I believe that famous survivor Ruth Becker was in this lifeboat and I remember in an interview she was asked to give up her blanket to one of the firemen who was in the boat with her. This could have been Frederick Barrett

If you haven’t already, you should do a video on the rather eventful life of Arthur John Priest, the unsinkable stoker. For those not aware, Mr Priest survived 5 ship sinkings, 4 of which were pretty spectacular combat losses in WW1. He was on Titanic when she sank, he was on her sister ship Brittanic when she hit the mine and sank. He was on HMHS Asturias when she was torpedoed by a German U-boat, RMS Alcantra when she had her gun dual with the SMS Greif, and the SS Donegal when she was also torpedoed. He also was on RMS Olympic when she had her collision with HMS Hawke. After all this, he retired from a life at sea, though he claimed it was because nobody wanted to sail with him since it seemed like every ship he sailed on was cursed to sink, or in olympics case try its best to sink.
I would like to point out as well just how miraculous this feat is. Stokers work deep down in the lower decks of the ship well below the waterline. Together with the other members of the engineering division, they generally had the lowest survival rates on ship sinkings, since their large spaces were often the ones getting penetrated and flooded, and they had the longest trip to the upper decks where they could get off the ship.
I would be interested in that too. I wonder if I might be distantly related to Arthur J Priest - Priest is of course my surname.

Violet Jessop was an amazing survivor as well. She was on all 3 sisters during their disasters---Titanic and Brittanic during their sinkings, and the Olympic when she collided with the Hawke. She was one lucky woman. Another great one, Sam. Thoroughly enjoyed, as usual. (Jan Griffiths).

Frederick Barrett is among my favorite figures of the Titanic. I like his story seen in Saving The Titanic. He's someone who's got to have more coverage than just famous figures.

Barretts story is shown in 1979 and 1997 movies. 1979 deleted this sequence.
Barrett himself is frequently featured in movies and documentaries. Most notable the musical, in which Barrett is inaccurately depicted as dying.

Fyi: the term/position of "fireman" originates from railroad locomotives, which uses steam propulsion via a boiler; this technology would eventually find its way into ships and the term/position, "fireman," would move along with it.
@@HenrikofEldenbright thanks. Typically, in U.S., they're often called "railroads," likely, in part, due to the American folk song, "I've Been Working On The Railroad." You're probably correct to them being, in official capacity, "railway," but I suppose I'm just use to saying "railroad" because of Monopoly. 😉😃🚆
If there’s something I’ve noticed, Fredrick Barrette story I’ve never heard until the 100 anniversary in 2012, before that there was almost nothing or any info about him.
It's amazing because he was able to see it all from the collision damage to the boiler room flooding and he managed to escape. just in time in fact if he didn't go out the ladder anytime sooner he probably would have got flushed away by the water flooding into boiler room 5. Talk about cutting it close.

Another incredible story of the titanic was that of Violet Jessop. She was a nurse who was on board all three Olympic class ocean liners. She was on board the Olympic when it collided with a British cruiser HMS Hawke in 1911. She survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Finally she survived the sinking of the Britannic in 1916.

Frederick Barrett is truly one of the most amazing stories of Titanic and the fact he never worked as a fireman again; thanks for sharing.
I don't think anyone really knows what he did after the titanic, after testifying at the inquiries he just seemed to disappear into obscurity.
Unlike George William Beauchamp who worked as a stoker alongside Frederick Barrett. He thought there wouldn’t be another ship sinking so tragic, but man was he strongly mistaken.

@@litorres4125 I just found it again. It's called Saving the Titanic. It focuses what went on in the boiler rooms at the time of the sinking. It also goes a bit into the politics that was taking place on the ship at the time.
@@AmazingKevinWClark Went looking to see if anyone had mentioned Saving The Titanic, it's available to watch on TH-cam if anyone wanted to watch it. It offers a different, and less well known, perspective on the sinking. The engineers, fireman, electricians and the other below decks crew worked hard to keep the ship's power on and the pumps going as long as possible. Their actions saved a lot of lives that night and very few of them survived.

Harold Bride, one of the marconi wireless operators did survive the sinking of the Titanic, but what happened to Jack Phillips? Can you do a video about the story of Marconi wireless operator, Jack Phillips and how he became one of the heroes on the Titanic?
IIRIC Jack Phillips made it to a lifeboat but unfortunately died of hypothermia.

If you ever seen the 1953 movie A Night to Remember then you understand that James Cameron's 1997 Titanic movie is basically a shot for shot remake of the 53 movie and the 53 Titanic movie had many glaring oversight and interpretations of the disaster including in that movie the ship didn't even break into she sunk in one piece
There are even videos on TH-cam where they compare scene-for-scene James Cameron's the Titanic movie with the 1953 A Night to Remember movie literally shot-for-shot scene-for-scene

I've often heard that after the sinking Barrett pretty much dropped off into obscurity. Then I heard he worked on one other ship as well. Could you do some sort of aftermath story on him?

It's important to remember also that there was another Frederick William Barrett on board the ship. He was a crewmember but didn't survive the night. He was born in 1879 and I don't think his body was ever recovered.

Frederick Barret's story is a very interesting and important one! Just one small quibble: According to On a Sea of Glass (pages 216 and 219), the water jet coming out of the side of Titanic wasn't water being pumped out to keep the ship afloat longer, but instead cooling water from the ship's condenser (used to turn waste steam back into liquid water for the boilers).
You are right about the condenser but the way I understand it is they repurposed it to help keep the flooding at bay

I have to admit that I thought that lead stoker portrayed in 1997 Titanic, was just a generic fictitious stoker character showed as tough guy and all. I know I was wrong now and that it was a portrayal of this remarkable person. Big respect to Mr Barrett for his conduct on that horrible night.

Frederick Berret and the other boiler room workers were true heroes. They stayed at their posts and helped the Titanic stay afloat for as long as possible
This man also holds alot of info about Titanic sinking that would otherwise be lost. If he did not get into a lifeboat and survive.

A man named James Farrell from Co. Longford, Ireland, helped save the lives of two girls, also from the same parish in Longford. His body was found later and buried at sea. There is a beautiful memorial garden erected in Ennybegs Village, Longford, to honour his memory and act of heroism. His actions have been protrayd in the film "A Night To Remember"

Sam, i have watched so many of your videos and i have been a Titanic historian/buff enthusiast since i was a child! I love how you explain things and have shown facts and stories about Titanic and her two sisters of the Olympic Class! I have to say that this story of Barrett is nothing short of a miraculous tale that has captured the imagination! I have a question for you though and speaking of stokers, have you heard of the story of the man Arthur John Priest? His story is also amazing! He actually survived several ship sinking disasters including the HMS Alcantara, the younger sister of Titanic, the HMHS Britannic and the SS Donegal! In addition, he also managed to survive when the Olympic’s collision with the HMS Hawke. And in 1912 he signed on the Titanic as a stoker at Southhampton, he managed to survive the disaster! On top of that he received the Mercantile Marine Ribbon for his service in the Great War in 1917! He became known as the “Unsinkable Stoker”!
But Frederick Barrett’s story is incredible and he seemed to be such humble and yet heroic stoker who did so much for so many and this tribute really does do him justice!

10:40 - "Water is incredibly heavy."
Actually, it is not! Who told you that? If that would be true, then the coal would have floated on the incoming water (which it didn't). As a matter of fact, water is less dense and less heavy than coal.
The sudden flooding of boiler room #5 must have been caused by something else, like a structural failure of some connections/bolts between parts of that wall, perhaps due to the continuous leaking. It can't have been a matter of overall built-up water pressure, unless a much larger volume of water was pushing down on that bunker wall than than the actual volume of that coal bunker, which could only have been the case much later in the sinking process.
I remember that in an earlier video, you also said that the water pressure in the coalbunker would have built up until that wall would break, which doesn't make sense given the already established fact that water is significantly less dense and less heavy than coal, and that the bunker was already half empty at this point of the journey, which would have meant that although water occupies a larger volume than coal (due to the fact that there's no air between water particles) the pressure on the wall of that bunker would have been more or less the same as at the start of the voyage.
In other words, the fragment from that Titanic documentary that you showed in an earlier video showing the bunker wall suddenly break at a relatively early stage of the sinking under the alleged 'increased pressure' of the water, is probably incorrect, although if something like that would indeed have happened (i.e. an accellerated flooding of the entire boiler room) it may have only looked like a sudden collapse of the entire wall to the firemen who would still be working there, since the water suddenly pouring down on them would probably have obscured the view of the actual wall.
Since the wall of the coal bunker wasn't waterproof, the most likely scenario would have been that leaks would have gradually filled the boiler room with water, rather than increased pressure on the wall causing a sudden collapse of that wall in such way, that it would flood the boiler room in mere seconds.
The eyewitness account of a sudden flooding of that room can only be explained by assuming a structural failure of the joints of parts of that wall, maybe due to disproportional stress of the water leaking/streaming out of that coal bunker where the individual parts/plates of the bunker wall were connected. It can't have been 'increased water pressure' due to the supposed 'incredible weight' of the water, unless the collapse would have happened much later during the sinking, which would alter the timeline described in your videos.
Since I'm not an engineer, I'm just using my common sense to try to make sense of the events and the eyewitness accounts. I would like to know from an expert what really caused boiler room #5 to 'suddenly' flood. Could you please address this issue in a future video? I'm afraid I don't buy your 'water pressure conspiracy theory'. 😉
Per Robert Ballard: the size of the hole in the Titanic (cumulative) was only 12 square feet. Hold your arms and hands outstretched... sideways. Keep them outstretched and move your arms so they're vertical. The area your arms cover, horizontally and vertically, is the ENTIRE size of the hole in the Titanic. Not the size of one of the gashes. It's the size of all the gashes put together.

Great topic, as usual! So, I will just leave this out there, should there be museums making money from this tragedy? I can see some topics from history fueling a museum's content, but this topic is eerie. Is it honoring the dead, or just making money from a creepy shipwreck?
