@srsupa I absolutely agree. I played Ultima 5, 7 and 8 and 8 was my favorite, especially looking back. The characters in the earlier games were just a little fruity and weird. Having Gwenno, Shamino and Iolo was great because it felt like a traditional D&D game, but Ultima 8 was so epic in it's scope and story. It was just more of a dark and deeper game, and yes, the graphics and speech pack were awesome.
Thank you! I've been trying to remember this game for years. Glad I finally found and get to watch it. This intro really stood out to me and seeing it now brings back my childhood. Thanks for uploading this video!
What a classic. I played Ultima VI mainly but also remember playing this one now that I see the video. Many thanks. No matter how good graphics get, these old games will continue to live on in our memories as some of the best because they are partly a product of our imagination which realism can never touch.
I couldn't agree more. I felt exactly the same while playing it. Which proves that its a very successful game. Such a classic in every aspect, I can't believe they managed to create such a great and good looking game in huge technical limits of that time (CPU speed, rams, etc.)
@srsupa dude, your story just perfectly matches with my own. It's funny how you can find people with identical experience these days just browsing through youtube pages finding these fragments of your life which meant a lot for you when you were a kid and make you want to cry after you grow up. Just amazing. Well it was nice meeting you, fragmentary soul mate.
This is the only Ultima game I've ever played and I love it (I tried to play Ultima 7 but I didn't like the graphics at all), I played U8 when I was like 13 (I'm 25 now) and I remember I was so amazed by this game... I mean just the idea of falling into a new strange world... alone, without any clue of what to do... that was so aweso and new for a videogame at that time. The atmosphere in this game is perfectly well done. I wish some game company does a remake of this game that would be so cool!
so true, ive gone back to this game every 5 or so years for the last decade and a half, my current playthrough ive actually got somewhere in the story, not bad for 15 years of wondering what to do :P
U8 was the first ultima i played. think i was 13 at the time? anyways, just watching this gives me crazy nostalgia. the graphics dont put me off AT ALL watching this video. you can just feel that ULTIMA atmosphere oozing from this game. the following years i went on to play Black Gate and Serpent Isle along with both expansions. The best rpg series of all time. Period.
First RPG I ever played and made me a huge fan of the Ultima series. Surprisingly, many Ultima fans did not like Pagan. I thought it was the best from the series.
You just perfectly stated my own feelings on this. I used to daydream about doing my own remake of this game--expanding upon the culture and geography of the island, including additional dangers and puzzles. Most of all, I'd want to recapture and enhance the feeling of danger and looming tension of the game's atmosphere. Truly, this game is an unforgettable masterpiece. I'm glad to know other people think so too!
@davidcarterdavidcart Yes, you're absolutely right. Few games have any kind of atmosphere these days. Lots of good new games but I never get immersed in them. One exception is Dragon Age: Origins. But wish there were more.
Played what, U8? Ofcourse I have been playing it for years. And if you are talking about U7 I played that too. It was nice but ı never got used to the wierd perspective and some technical issues and walking animations of U7 characters.
Sigh, I had this game as a kid, but only played the first 3 seconds... then it would crash... I tried so hard to get it to work... the general look and feel of those first 3 seconds was needless to say... extremely satisfying.
Go to GOG, they have the game along with Ultima's 1-7,Underworld 1+2, and Worlds of Ultima 1+2(those two are free) all set up to run under Dosbox which is included with the games. Plus the GOG version is the patched CD rom version which fixes for the most part the awful platforming sections of the game and other bugs. Sadly no Lost Vale expansion since EA seems to lost the master disk years ago
I was going to give UOPagan a shot as I thought it was a client that had Pagan graphics. I haven't been able to connect to it.. really want to though if the client is Pagan like. UO Gamers Hybrid is just another bomb throwing server. I am waiting for Inporylem 3 to come out. That and the zombie apocalypse server was fun too. Really like how they made purple potions almost useless on IPY as well, hoping they stay the course.
A true classic. They really don't make games like this anymore. I guess one of the closest modern game to Ultima: Pagan is Diablo 2. And comparing the places and size of two games, Diablo 2 isn't even half large of Ultima: Pagan's world.
Actually I don't agree that Ultima: Pagan is a rushed game. Interesting I think completely the opposite. Such a huge, complex and good looking (compared to its developed year ofcourse) game can't possibly be made in rush or in a short time. Ultima: Pagan is by far a better game than Diablo series besides I really enjoy Diablo 2 and it's mood. But Ultima: Pagan is one of those game that one can see once in a life time. By the way I began the game (again) hopefully to complete it this time :)
I remember a door i could never open but i wanted to see the room beyond it so badly. And i tried to cast a golem to kill Darion the arms master. Good time.
bruce lee Depending the door it may have had nothing behind it (intended to be used in the cancelled expansion). Funny enough, if it was that door, a golem could have opened it for you, but again nothing on the other side.
gog.com get their version, final patched and its simple installer, meaning if you dont know how to use dos very well itll make your life easier, plus has a shit tonne of extras.
@RickOFtheJames Define "suck". By that theory, every game made before 1990, would suck. There is more to game play than just graphics. Personally, I do not mind sparse graphics sometimes. It allows you to use your imagination.
Honestly, I have no time to finish Ultima: Pagan because of its complexities in the game. I think that it is because it is rushed (?) to create. But Diablo II stages more on repetitiveness hack-and-slash. Ultima requires more though.

No prob!

omg!!! this takes me back..i used to play this wen i was younger all the time...wow :)
I couldn't agree more. I felt exactly the same while playing it. Which proves that its a very successful game. Such a classic in every aspect, I can't believe they managed to create such a great and good looking game in huge technical limits of that time (CPU speed, rams, etc.)
This and Doom were my first games in a MS system. The fact that you could use every item was really impressive for me back then.
The Ultima series may be old, but the games therein set a standard in gaming that cannot be replicated. LB needs to bring Ultima back!
@srsupa dude, your story just perfectly matches with my own. OMG I remember I was a kid playing it, now that I haven't finished it I would love to play it again.
My favorite from this series....well actually the only one I've played haha but still i think i would like this one as opposed to the others anyways.
lol I was trying to click "Who are you" at the beginning of the conversation. Brings back great memories

Wow they showed that? And no cut-away? Damn that was pretty intense.
Ohhh my gooood!!! I played Ultima VIII so many times... I even recall the intro !!!
Gameroteca its for free now in origin :)
***** Yea I just got it.
Right! So nostalgic!
Yeah man,
The thing is, it is not even sugarcoated... just like today's media/games.
Very straightforward.
You just perfectly stated my own feelings on this. I used to daydream about doing my own remake of this game--expanding upon the culture and geography of the island, including additional dangers and puzzles. Most of all, I'd want to recapture and enhance the feeling of danger and looming tension of the game's atmosphere.

One of my first RPGs, and made me fall in love with isometric views.
Ultima Online was even better. Good times as a kid :)
Precursor for Diablo 1 :)
@srsupa Heck, I like this graphic too. Way better than 3D pre-rendered animations. Look and feel classical.
@davidcarterdavidcart Yes, you're absolutely right. Few games have any kind of atmosphere these days. Lots of good new games but I never get immersed in them. One exception is Dragon Age: Origins. But wish there were more.
@TheodenN i totally agree with you..this game rocked!!!
@blueboy093 why is that odd? Graphics are a huge part of most games if they suck the rest don't matter a whole lot
The avatar from Dungeon Keeper was a reference to Ultima.
Yeah, I do hope they can make a remake for this. A good remake of it. :)
Soooo nostalgic!!
@mirimiripipim U8 is very similar to Ultima online. At least old Ultima online
Try using DOSBox. ^___^
Played what, U8? Ofcourse I have been playing it for years. And if you are talking about U7 I played that too. It was nice but ı never got used to the wierd perspective and some technical issues and walking animations of U7 characters.

Nate Emi This game is free on origin right now under the On the house section.
@dcc1974 What most people doesn't even KNOW is that this piece of art right here actually preceded Diablo!
ALL DIABLO GAMEPLAY WAS BASED IN IT! =D
Yeah... Can't describe that more. :)
much better execution than skyrim intro
@srsupa "..idea of falling into a new strange world...alone, without any clue of what to do...."
This sums up the story. :)
Yeah, looks familiar right? :)
Ho, by Lord British, I have conquered thee, foul stair!
ohhh "perform your task executioner" and that axe is the executioner axe!!
Oh, you MUST play Ultima 7 and Serpent Isle!

Ahh this game was AWESOME! And the lead up to my 5 year addiction to "Ultima Online".
WoW has got nothing on UO!
A true classic.
They really don't make games like this anymore. I guess one of the closest modern game to Ultima: Pagan is Diablo 2. And comparing the places and size of two games, Diablo 2 isn't even half large of Ultima: Pagan's world.
I totally agree.
I played this game regularly when i was yung. The only thing I ever managed to do was steal stuff and die.
Actually I don't agree that Ultima: Pagan is a rushed game. Interesting I think completely the opposite. Such a huge, complex and good looking (compared to its developed year ofcourse) game can't possibly be made in rush or in a short time.

@anonimo468 i love it when that happens
I remember a door i could never open but i wanted to see the room beyond it so badly. And i tried to cast a golem to kill Darion the arms master. Good time.
bruce lee Depending the door it may have had nothing behind it (intended to be used in the cancelled expansion). Funny enough, if it was that door, a golem could have opened it for you, but again nothing on the other side.
according to wikipedia, it was kinda rushed. see it there. :|
Hey there!
Just do some googling of Pagan Ultima 8 and then download DOSBox and you are all set! :)
How come a Dos-based game can be better than today window-based games...
You people really need to check out Spoony's review.
If you're viewing this, you should also look up the intro to Ultima 6. It's better.
5:34 I remember thic nice scene
True that. :)
Best game ever!!!!!
Hm, well according to wiki... :P
Anyway, good luck! :D
@anonimo468 Now you know. :D
@yousini Abandonia
heheh nice! :)
What a ground-breaking franchise. Btw, this game predates Diablo.
@srsupa You have to look over the - granted - crappy graphics of Ultima VII. It is a... wow.
@srsupa I am exactly the same as you except I was 12 when I played and now im 24.
Avatar!!!! :D
gog.com get their version, final patched and its simple installer, meaning if you dont know how to use dos very well itll make your life easier, plus has a shit tonne of extras.
Spoony brought me here.
I look at Avatar, and he remind me Dungeon Keeper
LOL :D If the developers said so than so be it :)
Thanks! :)
audio is horable playing the same wind noises
You must have played too many modern games cuz you're also complaining about classic Mario classic Sonic Classic Metroid classic Legend of Zelda
hot damn, i gotta find the torrent of this game, time to replay it
they say diablo is a clone of this, i bet someewhat, and i dislike diablo, though i played the 2nd for quite some time
@RickOFtheJames Define "suck". By that theory, every game made before 1990, would suck. There is more to game play than just graphics. Personally, I do not mind sparse graphics sometimes. It allows you to use your imagination.
my favorite game... but too many bugs
@srsupa I played it in 1994 when I was 9! hahahahahaha
Honestly, I have no time to finish Ultima: Pagan because of its complexities in the game. I think that it is because it is rushed (?) to create.
But Diablo II stages more on repetitiveness hack-and-slash. Ultima requires more though.
it looked like runescape
Yeah me too before. \:D/
8 was crap 7 was where it's at... 8 was admittedly rushed, and got bad reviews then. have you tried to play it it? its lousy.
Wow thats old, and pretty dull and boring, anyhow.. free on origin that's what brought me here in the first place ;) ty for video.
You're welcome!
game bad
