      Were you there? Just wonderin. Van Halen first big show..78. I don't think we stayed for any of Sabbath's set..not after what we had just witnessed. Whole fkn crowd yelling for encore, they played Really got me again, with a whole different solo, and we're still screaming. Rumour has it bully Iommi tried for a punch -up with the VanHalens...as if!

      @@robbycates7421 oh, that's fact, brother. Just when I was really getting into them, prolly even tried to buy a copy of Street Survivors. Alas, in my smallish town, they were quickly sold out...rich kids, ya know? 1977 had some to offer, but disco would be selling out the rest of the decade...

    That's my favorite Skynryd live set of songs! What an awesome line up of musicians... all of them. Gary, Allen, Steve, Billy, Artemis and Ronnie! Fucking bad asses. No funking costumes, dancing, nothing. 1976 kick ass music!

      Deborah, like Ronnie said in "Gimme Three Steps," "I said excuse me"..... how did I forget Leon! He was great too. What a great band, still is, but I like the old 70's Skynyrd stuff so much....

  • @JokersWild70
    @JokersWild70 7 ปีที่แล้ว +81

    One thing that a lot of people dont know, and I've read just about all of the Skynyrd books out there, watched a bunch of interviews, etc. was that Steve Gaines, besides being extremely talented, really was a shot in the arm to Gary and Allen, who were kind of burned out. They'd been at the grind for a while, and along comes Steve, very hungry from playing clubs for so long, and was allowed major input into "Street Survivors", it really revived Gary and Allen's playing again.

    • @zublacus
      @zublacus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That's true. They called the tour before Steve joined, the "Hell Tour". Cassie kept telling my "brother was really good on guitar" and they had known of him, but not how good he really was till they gave him a shot. Shortly before Street Survivors came out, Ronnie who had allowed Steve to sing lead vocals on the album had said....One day this band will be his. He was that much of a game changer to this band. RIP Steve.....we know how awesome you were!

      @Yeah But no doubt about it. Check out some of Steve’s old band Crawdad. There’s quite a few videos. Cover tunes, originals, Steve could play and sing absolutely anything. And if you can believe it, his playing on those may be even better than what he brought to Street Survivors

      This performance illustrates that. Blue Yodel at this event has to be the best live rock performance of all time.
      And I am NOT exaggerating. How did you guys keep it so tight that day? I say it all started with the rhythm section.

Everything was in the cards for this band to come together like they did, but sadly we know the bad that also came. The video and audio quality on this is awesome. Thanks for sharing. I hope and Pray that youngsters today listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd and dream about picking up a guitar or other instrument. The talent these guys had is becoming pretty rare. Amazing to me the sound that they created and they didn't copy it from anyone either! Nowadays you just click youtube and see pretty much any Artist, or surf the Net for ideas, not to mention the guitar technology we have today! These guys did NOT have the luxuries we have today at their fingertips and still created a kick-ass sound. I'm 46 and was a kid when the crash took Ronnie, Steve,Cassie & Dean. My older brothers had been raising me on Skynyrd music. My oldest brother had just bought "Street Survivors" and I loved the Album,(mine has the flames on the cover), and still own it today along with all the rest of my Albums from the 1970's. That tragedy took the lives of these talented folks but Skynyrd Music will never die and I hope it continues to inspire young musicians everywhere.

    Gaines makes that Strat sing, Collins on that Explorer - amazing - Rossington rocks the Les Paul like nobody else..Ronnie's intensity and anger are unmistakable...Artimus is a beast with Powell and Leon rock-solid ...how many thousands of times have these guys played these songs together to be not only that tight, but arrive at those tones, while still listening to each other and...it's Rock poetry ( or southern Rock poetry)...

    I get chicken skin, my hair stands on end and cold chills run up and down my spine every time I've had a couple of beers and automatically gravitate to this live show. It draws me like a magnet... irresistible . The greatest show on earth. Usually I listen to a lot of their albums with no visual but the album cover to build myself up to this greatest performance I've ever seen. Greatest live band to ever step foot on stage... or in a studio... or in a dive

    The bad blood is between Gary and Artimus. The band that plays now isn't a fraction of what they were. Gary is just riding what Ronnie and Allen and he started and shouldn't even be playing under the Lynyrd Skynyrd name. Ronnie Van Zant is Lynyrd Skynyrd. I saw them In 77 with Ted Nugent. Totally will never forget these guys. Absolute Best!!!! Listen to them everyday!!!!

      Artemis was the backbone of the band, not arguing with you there. I do so love Gary's piano playing, but Ronnie made singing lead for Skynyrd look easy and for him it was. There was no replacement for RVZ and I wish I could have heard Ronnie live just once.

      Artimus Pyle - you have ALOT of fans out there, from all over the country, and the world.
      You meant much more to that band than most fans know, including current members touring under a pseudo Lynyrd Skynyrd name. Thanks for your service in the USMC - and your contributions to one of the greatest bands of ALL time will never be forgotten here in Wisconsin.

      There was no bad blood between Artimus and Ed, they actually jammed together in the later years. Right before Ed passed.
      *And just for the record "Working for MCA" was an Ed King contribution to the band. (Amongst a half dozen other major hits).

      I met Artimus either 88'' or 89' at one of their after the crash 'Tribute' shows at Alpine Valley Music Theater in WI. while hanging around outside the back stage gate. He was coming back from a walk around the golf course when I recognized him and asked him for an autograph. At the time I was in a Skynyrd tribute band and brought a poster for him to sign. He was very gracious as we talked for a few minutes before he had to go.

    I love this song while Steve Gains plays that guitar of his so well it is like his guitar is speaking to you.
