    Here are two interrelated questions assuming all other facts remained the same. 1. How much sooner would the crew have needed to spot the iceberg to have been able to avoid hitting it? 2. How much slower would the Titanic have had to be traveling for the crew to have avoided hitting the iceberg if they had spotted it when they did?

    I don't personally think it would have taken place (Titanic capsizing), as:
    1. The heavy port list was more due to the D deck gangway door and the flooding of the associated big hall. Had the coal been enough to capsize it to port, it would have had when the water flooded D deck.
    2. The bulkheads of the Titanic allow roughly even flooding to take place, with any listing kept to a minimum. Due to this, when the water would reach above the bulkheads, the tilt would be minimum.
    3. If we look at the sinking of her sister Britannic, she had a huge hole instead of damaged rivets. Despite this it did not develop a list till later in the sinking. Her starboard list was due to the portholes. While the E deck portholes were open on both sides, the ship was moving to starboard which tilted the ship a bit, thereby allowing greater water influx from the starboard side and ultimately taking over.
    Long story short, it is very unlikely for Titanic to capsize. In fact, she was made in a way to prevent capsizing, as it omitted the bulkhead arrangement like that in Lusitania. The explanation given by White Star was based on this premise as well, when enquired about the design of the bulkheads.

    • @EarlTheWhiteNinja
      @EarlTheWhiteNinja 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think you're right, however Scotland Road/the gang way door would have been Titanics version of Britannic's open portholes, and caused the ship to gradually develop a severe port list until she eventually would roll on her side, but not go completely keel up

    • @mikedicenso2778
      @mikedicenso2778 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jaredpatterson1701 No, because like the actual events, the ship, even with engines stopped or in reverse it would take a few minutes and a quarter mile to come to a complete stop. So the iceberg would be way behind them.

    The capsize would happen very fast. The list would start quite slowly but progress faster and faster as the ship was taking on water, to come to an eventual moment where the balance of water would just make the ship capsize in mere seconds.

    I can’t get enough of these Titanic videos! It’s always been my favorite shipwreck to learn about, ever since I first heard about it back in my elementary school days. It’s a very sad story, but yet it’s a story that constantly intrigues me. You’ve got the biggest ship in the world at the time, along with all of these different classes of people and all it took was an iceberg to take her down, along with all those poor people. Thank you for all these videos!

  • @shadowpersonoftheunknown6245

    I'm guessing they wouldn't of even had much time to assess the situation before realizing that they were totally screwed. They might not have even had enough time to send out any distress signals or launch any lifeboats. If that was the case, we'd probably would have never known what even happened to the ship let alone be able to locate it eventually. It would have been one of those 'it mysteriously vanished' stories

    • @karthikk2719
      @karthikk2719 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True. It would have been like one of those flight got disappeared incidents except that the loss of life count would be much much higher. And the worst part is, you cannot find the ship at all!. Even with almost accurate location it took about 70 years to find it. Imagine if there is no location at all!. Its just lost for ever. Even now my heart pains to see those underwater clips and to think that its just there but we cant do anything about it but just let it erode away year by year :( and some day there wont be anything left of it :(. Many people have said that its a lost purpose to try to lift the titanic underwater and some of the survivors of the titanic have asked not to disturb it because its like a graveyard for the lost souls. True, but still it pains.
      I would say the crew on Titanic handled the situation at their best and set high standards for ever.

    I completely agree with you, Sam - I think, given the coal situation, and Scotland Road, that if the Titanic had struck the iceberg on the port side, she wouldn't have lasted even an hour. I’ve got this burning question about the watertight compartments. If the titanic had transverse bulkheads across the top of the compartments, would that have been enough to prevent the ship from sinking since the water can no longer flow over the top of the compartments? Or would six rooms flooded still be too much buoyancy lost to stay afloat?

    • @poptartwarriors9369

      It would still sink as it was only able to hold four, maybe if the damage ratio was spread out maybe but who knows

    • @vequiera
      @vequiera 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@poptartwarriors9369 the thing is more recently I’ve been told that the reason she couldn’t handle more than four flooded compartments was because at that point she would be low enough in the water to allow water to spill over the top of the bulkheads. So I’m curious if Titanic could have survived losing that much buoyancy if water spilling over the bulkheads wasn’t a factor to consider

    • @EarlTheWhiteNinja
      @EarlTheWhiteNinja 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@vequiera well, after losing four bulkheads, her bow would have probably been almost at the water line, so the water might have been able to flood in through any openings in the ship.

    As always, thanks for these videos Sam, they are very well done. This is why I feel that there is a God because there's no way that these things which helped the Titanic last longer could happen just by chance.
    Here are some ideas for future 'What if Titanic' videos:
    1. What if the crew had enough time to get Collapsibles A and B down and lower them into the water? Everything else prior would be the same and Boat A landed upright, Boat B landed upside down, but Titanic sank at 2:30am instead of 2:20, or the lifeboat launching sequence happened slightly faster and by 2:10am both lifeboats were away (Boat B just got away). The video could also include who quite possibly would have been in those lifeboats.
    2. Everything that happened the night the Titanic sank is the same, but the temperature at the time the Titanic sank is +4 degrees Celsius or slightly warmer than that?
    3. What if the watertight bulkheads went up to B-deck like on the Olympic and Britannic after the sinking -- how much longer would Titanic have remained afloat, or would that have mattered.
    Here's a question that you could do a video on, Why didn't the Britannic break in two when she went down?
    Cheers.
    Josh.

    So, what I'm hearing is, it was pure dumb luck that Murdoch ordered the ship to turn to starboard and present the side of the ship that would offer the most resistance to sinking? It could quite easily have been a loss of all life if not for that decision.
    I'd like to think that Murdoch did know that the ship was vulnerable to sinking on her port side, but somehow I doubt it and think he chose the tiller command based upon what he thought would give the ship the best shot at clearing the iceberg.

  • @ap6806
    @ap6806 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So basically after the ship hit the iceberg, it had the weight of the engines weighing it down in the back, water weighing it down in the front, and tons of coal weighing it down towards one of its sides. It is a wonder with this ship being pulled in so many different directions at once, that all it did was break in half and not start pulling apart in different areas as well.

    But this also isn't taking into account that the iceberg isn't symmetrical and the steel on the port side wasn't as compromised as the starboard side was due to the fire. The damage would be different as it is, and it may have been survivable as well if there at all.

    Your explanation on this was very good, but I mean wouldn't it still have the same effect as it did on the starboard side because I think the layers at the bottom of the ship were even so if the iceberg had hit the port side the same amount of water would enter the port side as it did with the starboard side but in an alternate scenario depending on where the hull the port side of the ship hit the iceberg, also depends on how much damage is done and overall depends on if the ship will sink or not.

    Your Titanic videos especially G what if parts is really cool. I mean your young man your teaching history you have a good TH-cam channel and I see really good things for you in the future. My daughter completely loves watching videos because she likes to learn. A b honor roll every year since she's been in school. She did not get it from me. Okay good video young man keep it up

      Thanks man! One big thing I try to do with my channel is make my videos in a way that everyone can enjoy them. A lot of kids love to learn about Titanic but many youtube channels talk about things that are a bit to rough for kids to watch, if you know what I mean. So when I make my videos I do my best to try and keep it as family friendly as possible, so everyone can enjoy learning about these events from history.

    Love these what if videos. Please do one on what if the iceberg never happened. I think it would be amazing to see things like when they would of made port, coal consumsion for the madden voyage, how would the coal strike in the UK affect getting coal in America for the return trip, planned turn around time in port, and the planned next voyage. Things like that.

    What if they moved the coal to the back of the ship. Would the weight in the back of lifted the front out of the water. And slow down the sinking?

  • @goldfing5898
    @goldfing5898 ปีที่แล้ว

    Before watching the video, a wild guessing: In real history, the water coming from the Mail Room and Cargo Room areas on starboard side changed sides and then flooded the port side by invading the wide Scotland Road. If the iceberg hitted Titanic on the port side instead, the wide Scotland Road would have contributed to a quicker flooding and a stronger list to port, maybe even leading to a capsize, which would have made loading the lifeboats much more difficult, especially on Murdoch's starboard side. I assume that in the end, the outcome would have been even worse.

  • @WhatsThePointPicture
    @WhatsThePointPicture ปีที่แล้ว

    One more thing to consider that could make your situation worse is that with the port side list, if the iceberg had struck on that side the ship, it would have essentially been leaning into the impact which may have actually led to even more substantial damage from the initial hit than what it took in the actual scenario, meaning it could have taken on water at an even faster rate.

    So now I wonder what effect the 300 tons of relocated coal had on the Titanic's ability to steer, and how that would have affected the crew's last-second attempt to swing around and dodge the iceberg.

    I have thought about another what if scenario about the Titanic. It is a what if scenario about the breakup. In real time, the Titanic broke in two from the boat deck to the double bottom.
    -- What if the Titanic broke up backwards? What if the Titanic broke in two into a V shape from the bottom up?

    I think it might be interesting to think about how the rescue efforts might have changed as well. It took nearly an hour to even begin sending calls for help. Passengers and crew didn’t know or believe it was sinking for a long time. If the ship begins sinking quickly on the port side they definitely lose time but you can bet the passengers and all crew jump into action quicker.

    What if titanic had reversed into the iceberg in an attempt to counterflood the vessal? (Damaging 1-2 rear watertight compartments to counteract the front 5-6 flooded compartments)

    • @rimski7265
      @rimski7265 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The reason the titanic sunk is that the front of the ship was continuing to be drug down which kept exposing more compartments to sea water. Flooding a compartment or two on the rear could theoretically have kept the ship close enough to level to keep the ship’s middle compartments from being flooded.

    So basically, the port side stern being hit would be the ultimate worst combination
    And the starboard bow with topped watertights [no Scotland Road] would be the best...outside of never hitting the iceberg anyway.

    • @nowhereman1046
      @nowhereman1046 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, hardly. The damage could've continued down the entire side of the ship had the port around maneuver not been done or the rudder not turned quickly enough to start it in time. Then the ship sinks in a matter of minutes, not hours after the collision.

    Mr Andrews 1.5 hour calculation was based on evenly distributed coal bunkers. They got two hours 40 minutes from the extra 300 tons on the port side. I'm wondering if the modeling would show an hour or less to sink the ship given the coal movement.
    I believe early models that didn't account for the coal showed around 1.5 hours and a capsize. That would have to be the maximum time, but it would be massively accelerated due to the coal.

  • @joshualee1367
    @joshualee1367 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Sam just watched your vid on Titanic striking on the port side and I was just thinking. If she already had a list to the port due to the coal being shifted to that side. It may have been only 3 degrees or so but that would have had the water reaching Scotland Road much much sooner. then take into account Murdock opening the gang plank door thats a heck of a lot of water.

    If it hit on the port side it would do less damage since the starboard side had a fire making the starboard side weaker

    Also, remember that the burned coal was moved to the other side of Titanic causing a slight list
