Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra VS iPhone 14 Pro Max - Wait, What?

  • I look forward to this comparison every single year, and it's for obvious reasons. To compare the best of Samsung against the best of Apple is as mainstream as asking anyone who's the greatest between Messi and Ronaldo, or Michael Jordan versus every player before and after.
I haven't even finished talking and you're already typing away in the comments. Point is, All of us have at least some pre-defined bias, but in the end, it's the results that matter,.. Most of the time..
On one corner we have the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung's king of traditional flagships, and also one of the most kitchen sink phones in the market. On the other we have the iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple's best of the best, but where the approach is just as similar as it is different. After months of using each as either one of my daily drivers, it's time to call out a winner. I'm Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow and let's dive

I make my own test these two phones and Samsung have much more natural photos. Apple oversaturated and the oversharpening like crazy in almost every photo. Apple is a little bit better in video recording. The last good apple camera was, if I correctly remember, 12 ver iphone without this shitty technology that make everything super sharp.

Dude, awesome. Just staying objective about it as you should. Samsung brought the aspects that they were lacking in last time. Mainly a good processor like apple Camera optimization as well. Add to it the innate benefits on the S series to begin with, I agree. It is the clear choice. I'm an android guy but I will acknowledge the iphone is the better option historically. Things are more even now though I'd like to think. Have a nice day. Thanks for not being a loyalist to a brand that doesn't care about you. Doesn't matter which company you're a fan of. No sd card ,so hardly the perfect phone. IPhone has caught up to Samsung and is dragging them. They now have 120hz refresh rate, wireless charging, 8k video, always on display. An this guy is smoking if he thinks Samsung has the better camera, or photos. An Imessage is the reason Iphone will stay on top. Their software is just better, and Apple still does up to four years of updates, unlike Samsung that does only three years.

@@2ndtonone1000 In practicality i disagree. Ios is so closed that you can barely do anything you want there. Files management there is league inferior to samsung, you can prioritize apps over the other, you can change the speed of the animations, notifications are way more organized on samsung side and you can even change operative system if you want to improve it and you can manually improve it security way more or sideload apps that in ios don't exist. From a photographer's standpoint, I'd have to respectfully disagree. I've taken 100s of 1000s of photos from macro to astrophotography with the iPhone. I won't disagree that it has a great camera. But the controls you have with the s23 is far superior. The ppi you get with the galaxy is greater than the iPhone, the dynamic range, the contrast highlights, and even the focus on the galaxy is better IMO. I agree that the video is probably better on iPhone I don't use it much on either. I've always had a pretty soild stance with the iPhone always has been my go to for overall use but since ive switched to the galaxy for personal reasons like more customizable more battery life IMO better camera and just a lot cleaner look and feel. But overall they are both great phones no doubt I just found the S23U to be more my style.

People that aren’t deep into the Apple ecosystem just don’t understand the conveniences. In the past, I was a heavy android user (and developer) and despised Apple’s push to get you (and lock you) into their ecosystem. Now I just consider it an incredible convenience between 7 apple devices. I still wish Apple would do things to make it easier to use my old Android phones once in a while but I’m not holding my breath. But I’ve gotta say, this last change with eliminating the SIM card slot (on the iPhone 14’s) is really bad. I still move my SIM card to an older Samsung s20 occasionally and now if I move forward with Apple, that’s one more thing lost in the ability to go back and forth.
People talk about iMessage and FaceTime being a reason people can’t leave Apple. That’s totally not the case with me. I rarely use FaceTime. And iMessage has it’s conveniences but I could get past losing it with ease. The absolute biggest reason by far that the Apple ecosystem has me is Apple Notes. I use the heck out of Apple Notes and there’s no way to transfer out well over 1000 notes with pics and attachments to something cross platform or Android only (or at least not without major headaches). And, yes, that has a lot to do with Apple not providing an easy way to do that. But I’ve used a *lot* of note taking apps on both iOS and Android. The integration Apple Notes has with other apple apps (and other iOS apps) is much better than anything else I’ve used. Sure there are more features in some other apps, but I don’t need a huge number of features I never use over better integration between apps.

I personally only really care about photography for my phones, and i need my phone to be able to work seamlessly w/ windows. I was sick of emailing myself documents so i made the switch lol. I have a samsung laptop and its really a great experience with their laptop! Their ecosystem is improving.

What fascinates me about Apple products, and iPhones in particular, is that the hype about Apple has managed to convince almost everyone and even the ''Pro-Android'' that what Apple does with its iPhones is the norm, and that anything different and often even better is ultimately bad 🤦🏽‍♂️
It's normal to go into the iPhone settings to disable HDR video, change Photographic Style profil... , but it's abnormal if not an aberration to disable the scene optimizer on the Samsung to have more natural colors, it's abnormal to fix the video exposure if you don't like the Samsung's automatic exposure, it's abnormal to use Samsung's pro mode, but completely normal to use Apple's ProRaw and proRes... WHY !!! 🤷🏽‍♂️
The iPhone's HDR photo is abnormally bad for a smartphone of this price, but since it's Apple, it's ok ...
In video, the iPhone applies an orange tint on the skin tones wich makes you look like a carrot 🥕, but it's Apple so it's fine...
Honestly, I really can't understand how people find the video quality of iPhones superb 🤷🏽‍♂️
Video quality of iPhones is the most overrated thing in the world.
HDR is exaggerated, oversharpened images, but above all, the management of sky and skin colors by iPhones in video is horrible 🤢, sorry but, I really can not understand

As a truck driver the s23 ultra has been the best phone for the job. Bigger sharper screen for using maps. A capable/ competent voice assistant that actually helps, and finally the astronomical zoom that saves me from walking half a mile to my truck to get the trailer number. It does everything faster than when i had an iPhone, the back doesn't get hot unless I'm wireless charging. Being able to have all my Bluetooth devices connected is helpful for when i need to switch from headset to truck speakers. The iPhone felt more like a phone that someone with fewer responsibilities would use.

I have tested the cameras on the iphone 14 Pro which is the same as the Pro Max. The rear cameras are good not the best though. However, It has few limitations. No night mode for the 2X, 3X and selfie portrait. The front facing camera HDR is very inconsistent for pics and not great at 4K and 1080p 60fps especially on sunny days over exposing faces and the background A LOT!! Also, the Ultrawide angle shots tend to over expose certain areas of the pics especially clouds in the sky. This has been an issue on iphones for a while. I would say the cameras on the S23 Ultra are more versatile and all around better.

Funny because I “have been switching” - for the past Three years - trying to go from iOS to the android platform and I just can’t make it happen. I purchase the Galaxy (Note 10, 20 and now S23 Ultra) outright and end up gifting them away. Usually I give myself a month / at home and on Wi-Fi to get myself like it. Currently, with my S23 Ultra I made the switch (swapping e-sim) and using it as my DD for 3 weeks…. Then back to my iPhone 14 pro max. On my humble opinion the S23 Ultra has so much more to offer however, the iOS gives me the “comfort zone”… maybe I need to see a therapist or get a flip phone lol! On a more serious note, I am outside in a sunny environment right now typing this on my 14 pro max, wishing I was doing it from the S23 Ultra - because of the screen brightness and clarify(?) that is so much better on the Ultra vs the 14 pro max. All IMO

I will be honest. I'm not a fan of the iOS ecosystem. However both are great phones. I purchased the S23 Ultra. I prefer android. I love the multi-tasking, functionality and customization. Then Samsung Dex is a plus. The S-Pen can be used for multiple things other than signing, taking notes, and drawing. You can use it to take pictures by clicking the button. You can use it for changing slides in an orientation. There are so many things you can use it for. I don't care about iMessage and FaceTime. There are other options. I noticed that's what majority of the people purchase iPhones for. It's not a big deal to me. If the video quality is a difference maker too. It's not a big deal to me either. And based on your review it's not anything significant. Then having more storage will make the price a tad bit higher. But the price difference isn't significant. Overall great video.

I'm on the fence if I want to get an iPhone 15 Pro Max when it launches or another Galaxy Ultra series. The main issue i've had with my S22 Ultra is abysmal battery life compared to the last few iPhones I had. I keep hearing the S23 Ultra is better. But i'm wary to put my trust in that for another year after the S22 Ultra has failed me so drastically. I can't always be tethered to a charger with the work I do. And even in my free time I don't want to worry about decreasing every performance setting to the minimum if i'm going out for more than a few hours at a time.

I love both of them but in so many ways Samsung Ultra phones have been winning.

I have the iPhone 13 Pro Max and just got the Samsung S23 Ultra, and I will say, I like the iPhone more because it last a lot longer battery wise based on my use. I have been annoyed at how much i have to charge up, but the thing that annoys me the most is that the Samsung system takes a large chunk of the internal storage. I also like the photos on both, but iPhone is more true to life. The galaxy tends to over saturate and smooth out pictures to the point it looks fake. Still love both phones.

I traded my 14 pro max for the 14 plus for two reasons. The battery life and the weight of the phone. Compared to the 13 PM the 14 is a huge disappointment especially for battery life and I will be interested to see if the 15 pro max is substantially better.

By your logic the Samsung is for nerds, I knew how to use a smartphone and I still choose Apple because iPhone serves my needs better, it’s better for accessibility and yes IT’s easier to use but so what? As a content creator, the iPhone is far better, saying an iPhone is for dummies is insulting and ignorant which is typical of Android users who have an inferiority complex.

I never owned an iphone, but ipad pro left me scratching my head trying to figure out their barebones file manager or a decent replacement for it that's free. Or finding a decent player to play videos, some apps are straight up banned from the app store and need ridiculous workarounds. To this day i still don't know how to get rid of all notifications at once if it's even possible.

After having numerous problems with the 14PM (on 2 different phones no less) and iOS 16, during a fit of anger, I bought the s23 UItra. I had a Note something or other about 7-8 years ago and as I recall, I didn't have the greatest experience and got something else the following year. My initial thought was to use this S23 Ultra for a few months then wait for the iPhone 15s to come out and get one of those. I've had this S23 Ultra for close to 5 months now and while I've tried (LOL) to find problems with it, I cannot find any. I sold my Apple Watch 8 during my anger fit and have been watch-less since. After seeing the new Galaxy Watch 6 Classic release a few days ago (I think that rotating bezel rocks) , i'm seriously thinking of going all in on the Samsung ecosystem. Honestly, I can't believe what i'm typing here! Thanks Jaime for the review!

I have 3 things to say about this:
    1. OneUI now also has stacked widgets, so that may be useful to you ;)
    2. The iPhone may be cheaper in the US, but abroad it's the other way around. Here in the Netherlands, the S23 Ultra is the cheaper phone.
    3. Frankly, I thought the photos and videos from both phones looked pretty average in this review. I have the S23 Ultra myself, and the pictures my phone takes are way sharper and just.... better than what I saw here. Strange...

I am definitely a UI whore and that was the biggest let down of the iPhone 14 Pro when I tested it for a few weeks. I feel like there is so much wasted space and I really wish I could shrink down the menus and icon sizes a lot more. Going back to my S22 Ultra was a breath of fresh air.
I will say that iMessage is huge and I really wish I had it on my Galaxy. I also think that the purple 14 Pro is one of the sexiest phones ever. Absolutely love that color!

I usually switch from Android to iPhone every 2 years. Had the Samsung S21 and S22 ultra and also has the the iPhone 13 and and now the 14 pro max and the only 2 things I miss from Samsung is Dex and being able to move my apps icons to different areas on my screen. Other than that iPhone wins everything else the S23 battery wins by a few mins but it’s also running a 5000 mah battery. I was going to switch S24 in February but I have a feeling this next iPhone is going to be the best one made, just because how close Samsung came to beating it with the S23. So I’ll probably hold off until the S25.
