitive Edition.
I'd worry about DMC3's gorgeous art direction being retained too. Love Temen-ni-gru.

@@DrekonV Fair enough. A lot of people take issue with Temen-ni-gru's colour pallet. Personally, though, I love it. I wouldn't usually in most other games.
The lack of colour and (traditional) decoration gives it a sense of oppressiveness. That coupled with the bizarre combination of harsh geometric shapes and splashes of gothic architecture (something we don't see often enough for my liking) gives Temen-ni-gru a very uncanny feeling. It very much feels like what a demon's interpretation of a purely utilitarian structure in an almost brutalist sense would look like.

    @QP9237 ปีที่แล้ว +11

As much of a boon as Itsuno has been to the series as a whole, DMC1 is not the same as the rest of the series in its inherent design language. If you’re gonna play DMC1 after starting with the later games you need to check your expectation that styling/combo strings is the default approach. Also in my eyes, air raid is as much of a crutch as Devil Trigger itself is depending on how you use it. Just because you can spam it without actually pushing yourself to understand the game on its level doesn’t mean the game is dated just because strong move is strong. As cool as Bayonetta is as a spiritual successor to DMC1, I can’t say I would like to see it’s general approach in DMC as a whole, so if DMC1 would get a remake I would want both Kamiya and Itsuno to tag team the development and provide their combined perspectives, for what would be in my eyes the perfect/ideal DMC game.
DMC1, as a whole, is a more complete “game” with enough meaningful variety, compared to its continuations. The environment/atmosphere is effective for Kamiya’s original intent for the game, to be more gothic-horror, something which Itsuno notably muted in the series with time (the horror more so than the gothic). The expertly integrated use of atmospheric sound and gothic moody music really established the island as living breathing character, especially when you see the occasional organic mobile elements of the island and the demon world. The environment even directly influences your play style and strategy as it shifts from narrow to open, almost on some level antagonizing you. Some/most people might find it irrelevant or as padding, but the level of interactable detail and lore in the world really allows you to form a sense of awareness and connection to the setting on a level that the later games only more so provided a pretty sandbox with wide open spaces (almost like a wrestling arena for you to go ham in). Retrospectively yes I would have enjoyed having 1 or 2 more devil arms, but for the ones available the two are balanced to what the game asks you to manage with it giving you the option of being nimble or a bruiser, but requiring you to be judicious at times (remember styling is more than just looking cool, you have to be effective for the situation at hand). When you take into account the open-narrow variance of the castle you have effective strategies and locations to shift between Ifirit and Alastor to maximize your power and play conditions. The same is true of Nightmare beta, a weapon that I think is slept on because people overly rely on devil trigger to cheese the demons, especially if you know you can use nightmare beta more freely while already in DT again it’s about maximizing your approach not waffling through the game with overpowered moves. I’ve noticed that once you get into higher levels of the skill ceiling DT is mostly used strictly for the spectacle and less so as a crutch, and even then taunting is far more frequent at higher skills. A tip for people who are willing to try it, but the taunt mechanic is designed to give you the most DT refill if you are standing directly in contact with the demons with refill reductions the further away you are.
The demon designs, while at this point being what I would call classics, are still effective or at least on the same level compared to the latter series (if not more so) without being over designed, but more importantly are mechanically the more complex especially since Itsuno took over. With the Itsuno era the demons became effectively sandbags for you to style on with limited resistance once you started a combo string, where as DMC1 enemies had variable health within their own category and would deal variable damage even within a specific difficulty mode. The utilization of “critical hits/kills” on a variety of enemies/bosses, and not just Sin Scissors, means a high percentage of the demons had effective strats outside of purely “styling” on them. The reason a lot of newcomers to the series (people that started with the later games) would find a boss like Nightmare hard/annoying is because it goes against the brute force styling mentality that the Itsuno era is built on, instead requiring you to actually plan your approach to the boss, being a mini game onto itself as your mistakes will carry over into the later fights. I would argue none of the bosses are truly as outdated as you might think they are, instead I would ask you to actually LEARN their patterns and actually utilize their critical hits more effectively. Kamiya’s game wanted you to look cool yes, but not at the expense of turning the game into a one-sided affair, with the demons intended to be legitimate concerns that had to be gauged effectively with skill lest being killed as seen by the unique demon kills/fatalities (the only game in the series to actually do this for the demons).
Say what you will, DMC1 has the most natural and effective difficulty, whereas the later games made the difficulty into a static damage scaler where every enemy hit with a specific value for a specific attack at a specific difficulty setting (demonstrated by the design language of the segmented/metered health bars from DMC3 onwards), DMC1 in all of its difficulty always allowed the demons to do variable damage for any attack at any difficulty level, with newer attacks being more frequent/specific to higher difficulties. Where the later games just turned difficulty into “don’t get hit, not cool” runs, DMC1 was never “don’t get hit” but instead “is this a hit that I can survive” playing into its horror nature, with bosses at times being able to crunch you in 3-5 hits if not careful or unlucky.
As much as the underwater and rail shooting sections are ragged on, at most they amount to max 4 out of 21 effective missions (yes 23 but literally two missions are less than 4 mins). They don’t overstay their welcome and are more so in the spirit of being a “game” with variety. Is it entirely effective? Meh but hey it’s in the game and Kamiya wasn’t afraid to attempt it, with the rail-shooting missions honestly being a lovable intermission when they show up. At times it felt like Itsuno attempted to keep some of these puzzles out of respect to the series origin, but at others just strictly to pad missions with the dice game and nidhogg barriers being the biggest repeat offenses. Ultimately yeah DMC knows what it is at this point so asking for some spontaneity is moot until Itsuno/team actually feel up to doing it on their own.
In terms of characterization and narrative, DMC3 is the peak of the whole series (5 is honeymoon experience with fan service level payoff, good in the moment). As much as Itsuno and Langdon’s take on Dante is the default at this point (because duh), Kamiya’s version while being related to his later incarnations is more grounded in his portrayal without being a overpowering presence. DMC3 and DMC5 Dante really play up the one sidedness of his brash character, and I enjoy it; DMC4 Dante is honestly closer to DMC1 Dante, having the quippiness but grounded confidence. My perspective on Dante is more on the level of Matthewmatosis. Voice acting is just something of the era so I have nothing to say outside of having grown up with the series since it came out back in 2001 I have my funny/favorite moments in each game (excluding DmC, never played). To be clear I love the ham and cheese sandwich level dialogue of DMC1 to the point I’ll dub it on occasions when I power play the game 😂

Holy fucking shit this comment is peak. Finally someone else who sees DMC1 for the air-tight, laser-focused full package that it is. The pacing, the smart enemy design, the interesting arena layouts, I can go on & on. There's honestly only two things about the game that I think haven't aged well: Dante's gamefeel/frame data & the sound mixing in cutscenes. I feel like those can be fixed to with a simple hex edit and/or mod. Other than that it's in my top 2 DMC games.

    • @QP9237
      @QP9237 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@therentpursuer9869 Honestly nowadays there’s only two DMC games I play on a regular. DMC1 and DMC4se. DMC1 is my quintessential DMC game and I love it as a game with its mechanical ingenuity and strong atmosphere, plus it has the best difficulty. DMC4se by virtue of DMC4, IMO, is the peak of DMC combat; adding the most broken character that is Vergil, the depth of the combat mechanics is enough to draw me back.
DMC3 as I said is the peak of the story so I do enjoy occasionally watching the cutscenes, but its subpar difficulty mechanics and its understandable style mechanic limitations make it less than desirable to play than either DMC1 or DMC4. For me DMC5 is something I can appreciate for more what it means to the parent series, but its fan service level of story telling, a mediocre meme machine character that was V, and the nerfing and focus on “greater accessibility” in terms of its mechanics makes DMC5 a honeymoon experience that quickly fizzled out. To be clear I absolutely enjoy Nero as a nice foil to a wiser Dante, but to conclude the brothers saga with him is a poor move. Mundus has nothing to do with Nero, being three degrees separated from him. Vergil and Dante should’ve had a game that was strictly focused on them working together to avenge their mother, potentially find their father, and for Vergil to fully move past his trauma. Making V an externalized tool to ham-fistedly “develop” his human side while his literal demon was the “all powerful demon king” was honestly the low point of the series, helmed by the same director that revived the series with its narrative peak.

IMO, i think the remakes of DMC should start with DMC3, not only because of it's giant success, but also it will build some sort of saga about Crazy Pizza Guy. We will see how El Donte started his journey, then publish remake of the original DMC, with rebuild mechanics and a little fix of the game plot, for example fix the subplot with Vergil, make Dante more emotional with return of his brother, make him more furious towards Mundus. And then total rebuild of DMC 2. It's a decent game, but being decent is not the style of DMC series. And then stop. Because 4 and 5 don't need remake, their graphics and mechanics are in good shape even today.

I really gotta ask, what's the point? It seems your main argument is that "it doesn't hold up compared to games released nowadays". If this is the criteria for the necessity of a remake, what game that released over 20 years ago DOESN'T qualify for a remake? It seems like a colossal waste of time and resources when they could instead be spent on a new entry. It also just feels disrespectful to everything DMC1 achieved by saying "yeah it's got some flaws and rough edges, let's just scrap it and do it all over again".
Also, that comment you made towards the end "in my perfect world they'd remake all the games prior to 5", like bro, where does it end? Does a game being not perfect mean we need to constantly redo them? What about 10-20 years from now when the genre has evolved and DMC5 is outdated? Do we remake that game as well? Or can we respect the fact that all art is flawed and products of their time and that's ok?
Sorry if this comes across mean spirited haha, it just baffles me that people will advocate to remake games that are perfectly fine and are still excellent (and this isn't nostalgia talking, I only got into this series 3 years ago lol)

I think having 2 remake as the next game sounds the most reasonable. Itsuno actually wanted to pass down dmc after he finished 3, but because of all the things that happenned, it forced him to stay in the series until 5. And it's probably the safest idea for the new team to do the remake of 2, because you can only goes up from there. The talent required to actually remaking that game and made it worse is beyond genius level. Having Itsuno as a superviser to train them for the next dmc game is not a bad idea.

  • @DestinySpider

Please fucking no, bro. Enough with the remakes already.
Just make a new DMC game.
I especially don't get when people want a 2 remake. All remaking the games does is constrain what they can do to the blueprint of the original essentially.
And what the hell would one gain by trying to "remake 2 to be good"?
There's nothing worth salvaging in that game.
If people really like Lucia so much because her DT looks cool, then just put her in a new game and leave 2 to rot.
It is tempting seeing Malet Island with modern visuals, but they could just as well do that as a singular Vergil flashback mission in a new title instead.
And everything 3 needs is just porting styleswitcher and full loadout into every version. (Maybe fixing accidental reversals)
No need to waste years of work rethreading old ground and trying to stomp out their originals when they're great as is.
And even if they weren't I don't really understand it, as with that example of DMC2

As a massive gothic horror fan, and general old game enthusiast, DMC1 is probably my favorite game despite its immense datedness and Jank and I think a modern uphaul of the same concept would do wonders. I will say though, I do actually love the Nightmare Boss Fights, I just think that it suffers from the fixed camera angles and unrefined movement that plagues most of this game a bit harder than most of the other bosses, Griffon 2 aside. Also you didn’t bring it up, but one thing I think can be firmly removed entirely besides the Mundus shmup segment are the underwater levels…

A remake would need to keep the slower more methodical combat though IMO. Make it less janky, more fun to control, but the only reason something like the Grenade Launcher works (or even Ifrit as it stands, even if it definitely inspired Beowulf/any gauntlet in future DMCs). I feel like something a bit like DMC3, minus the styles (maybe use a Nero-inspired control scheme, especially for Aerial Rave or the likes), and pulling the brakes on the "fast paced" elements but still a bit faster than vanilla DMC1 would be ideal. And more importantly it needs to retain its horror elements. Its ambiance sets it apart and is probably one of the big reasons so many rank it above DMC4 (I do know it was not the case in this video, I'm aware it's a divide, I'm just stating why, IMO, some rank it above DMC4).

How about we just get a new DMC game and leave the past behind? I am so sick of these remakes, and even if they add significant gameplay additions like you suggest in this video: the story would still be the same and it would lack all the things DMC 5 had. Like Nero, V, and Dante, who all had their own unique combat styles. Remaking 1 would limit us to just Dante again and no matter how much you spice him up there will be a disconnect between that Dante in the remake versus dante in 5, which is supposedly further down the timeline. Then the rest of the franchise would need remakes and I don't know how i feel about that. Honestly, we should keep pushing forward with NEW Devil may Cry games, rather than return to the origins to give it a facelife. Cuz then people will want it for 2, 3, 4, and eventually 5 as the years go on. (It'll be decades from now when 5 will be outdated...) But it will happen regardless.
I vote Devil may Cry 6 with Nero & Dante recieving more fleshed out movesets, as well as an entirely new swordbearing character. (Perhaps Nero should have a son with Kyrie and he's also a demonhybrid and can hunt devils. Perhaps Dante give's him Alastor or something, idk. Perhaps Electricity should be the new character's theme)

As for all the people saying that DMC2 needs to be remade more, I would argue that DMC2 needs an entire reimagining to be a completely different game, not a remake. What better basis for a DMC2 reimagining than a DMC1 remake?

I think a lot of his slights against the game come from a lack of understanding about it's core mechanics, but _oh fuck is he right about the line delivery._ Honestly just letting Reuben Langdon rerecord every line alone would fix a ton of issues.
I will contest his vision of a remake though. I don't think the game should add any devil arms. Instead I'd flesh out either Alastor or Sparda and give you a reason to use one over the other, and if you really do want to add one more Devil Arm, have Nightmare be one instead of a gun, and then let us use the needle gun out of water. A ranged based Devil Arm sounds fun. From there you can just bring in Styles, touch up Bosses to accomodate, and then it'd be fine.
Also he's clearly never played a Kamiya game before, dude always adds a Star Fox level.
3 doesn't need a remake either. Update Vergil's kit to include some of his stuff from later titles, and then just port everything from the Switch version. Boom, perfect game. As for 4, it was a rush job. Just go back and finish the game. Then it's be good. 2 absolutely _needs_ the remake though. Not only does it fundamentally not understand what its a sequel to in the slightest, but also 5 retconning the timeline made it so 2 is a giant plot hole now that its not the final game in the series. Dude has Sin Devil Trigger before 4 cause of that. Just rebuild it from the ground up, and then salvage what you can from the old systems (including customizeable DT) to use as the foundation for Lucia.

Wanna start off by saying I appreciate you adding to the conversation and not just saying I suck = opinion bad. That said, not sure what you mean by not understanding the core mechanics, the only times I died were to nightmare and Mundus. That aside though, I have beat Bayonetta and I didn't find the star fox segment in that game to be nearly as aggravating.
Something I wish I had made more clear in the video in hindsight was the fact that I really don't want a "Remake" of 3, I really just want a graphical upgrade for the game with the on the fly style switching from the switch port. 3 is my favorite game in the series (and one of my favorite games of all time) and I would want very little about the game changed besides the visuals being brought up to todays standards.
Besides that though I agree with the rest of what you said.

    • @DyxoXinoro
      @DyxoXinoro 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@DrekonV Ah, I misunderstood your issues with one. I heard you talk about your problems with the game's boss design while watching you fight Phantom and read too much into it. Yeah, Nightmare is... well, its _very_ fitting that its referred to as a demonic experiment in universe lmao. DMC1 does have a lot more going for it than I think most people realize (for example, using High Time to parry projectiles, or using L3 to switch between Alastor and Ifrit), but it does a poor job explaining them. For example, with Nightmare the different orbs on its body have independant durability that carries over between fights, so you can dramatically speed up Nightmare 3 by micromanaging how you strike its weak points. But to my knowledge this is just not explained anywhere in the game. Now I wouldn't want a remake to spell that detail out, necessarily, but since lock on doubles as a health indicator from 3 onward you could use that to reinforce how Nightmare's orbs work.
Assuming they don't just completely convert it to how DMCV depicts Nightmare, which I would have zero qualms with. Let the first Nightmate be the weird grey goo laser cannon, while the other two are the strange deamontech golem would probably be for the best. Also fix Griffon 2 so its not a prototype of the helicopter from DMC2 while you're at it, thanks Capcom.
That said, I do feel like the flight segment for Mundus is important. Its a great way to symbolize how Dante's power is tied to his emotional state, and temporarily powering up to Sparda's level due to how fucking pissed he was is a fantastic moment. It definitely could be improved, I did see what you meant about the lasers blending into the background, but I think removing it outright would devalue his interactions with Mundus. And the only other alternative I see is having it replaced with a boss fight where Dante is just in free flight for a while, which risks cycling back to the "just air raid everything" issue or making it a DMC4 boss and everything that comes with.
A graphical update for the switch version of 3 would be sick as hell, though, I'll give you that. I'd love to see how gross they could make Arkham in 4K.

@@DyxoXinoro honestly I wouldn’t have a problem with the “Star Fox” segment staying in the game with a remake… I just don’t want it to be so bad lol. Give me an actual reticle, and either lower the projectile spam or make them more visible and predictable and I’d be happy.
Also I did not know about that weird quirk with the nightmare fights, never even felt like I was missing something during the fight, so yeah I’d say it was kinda poorly indicated lol.

@@DrekonV How would you feel if the Star Fox segment added the ability to use the lock on system so you can "fix" a reticle on one target while moving around, changed up the projectile colors so that they are more visible, and added a dash/dodge button that grants a few s while zipping across the screen? Cause thats how I would want it to be altered in a remake.

as much as i love nelo angel i have to admit that i absolutely hate him in dante must die.
it's frustrating to replay an entire mission only to get combo'ed by him
if they added replayable missions and Checkpoints before bosses i'd be a happy man

Itsuno has too much respect for Kamiya to drastically change DMC 1 I would think and also the game still holds up. Remake DMC 2 instead.

I respect your opinion, but this ain’t it chief. This game is great as hell. DMC1 has aged alright in some aspects, but has aged incredibly in others. It is a very tightly designed game with excellent pacing and hard as nails gameplay. I don’t know it sounds pretentious for me to say “you don’t get”, but you might not get it. Great vid though.

They could literally just re-do the games in DMC5's graphical style and just redo the same themes and I'd buy all of them

@@Eliam_Kazama The game isn't great but it's not bad, if anything it's just easy. Enemies ascending when shooting at them is funny. I like the story and Lucia. But would I recommend it? Probably not, There are better options. But I will say give it at least a try.
