I still remember the way my heart sank when I realised "He will knock four times" wasn't referring to The Master... And The Doctor going back to see all of his companions once last time with this face before the end... truly heart breaking. I've also never not been broken by "...if you were my dad."
Eccleston and Tennant's time on the show may be my personal favourite, but the adventure of a lifetime is still far from over. As Ood Sigma says "This song is ending, but the story never ends." You have some genuinely cracking things to look forward to, and what can I say to that but "Fantastic" or "Allons-y!" or perhaps, as our new Doctor said at the end there "Geronimooooo!"
I'll leave you with the lyrics to "Vale Decem," the final song given by the Ood to The Tenth Doctor, in the original Latin along with an English translation:
    Vale decem (Farewell Ten),
    Ad aeternam (On to Eternity),
Di meliora (The fates be with you),
    Ad aeternam (On to Eternity),
    Vale decem (Farewell Ten),
Di meliora (The fates be with you),
    Beati (Oh blessed be),
Pacifici (He who brought us peace),
    Vale decem (Farewell Ten),
Alis grave (Lay down your burden),
Ad perpetuam (We will remember you),
    Memoriam (Forever more),
    Vale decem (Farewell Ten),
Gratis tibi ago (We give you thanks),
    Ad aeternam (On to Eternity),
Numquam singularis (You are not alone),
    Numquam (Never),
Dum spiro fido (Trust to the last),
    Vale (Farewell),
    Vale (Farewell),
    Vale (Farewell),
    Vale (Farewell),
    Vale (Farewell),

Hi Jules, if memory serves the older woman who appears to Wilf and at the end (covering her face like a Weeping Angel) was originally supposed to be the Doctor's mother in the script but was ultimately removed so that fans could make up their own minds about it.
At the very end when Wilf asks the Doctor who she was, he looks at Sylvia and then to Donna, to mother and then child, which helps settle for me that it was indeed the Doctor's mother we got to see.

When I first watched this episode, it was Ten’s last scene that brought me to tears, obviously.
Now, it’s Sarah Jane’s. Unbeknownst to anyone, that was going to be her final scene in Doctor Who, and it’s so simple but also so powerful at the same time. She just looks at him, fills with glee and smiles… but with a bittersweet undertone that says she knows this will be their final meeting. The Time Lords used to be good people, before Rassilon became The Lord High President. He was the perfect leader for a war, and he did help turn the tide. But he was not the sort of leader who was good in peace time, nor the sort to give up his power. Under his rulership, the Time Lord's became as feared as the Daleks.
It was also theorised that the reason the Doctor's regeneration was so explosive was because the massive dosage of radiation destabilised his DNA.

    • @ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502

Uh, have you watched the classic show at all? The timelords were nearly always portrayed as either a nuisance at best or downright antagonistic at worst.
The Doctor has a whole speech about how the monsters he's fought are nothing compared to the evil the timelords are capable of, and that's long before rassilon returned.

@@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502I don’t think they were ever outright villains, but they were portrayed as pompous, vain, arrogant and out of touch with the rest of the universe, lording it over creation. It was a stifling and sterile environment, which is what drew the Doctor to travelling in the first place.
Certainly dangerous with the power they wielded but mostly they used that power to be self-righteous windbags and they didn’t become active villains until this episode.

I always noticed how each regeneration seems to become more and more unstable every time, with the amount of pure energy that is expelled from the Doctor's body. And every time, the Tardis console room has changed. I think this is probably because there is too much damage each time to keep it, so it is 'archived' in the Tardis data banks.

The moment with Tennant in agony inside the box is probably my favourite scene in the entire show - the acting, the music, the context and writing, it’s all perfect. The Doctor, a godlike being who has survived encounters with the most dangerous beings in the universe, wants nothing more than to live - and he can’t, because he’s facing the one person who can stop the Doctor - a pure, innocent civilian who also deserves to live, and whom only the Doctor can save. As such, this incomprehensible man who knows more than almost anything else alive, and can get out of even the most dangerous of situations alive, makes the ultimate sacrifice; alone, afraid and in pain in an empty room, in the universal equivalent of the middle of nowhere. The only man who will ever know about this sacrifice can’t even tell the others he’s doing it for. Then, he dies. No sudden twist to save him, no magic cure, and he doesn’t even get that bittersweet company of a companion. Above all, he truly, genuinely doesn’t want to go. Truly powerful and unique. Prime Doctor Who right there.

Your reaction to Wilf knocking is all of us. EVERYONE was so shocked by it, it was heartbreaking. But Wilf is worth it. Wilf is incredible, and kind, and so, so sweet. Him and the Doctor talking is SUCH a lovely part of it, everything about Wilf being his dad, how they'd both be honoured, it makes me cry everytime. And the Doctor truly is honoured to be able to save him.
The fact that after that whole adventure, going through all that, he survives, and then it's his love that kills him. It's just so fitting.
The look Martha and Sarah Jane both give the Doctor. The same look. They just know. It's such a beautiful sequence, him visiting them all, but they can tell it's goodbye, and it breaks their hearts right along with ours.
We're about to have a new showrunner, new doctor, new companion, new everything, so this was done as a sort of 'rounding off' of RTD's time running the show. Obviously it's the same show, same timeline, it's not like this is all being cast aside or forgotten, but this is the end of RTD's big plan, his grand scheme of connected characters and shows and linking everything together, and he knows the new showrunner has plans of his own, so this is kind of a 'last hurrah' of checking in on certain people from this era, just in case we don't see them again.

We think he's escaped the prophesy . . . and then the simple, ordinary knock comes in sets of 4, and we know. And we know that the Doctor knows, too, because even though he rails against the situation and even though he does have a choice, it's a choice he made the instant he heard the knock and understood; it was not possible for him to make any other. It absolutely gutted me -- and still brings me to tears rewatching it.

There's so much happening in this episode that I think there's one part that gets overlooked. The beginning when he tells The Master it would be his honor to travel the Universe with him. It's the only time in the entire show when The Doctor admits someone is superior to him and their knowledge and understanding of existence is greater than his. He genuinely wants to travel with The Master because he knows he could learn so much that he'll otherwise never understand.

This is such a sad moment for me in Doctor Who. It's an end of an incredible era with Russell T Davies. It's the end of my favorite Doctor. It's much more than just a new Doctor, it's the end of something incredible. When I first watched Doctor Who, I was introduced to it from my cousin. Shortly after that, I was in a really bad state in my life. I stayed in my room and didn't really leave for weeks at a time. I binged watched Doctor Who for all that time. I would wake up, watch Doctor Who, and then go to bed pretty much. Watching the incredible stories of the Doctor and his companions really helped me out a lot. Seeing Rose want more for her life than the mundane filled me with so much hope even though I knew I would never live such an interesting life as her of course. This era of Doctor Who will always and forever be an important part of my life and who I am. This finale still makes me sad even after all this time, even after seeing it so many times. Being sad though means that you care. It means that the stories and the characters all impacted you in a meaningful way. I will never trade that for anything. It's okay to be sad.
Thank you so much Jules for these videos. It may seem overly dramatic, but it's been such a joy watching these again with you. I'm excited to see you start on the next episode in a whole new journey with the next Doctor.

    Hey there, Jules.
I know this is difficult now, saying goodbye to the Doctor, perhaps even YOUR Doctor. Having been a fan of the show since 1978, I know how it feels. Saying goodbye to Four (Tom Baker) was very hard for me as a kid. I tend to be a bit skeptical of new Doctors, and had been skeptical of Tennant as well, though he won me over pretty quickly. And even though I was ready for Tennant to depart after the events of "The Waters of Mars", I wasn't sold on Matt Smith when his casting was announced.
But let me tell you that before "The Eleventh Hour" had even wrapped, Matt Smith had totally won my heart as Eleven, who went on to become my most beloved Doctor of the revived show for the longest time. I think you're going to love him, because perhaps more than anyone else since Tom Baker, Smith just seemed like he absolutely WAS the Doctor, and was absolutely born to play the part of a very old man in the body of a very young one.
But for now, by all means mourn the loss of Ten a bit before you buckle up for your next journey in the TARDIS. I absolutely cannot wait to see your reaction to "The Eleventh Hour," and I'm almost certainly going to watch the full-length version to boot. Until then, be well!

This is just...the most crushing thing i had to watch. Ever. In my life. It gets me every time. The acting is just perfect. The writing is top score. And the music on top of all that is just destroying... The saddest "good bye" in the history of TV shows. The true meaning for the 4-knock-end was just terrifying to reveal. It just shows how much the character of the Doctor lives up to its name. Knowing that Wilf could die if he's left in there, and knowing that he himself can just get though it and regenerate, just shows the essence of the Doctor: that he's willing to sacrifice himself just for one person. Even if he regenerates, he loses his self to another future self. He gets replaced. I will continue to cry to this episode till the end of time.

And once again, the cycle completes and we lose another Doctor, breaking our hearts, but as with every loss, we get introduced to a new one, and rest assure, I am sure that in time the floppy haired overgrown child that is the 11th Doctor will worm his way into your heart, and then shatter it all over again when his time comes and the clock strikes 12.
Also, a fun little thing, the Doctor visiting his past companions was a lot longer than what we see on the screen, according to something the 11th Doctor says later, he went back to see _all_ his companions, every single one. Additionally, there is, or at least was a companion magazine, Doctor Who Adventures, which had a comic in it, and during this year, the Doctor had two original companions to replace Donna after her departure (one of whom was a descendent from 2nd Doctor Companion Jaime McCrimon) and in the last issue before series 5 started, the comic was a catchup with them, ending with the reveal that this is their stop on the Doctor's tour down memory lane.

I forgot to mention on your previous episode that if the first part made you cry that much, this one I expected there would be a torrent of tears… yeah. It was a long send off though, lots of solo episodes to say goodbye to David and this incarnation of the Doctor. It’s probably been said, but that “I don’t want to go” was equal parts from David as it was the character, he absolutely loves this role. The prolonged goodbye should have been something we got with Christopher, but the sourness of certain real world events caused a split between him and people at the BBC and some who worked this show behind and in front of the camera. Certain things went on that should have been addressed, but as much as it was not that long ago, it was still a time where certain things went unpunished or at least not taken care of as well as they should be and that’s how things went and sometimes unfortunately still go in this industry.
As for specifics, you can look it into yourself if you wish, but sometimes some watchers just want to it know, they don’t want to ruin certain characters. I don’t think it does, but I understand how it can rob some people of joy in watching something so it’s not for me to do that.
Anyway, that’s not where I intended to go with my comment, more so a lament over what Christopher could have had with his departure. I love David’s acting as Ten, but it just makes me sad Chris didn’t have time to explore as long as David did with his character, so this ending for Ten makes me bittersweet over 9’s ending too. Collectively it’s nice though, because I think David intentionally borrowed some mannerisms from Chris’ portrayal, especially early on and then made some of himself, that’s the awesome thing about this character, which each new actor colours in a little more of the personality and history of the Doctor and they all make it a little better in some way, some larger than others, and David by far left the largest mark on the modern Doctor. Can’t wait to what you think of 11 though, he has some fantastic moments and jumps boldly into things and has some really wonderful moments. As do some certain new people coming along… it’ll be great to see!

"The "I think you look like giants" conversation between Wilf and the Doctor just kills me especially when he keeps on refusing to take the gun up until the moment that he does. This was definitely a two tissue episode, Jules - so much emotion in the story between Wilf, Donna, Donna's mum, The Master (yes, you can feel sorry for him even as you think he's a monster), the Time Lords and not forgetting the song of the Oods. The Doctor's valedictory visit to his friends is a real lump in the throat moment and of course he doesn't want to go, but go he must because change is a-coming. It's good change, honest, but that doesn't make it any easier. Thanks as always for your open, emotional, honest reactions, Juliette. Hello, Jules.💜
Again, not a lot to say about this, even the radical switch from the deep, crushing sorrow of the end of 10, and the comical beginning of 11, for that is, for all intents and purposes a Future Episode, which puts it smack dab in your No Spoilers Please category. Are episodes? Is the writing, Is He? Good, bad, horrible, best ever, up and down? I'll do what you have always requested - talk about all that - as the episodes appear on the channel.
There were many yanks on the heartstrings here, and almost every one of the best of them, revolved around Wilfred. The man who can make you tear up, with only a smile.🥲🥲
Donna - Did I miss something, Again!!?! A last shot of classic Donna!🤣And what the Doctor and Wilfred said aside, it was really nice to see Sylvia smile - she looks wonderful when she smiles, and as caustic as she can be, Donna was her first thought when she recovered from being a Master clone.
Much whingeing here about the Doctors bitterness, at 17:37, and his hurtful comments, as well as his talk of dying, not regeneration. But I think, and this is me speaking only for me, have always thought these bits are exactly in line with the entire 10's tenure as the Doctor. It has been a very calculated slow burn, as he became more and more impressed with his cleverness, his self-importance, with almost every episode. He tried to fight it, now and again, but he knew the truth of it, as we saw very pointedly in Waters of Mars and this 2 parter. Even though his last words were - "I don't want to go!" - he knew it himself - "Ohh lived too long" And, the Ood seemed to bolster that idea as well with the seeming admonishment - "This song is ending, but the story never ends."🤔
After all was said and done, still knowing something was going to happen - the Wilfred twist... It hits hard with every viewing. A masterful twist, which they foretold in part 1, as the Doctor and Wilfred chatted. Still a powerful blow.🫢
And what Russell Davies actually said, about the mystery woman was that originally she was intended to be the Doctor's mother, but they intentionally left it ambiguous - for viewers to decide on their own who she was, whilst listing a few possibilities.
The catching up was great - I always love seeing Sarah Jane Smith, I've loved her forever, and the beautiful Rose smile - for all my complaining about her character was wonderful, Jack with the hero of the Titanic, and Wilfred... my favorite character in the entire span of the 10th Doctor.🥰
Jules,🤗💜 I hope you are having a Fantastic day, as the week winds down. I look forward to joining you in the next series - whenever you begin putting it out on the channel. Until then, treat yourself. Have a fancy coffee, take a walk, and breathe easy for a bit. You deserve it after this stretch of Doctor Who. 😅
And, again, Thank You for all the hard work you put in making these video reactions - They, and you, are very appreciated.🤗💜😊

Oh, Tom 💜 what a wonderful episode this was, and it was just perfect to read your thoughts about it. I'm so glad you enjoyed it as much as I did, though I'm not surprised about that as we do share very similar thoughts, often! This episode had everything we could have wished for (other than our Tenth Doctor not leaving...)
What does surprise me is reading through some of the comments and seeing some say they didn't like how they did the regeneration. I guess each to their own, but I really thought it was simply wonderful.
How heartbreaking for it to be WILF that was knocking.... That completely took me by surprise, and I'm SO thankful it wasn't spoiled. The comment moderators are few, but they are mighty 🥰 and worth their weight in gold.
I will be starting straight away into the next Who series without a break, though I am managing okay. Thank you, Tom 💜 With me being ahead with the X Files until the end of the season, it's really helped me keep on top of things with having one less thing to do per week. It's been so much better for me just with the 3 shows per week, honestly. I've even GONE FOR A WALK a few times 😱 It took me 7 months, but we got there 🤣
      Thank you, Dear Tom 🥰💜

Jules, one more thought about the regeneration - well the traveling around to visit complaints - I think he was holding off his regeneration, and part of that was his silence for the first many visits. He was using all his remaining strength to keep from exploding, and as he got closer to the point of no return he spoke more - and of course it was to Sylvia, Wilfred, and Rose.
      A well thought out tale.

    • @julesreacts
      @julesreacts  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yes, I absolutely think so, too! His silence doesn't bother me and I understand, especially when you put it the way you have. It also added to the emotions of what was happening as well 😥 He spoke to Rose, and that must have been his last remaining strength... 😭

I think the ending of this episode still makes me cry more than any other DW episode. I know how sad you’re feeling, but I think you’ll warm up to the new Doctor in no time. In my opinion, next season is when DW gets really good! The stories, the writing, the plot twists. I love Tennant’s Doctor, but Matt Smith will always be my favorite.

Elisabeth Sladen's knowing look is usually what gets me. She has experienced a doctor regeneration as a companion, so for her to recognize the look in his eyes and her watery welling up in hers, and my own tear floodgates open.

This is one of the hardest episodes, and yet one of my favorite, David to me will always be my favorite Doctor, though the next Doctor does come in a very, very close second. this episode has another of the five greatest Doctor speeches in it, but more importantly, it has the best moment of any Doctor episode because David was so beloved by the fans and Crew, that he was given a reward that no other Doctor ever got, he got to say fare well to all his companions and friends before regenerating. I know it's sad, and a new Doctor will be hard to get used to, but, wellllllll........

    • @julesreacts
      @julesreacts  หลายเดือนก่อน

Charlie 👋💜 I will absolutely miss David's "wellllll's" but that's what I have you for now 🤭 that's you're new role, whether you chose to accept it or not!
I've seen a few episodes now with 11 and I'm definitely warming up to him. So I'm hopeful 💜

The lady was supposed to be the doctor’s mum, but the writer revised the script to make it implied rather than directly told. When asked who she was, the doctor nodded at Sylvia to imply “mum”. I tell ya the tone shift between doctors can give you whiplash. That’s because David’s exit was the last of Russell Davies script and the new doctor was Steven Moffats script.

Ohhhh probably wont see this but been on a re watch reaction run today and wanted to add when they said Geoffrey Noble. Fun fact but one he appeared in the special where Donna first appeard and 2 there is a deleted scene for series 4 episode 1 with Geoffrey noble because originally Geoffrey noble was to do the stuff Wilfred Mott ended up doing but after the actors death they changed Wilfs character to fit in with the Nobles.

What really makes the last scenes sad is that all of the companions he visited (except Rose, who didn't even know him yet) realized immediately that he was making his farewell tour, saying his goodbyes. 😢

Your reaction to the new doctor was the exact same as all of us. So much emotion saying goodbye to someone we loved so much, you just don’t have the emotional capacity to love this new guy yet. But like 9-10, you carry on and before you know it he’s The Doctor you know and love. There’s certainly plenty to look forward to!

this episode always gets me that scene with Wilf and the doctor on the ship is fantastic. I also love the scene between the master and the doctor I always saw the noise in the masters head as symmetry to the doctors trauma all the screams he'd hear this especially hits with the "I don't know what id be without that noise". Finally the moment at the wedding the doctor giving donna one last gift from her father as he couldn't himself and that gift being a winning ticket making sure she is taken care of so poetic.

I remember this as it was airing at the time. David Tennant was EVERYWHERE on the BBC that Christmas, in idents, guesting on other shows (Such as QI and hosting a Doctor Who-themed edition of "Never Mind the Buzzcocks" with Catherine Tate and Bernard Cribbins also as guests, which was hilarious), it was a massive deal.
The episodes were a great send-off to the 10th Doctor, but also the true end of an era, as along with Tennant leaving the show, Russell T Davies also stepped down as showrunner (Until his return last year), with Series 5 not just marking the debut of Matt Smith, but the beginning of Steven Moffatt's run in charge (he was already a writer on the show, "Blink" being his most iconic episode).
Give Smith a chance. I know you were invested in the 10th Doctor, we all were back then, but once he's settled in after that first episode, he will win you over, hopefully.
And if you're still mourning 10, You have the 50th Anniversary "The Day of the Doctor" to look forward to!
