    I think the biggest tragedy is that there wasn't some sort of plan in place to rescue people from the water or fill up the boats. I understand that some of the boats had to be launched without being filled to capacity and that there was a fear of being swamped. But i think when the boats were lowered, they should have met in the water away from the Titanic and passengers transferred over from one boat to another. Once a boat was filled with passengers to full capacity it could sail away to be safe and the empty boat could go back to either try and pick uo up more people from the sinking ship (like Captain Smith requested) or try to pick people up from the water. Not everyone would be saved but at least more people would have been. Of course its easy to suggest solutions years later when you weren't there.

Coincidentally, I have just finished reading up on the Duff-Gordon's case in a lovely old book I have, which had a long chapter on what happened, including a transcript of the hearing and the truth is just as you state it. The Duff-Gordon's were cleared of all the accusations made against them, although sadly the saying that "mud sticks" proved true as many people still preferred to believe the lie. Lady Duff-Gordon also didn't say much while in the lifeboat because she was feeling horribly seasick and was doing all she could to not throw up. I also get seasick on small boats, so I know how she would have felt. So that exchange about not going back to help others simply did not happen.

    Actually, your intro is *slightly* off on some important facts. The reason that Lifeboats 1 and 2 were swung out the way they were was not so much to prevent damage to Collapsibles C and D, but because they served the duel purpose of being emergency cutters that *had* to be swung out, ready to go, hence no canvas covers, in case of someone fell overboard or there was an encounter at sea where the Titanic might have to stop and immediately rescue survivors of a shipwreck, etc. When docked in port the two cutters would be stowed like all the other boats inboard and right over the collapsible boats.
    The cutters being in a ready-to-go launch configuration probably also contributed to the speed of the Titanic's crew in launching the number of boats they were able to since they had two boats essentially swung out already and just being needed to be filled with people.
    In fact, every time Titanic went to sea, the crew had to take time to swing them out, which was considered a lifeboat drill since most the equipment used was very nearly identical to that used for the other boats, and involved dozens of crew members called to stations to swing them out. And swing the boats back in when in port. This, combined with two prior major drills, first at Belfast for Board of Trade agent Francis Carruthers where 16 lifeboats were lowered down, at least 6 to the water, and then again a few boats were lowered all the way as part of a drill at Southampton on the day of Titanic's sailing on April 10th.

    Hey there I've seen quite a few videos and I'm becoming a huge fan. I have an idea for a video. I don't know if you've talked about it but here it is:
    Did Murdoch really order the Titanic's engines full astern (like in the movie) or did he order them to a full stop? And if he did, did the engines really have enough time to get to spin the propellers as fast as it was shown in the movie?
    I've read in quite a few articles that if the propellers really did go full astern, the rudder's turn to starboard wouldn't be as effective because of the water flow.
    What do you think?

    • @HyperVegitoDBZ
      @HyperVegitoDBZ ปีที่แล้ว

      Titanic was moving up to full speed from 0 across several miles. The movie exxagurated this for action, rightfully so, in reality they had no possibility to turn so quickly so fast, even if Murdock didn't stop 2 proper ells, which he did, leaving only the starboard one active.

One of the female passengers said she refused to get in a lifeboat and went back to her room until someone stressed to her how much danger she was in. I don't recall her name, but she had a porcelain pig, which someone threw in the lifeboat and she wanted to go after it but refused to jump. Two men made a seat for her by locking their arms together and lowered her down. From the interviews, at first it sounds like people just thought it was safer to stay on the ship and didn't want to go in the lifeboats. I have heard that before.

    If I remember the sailor complained first that they had lost their kit; ergo the personal effects and professional equipment they needed. And then added that he couldn't buy a new one because his wages had just stopped. Little different, but not fully. When I read it he lost his tools of his trade, the company was not going to replace it, and his wages were stopped.
    THe 5 pounds was the cost of the equipment they needed to go back to work.
    The photograph that Lady Duff Gordon took with all the sailors after they reached NY was also damning on them. It made the sailors look like their private crew. Though it was more likely she just wanted something to keep after her traumatic event. From what I have read about her, her greatest problem was just having terrible taste.

On a video about 10 mysterious artifacts, someone raised the notion that the doll’s head in the movie was Eva Hart’s doll. I went, WHAT??! So I Googled Eva Hart’s doll. No one has done any decent article on this, but it appears that 1) Ballard discovered a doll’s head in the sand and took a photo which is on Facebook, but whether they ever retrieved it, I don’t know. 2) Cameron used Ballard’s photo to fake a doll’s head, which was supposed to be Cora’s. 3) Eva Hart’s doll’s head apparently traveled to Spain and was recovered by a fisherman and authenticated, which is mind boggling but no one has ever told this story, in an article. 4) Eva’s doll was sold at auction. Eva was contacted and apparently some deal was made, but Eva never owned the doll again. 5) Eva is always shown with her parents and a doll, which must have been the doll that floated to Spain, yet no reporter apparently ever interviewed Eva about the doll’s name, what she looked like, where she was left in Titanic, etc. 6) Apparently some information about the doll was obtained in a memoir of Eva’s-because someone knew to take the doll’s head in Spain and authenticate it by fitting it to a mold of a certain English doll manufacturer. Sam, go to work!

    • @ravenel2
      @ravenel2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So to clarify-there were at least two separate dolls on Titanic, and the one that was Eva’s and traveled to Spain is NOT the fake one in the movie, or the real one that Ballard photographed in 85.

    On the night of the April 15th, 1912, Titanic (also known at the time as The Unsinkable) went down while she was trying to break a speed record. Unfortunately, that record was never achieved and the RMS Titanic hit an iceberg in the midst of the Pacific. If they'd have had binoculars aboard, this probably wouldn't have never happened. Titanic was under the average in terms of safety at the time, as she had very few lifeboats. Quickly after the Titanic set on fire, the third class passengers were emprisoned downstairs making it impossible to reach the deck of the ship. It is also widely known the crew members were heavily armed. Surrounding ships such as the California tried to help and the Titanic operators told them to shut the .. up. The Titanic sank in one piece.

      Correct. Sam goofed up at the beginning and didn't describe their true purpose and why they actually were swung out. The boats were somewhat smaller than the regular 14 clinker-built boats and they were swung out so that they could be launched rapidly in the advent of a man overboard or coming across a small boat or people in need of rescue at sea.
      When at dock and until the ship was underway, the boats were brought back inboard and secured above the collapsibles.

    The fact that Lucy Duff-Gordon was more concerned about the loss of an item of clothing than the 1500+ people who were shrieking for help and dying is absolutely disgraceful. She must have been incredibly shallow and materialistic. I cannot believe that the subject of returning to pick up survivors was never discussed. Charles Hendrickson was probably the only one in the lifeboat who was honest about that. The rest of the people in the lifeboat probably denied that conversation because they didn't want to admit that they chose not to attempt to pick up survivivors. I am not sure why you want to paint Mr. Duff-Grodon as the good guy and Hendrickson as the media rat bad guy. If Hendrickson did tell the story of the checks to the press, I'd guess that he did out of disgust with the others for refusing to return. And you admit that you have no proof of Hendrickson being the source of the story but "you wouldn't put it past him". I wouldn't put it past a spoiled rich woman who was more concerned with clothing than human life to have refused to go back. And it sure does sound like that money was a bribe or hush money to keep everyone telling the same story. For a lifeboat with 12 to fail to return is inexcusable. If Cosmo Duff-Gordon had a real sense of decency, he'd have demanded that the crew row back to rescue survivors. Offering them money to do that would have demonstrated integrity. I do not understand why you perceive him as the victim. I like your videos but I disagree with your analysis.

It wasn't until much later when it was clear the situation was worse than it seemed at first that people started getting in the boats. The officers and crew didn't want to start a panic, so they kept the truth that the ship was going to sink less than two hours to themselves.
