"Pay attention to what Teal'c says" "There's a lot of humour in this show." ..... Indeed!
One of the things I love about this show is they are not afraid to call out issues on the show, continuity errors or make fun of themselves...
The slight continuity error between the name of movie O'Neil and SG1 O'Neill was turned into a fun reference between the difference in how the different actors portrayed the character... "That's O'Neill with 2 L's , there is another O'Neil with 1 L but he is way more serious "
I love that especially because everything they make that joke Jack holds up three fingers (at least that is what I remember but I do admit it has been awhile since I last watched it and my two clearest memories of it is when he is telling someone that he is trying to mess with so it may have only been those cases. I will be paying close attention when watching the podcast).
@@Duke00x Well the other part of the joke of holding up 3 fingers is telling the recipient to "read between the lines" - bet RDA loved that as a multi-faceted nonverbal iykyk. 😂😂
23:09 Correction : Michael Shanks and Vaitiare Bandera dated and had a kid together but they never married. Shanks is actually married to Lexa Doig.
Close enough, though, right?
@@brentallenlive I mean they did have a relationship so yeah.
Jeff, I think your ranking of this as the #1 episode so far is a really good call.
Kind of weird though since it's technically two episodes.
@@nildzrecastellanos True, but you just can't have one without the other.
A good phrase for Sam is “with all due respect” 😆
Yeah she does say that a lot.
Or any time she says she disabled some kind of safeguards. 😂
I love how Jeff was super paying attention and basically caught all the things. Looking forward to more SG1, because it's a wild ride.
Except for all the parts he about missed because he was looking down at his notes
@@Babylon5FortheFirstTime Let's be fair: notes good, key things acquired, ready for future episodes. :D
Now I'm sad that I lost my SG1 DVDs in a move... AND my B5 DVDs, which not gonna lie resulted it a smidge of rage.
@@Babylon5FortheFirstTime And now Brent knows the pain we've all felt when key moments were missed in B5 :). Great reaction, guys.
The General is nasty to Daniel because he has not been briefed yet so he is still under the impression that the bad guys had to have come through from Abydos and Daniel was supposed to have rendered the Abydos gate inoperable.
TBF, if you go back and watch, while General Hammond's initial salute is bad, O'Niell's is actually pretty textbook. What's more interesting is that Don Davis, Hammond's actor, was an Army captain in admin at Leonard Wood.
Which may be why his initial salute was bad. He had gotten a bit lazy with them.
This is exciting! I've only watched SOME Stargate SG-1. I know the characters, the overall arcs, some episodes, but I've never done a deep dive.
FYI, they're not headquartered in an old missile silo (if this gets corrected later on, I apologize) but rather the NORAD Cheyenne Mountain Complex, the former headquarters of the US Space Command. This is where all of the US and Canadian air space was monitored for some time. The shot of the massive doors is in fact the ACTUAL entrance to Cheyenne Mountain. Apparently the folks working there were tickled pink at the thought of there being a Stargate on site. Someone labeled a supply closet "Stargate Command."
Or WAS it just a supply closet? Dun dun dun....
Always trilled to see new people getting into SG-1, a wonderful series that doesn't get enough love in the sci-fi community!
Always excited to see new people discover Stargate! There are some ups and downs especially early on, but it's such a heartfelt and complex show. It also has the best pacing and progression of any show I've ever seen. They take their time with developing the world and the story over 10+ years.
One of my favoruite details is that Sam wants to be addressed by her rank, but she introduces herself as doctor to Daniel. 😂The way they portray academics on the show is so extra.
Close the sphincter! I am glad the show runners went with "Iris". 😂
Orifice may have also been considered 🤣
I laughed when Brent conflated Kurt Russell with Kurt Douglas.
there are 65 reasons why I will be hanging around for this show.
I do recall watching that very first episode when it first aired and seeing the alien fighter coming in and screaming, ""come on, we have missiles like stingers....'' and then the SG soldier fired a stinger and shot it out of the sky and thought to myself - ""well, I''ll shut up now P""
For sci fi lovers this show is a must watch, and Sam Carter is arguably the greatest ever female character (at least in the sci fi genre).
Carters I think is “that’s just it sir” or “do you realize what this means” pretty sure she says them at least 8 times a season .
The first thing I thought of was the fact that her haircut changes about 900 times throughout seasons 3 and 4, but technically that's grooming not speaking.
There have been several scientists who have been top athletes. Some have even gone to the Olympics. There are even a few literal rock star scientists, like Dr Brian May. He played guitar for the band Queen. Yea, he's an astrophysicist.
He was working on his doctorial thesis when Queen had their first big hit and he put his thesis on hold. A few years back he completed it and earned his PhD.
OMG I immediately clicked on this, I am so excited. I watched this as it came out when I was a kid. I used to stand on a chair in the kitchen with the volume of the tv (that was on top of the fridge) down super low so I could watch the 10pm showing. After B5 I think Stargate is my favorite show. 😁
Edit: now that I’ve finished the episode… WHY ARE YOU NOT THREE SEASONS IN SO I CAN BINGE?????!?
I'm with you brother!!
Just a suggestion but instead of rating Stargate episodes on 0-5 chevrons, how about 0-7 chevrons?
65 reasons to rewatch SG-1!
So this is the first thing I’ve seen from you guys and I subscribed from this episode, I’m a huge stargate fan and this show is awesome. Thanks for making these
Glad to have you along!
Oh boy. This is going to be a wild ride, and considering there are 10 full seasons - a long ride lol I honestly can't wait until you guys get to season 2 and 3. Season 1 is good don't get me wrong, but the world building and characters and amazing standalone episodes really kick into high gear starting in S2 and S3. That being said, I hope you guys have fun watching SG-1 because I'm sure we all are :D
... and SG:Atlantis after that, though that had the occasional "dud" episode.
@@TorIverWilhelmsen I feel like Atlantis started much stronger than SG-1 simply because the lore and world building was already in place and while it was a new setting with new characters etc. it all worked straight off to me. And while they did have a bad episode here or there, I'm pretty confident overall that Atlantis had the best run of all the series quality wise start to finish. Too bad about that cliffhanger though eh?
The reason Hammond says "You're in no position to make demands" angrily to Daniel.... when we (Jack) is introduced to Hammond, Hammond explains that is just a month or two from retiring and he might write a book. With Daniel alive, now Hammond has a lot of investigation to do and a lot of explaining to his superiors instead of coasting a month until retirement.
Fun fact a Stargate was found by someone in a forest hear in Australia, no idea where, it would be a blast to go & see it. 😊
Are we quite sure it isn't the real one? 😂
Big PROBLEM your skipping the movie that sets up the series. They do change some actors and don't treat the movie as hardcore cannon. The pilot was based on a follow on to the movie.
They know, they couldnt do it in time for "purely technical" reason of it not being available to them then.
Yet they have both seen the original movie before IIRC
And the pilot was also written so they viewers didn’t have to see the movie to understand what’s happening.
But as Nic0maK said, there were also technical reasons that prevented us from doing so, otherwise we would have started there.
As a Trek fan, gotta admit I love a good 47.
Thank you for getting it
"But you came through!" 👏👏 well done, first-timer 😅
The frost and forced exits through the Stargate are eventually explained as minute misalignments in the Stargate, which are later corrected for once they have better data to work with. Afterwards, the transitions coming out of the Stargate are much smooter except for cases of obvious malfunctions such as power fluctuations within the Stargate.
Edit: Yes, the order of the symbols VERY MUCH matters.
Edit 2: As to the translation issue, a fan theory which I believe has some backing by the creators is that languages slowly get added to Stargate traveler's brains over time as they keep traveling through the Stargate. Languages spoken that often travel through the Stargate are more readily transmitted to other travelers going through relevant Stargates. Some Languages are less available, particularly non-human languages.
No, if you recall what the symbols are for (and Jeff made a more or less accurate guess) you will realize that the only symbol whose order matters is the origin (7th). Later you will notice people look at the activated DHD (code already entered) and get a usable address from that.
@@b.s.864
Sorry, but that is EXTREMELY WRONG. Symbol order is extremely important. If you notice in season 7, they learned that the gate symbols also can be used as an alphabet representing sounds. You cannot just input the symbols in any order you please. In fact, in season 10 Vala Mal Doran specifically was having dreams about rearranging the same set of symbols which kept leading to completely different Stargate addresses. The order of symbols VERY MUCH matters.
@@Seastallion That must be a continuity error then. The example I cited of tracking someone by seeing the symbols on the activated DHD (which does not show the order of entry) occurs multiple times in the show. If order mattered they would have to test up to (6*5*4*3*2)=720 times even if they got all the symbols correct. As explained in the first movie, each symbol maps to a point in space and the gate goes to a place defined by that set of points. Even if you change the order you are inputting the same set of points. It does not work like a phone number.
Kinda guessing as I write this (it's based a bit on what I recall of explanations given throughout the franchise, but I'm also kinda just making this up)... Suppose that for some 2D reference plane you use the symbols to represent coordinates within that plane, making each symbol effectively like A3, G9, etc. in a game of Battleship. Now suppose that the first symbol in the stargate address is selecting a coordinate in a reference plane that is the "left" side of a box, the second symbol in the address is selecting a coordinate in a reference plane that is the "right" side of a box, and so on. Whatever the exact order the Ancients designed the system to look at each side and however the Ancients defined where exactly those six reference planes even are to begin with, you're going through and selecting a specific point on each face of a cube and drawing lines to connect the selected points on opposite faces. The destination is at the intersection between the three lines that have been drawn.
If you were to enter an address with the "left face" and "top face" symbols swapped, that would change the destination pretty drastically because two of those three lines would change.
If you knew the six symbols that somebody had used for an address but didn't know their order, you'd have a 1 in 720 chance of guessing the correct sequence. There would be one way to form the same lines they did, and 719 ways to form different lines.
Hm... Something interesting though... From what I recall it seems as if nowhere in the franchise does any address ever repeat a symbol. Repetitions would be a possibility if the coordinates worked the way I just guessed that they do. Hitting "B2" six times should be just as valid as anything else.
And actually wouldn't it be more likely to be a system of polar coordinates instead of cartesian coordinates? So a pair of symbols would represent an angle to turn in a particular plane and a distance to head out in that angle away from your origin point. Repeated symbols should be a possibility in that approach as well.
Hm... 38 common symbols on each stargate (plus the origin symbol is the 39th)... If you assign values to each symbol from 0 to 37 and multiply that value by approximately 9.47 (that's rounded from 360/38) you could use those as the degrees for each angle in a polar coordinate system. And the 0 to 37 values (or maybe 1 to 38?) could work for distance as well if multiplied by whatever value the Ancients would've used as a standardized astronomical unit.
Wait... spherical coordinates (which is what I should have said instead of polar coordinates, polar is 2D and spherical is 3D) are two angles and one distance. So if the stargate is doing something with angles the six symbols would be "angle, angle, distance, angle, angle distance" to describe two spherical coordinates. It wouldn't be "angle, distance, angle, distance, angle, distance" to describe three circles. Could referencing two spheres make sense for anything though? Hm... Mechanism for precision, perhaps? Two different AUs, one large scale and one small scale. First sphere goes out away from your origin point some multiple of the large AU, and then second sphere goes out from that location some multiple of the small AU.
Technically given the explanation of how the coordinate system works, It shouldn't matter about the order except that each symbol needs a pairing one ( Excluding the point of origin ), ie symbols 1& 2 are the X coordinate 3&4 are the Y and 5&6 the Z or something like that, but which is considered a pair by the system is a arbitrary choice made by the creators, symbols 1&4 2&5 3&6 could have seemed correct to them.. that is a convention of the system rather than anything else, likewise the point of origin is only the last one because that's how the builders of the gate decided thats how it makes good sense, They could have as easily made the point of origin the first symbol.. there are exceptions for some shall we say non standard addresses though As the address is also / more of a code.

Glad to see you guys reacting to SG-1. SG-1 is one of my favorite sci-fi shows, with Babylon 5 and DS9 being the other two.
I think Jeff is going to have a lot of fun with SG-1 and I'm really glad that you're combining your reactions with your commentary.
Edit: Also, Enemy Within is one of my favorite Rush songs.
Oh Yes! This is gonna be a great journey. For this, you guys can stay at my place! Loved it. I can't wait for next weeks episode. 65 for life.
I do enjoy the podcast mixed with the reaction format. Love that you started this series,, very excited to see more.
More to come!
Soo happy you started this this is by far my favorite series, enjoy 5he show jeff and hopefully atlantis too need to ride this train all the way
No catchphrases for Carter?? but who else is going to "with all due respect sir, this is an extremely advanced piece of technology" their way through 10 seasons??
Ya know I was kindof thinking of doing an SG1 rewatch anyways so this is great news, I can just watch along with you guys each week :)
Great!
first time watching the channel! And probably the 65th time iv watched stargate :)
Nicely done
47th time, Brent? Those are rookie numbers. Gotta pump up those numbers.
🎉🎉🎉 I've been excited about this since Brent first brought the series up! Stargate is absolutely in my top 5 sci fi shows. I am SO excited to relive these episodes! I first watched the series between 2010 and 2011 on SciFi as reruns.
Love this!
This takes place in Cheyenne Mountain. The headquarters of NORAD and where the US military ran the cold war until recently.
Lol, you're watching the shows in my original 'back in the day' order... TNG to B5 to SG1 (and Buffy).
I never realised that Brad Wright really loved Trek till I saw his tweet to Terry Matalas... its changed my view of some scenes and now Im sentimentally even more attached to SG1.
And General Hammond is the greatest commanding officer in Sci-Fi. Bar None.
Completely unrelated, the British have a snack known as a Jaffa cake. Real popular in Stargate memes.
18:49 for me this never gets old
I am insanely excited for this! I've so enjoyed the B5 watch, and I love SG1 so much. Can't wait to hear the magic. (Side note, there's a Podcast called "There's No Place Like Terra" which is a Stargate first watch/rewatch podcast, which is fantastic if either of you want to connect with that. They just finished the whole show through SGU.)
This was a fun episode and a good start to a long-lived series. I am sad though that Jeff has this episode in the bottom slot so far. But I guess 1st and last don't matter much when there is only one slot so far. I really hope I enjoy this series just as much as I do now, even when I am 65.
Let's goooo! Enjoyed following your B5-journey and I'm sure I'll enjoy following you into SG1-universe as well. And personally I like much more podcasts/reactions/reviews where one of the hosts in familiar with the show. It just adds so much to discussion and also clears any little misunderstandings that may occur.

Glad to see you reacting to SG-1.
Unlike B5 where I have watched the DVD's numerous times.
I've only relay watched this when it aired, so this will be quire the rewatch for me as well.
Looking forward to joining you on this journey, and relay appreciate the watch along format.
Two other games you can play: Counter for every time Teal'c says "Indeed", and refernences to the Wizard of Oz.
Holy Hannah, Homer !
The really refreshing thing about SG1 as time went on was that it was an episodic show when every other thing was going arc based. I really miss that in today's 'TV' landscape.
Soon you are going to have to do a 3rd show just so the reference sound can be Teal'C saying "Indeed" !
I have a friend who looks vaguely like him and when I text him things he likes to send an audio reply saying 'Indeed'
65 lol, I do enjoy this show... and SG1 is pretty awesome to. Actually I think the first time I tried to watch SG1 I thought it was kind of dumb. but then when I watched it in order fell in love with it.
65 happy to see this starting! Jeff gets it!
Great episode. Great reaction. I am shocked and haopy how well Jeff was able to catch everything
65 so glad to have a new show to follow along on. Unlike B5 which I have lost count of rewatches I have only rewatched sg1 a few times. Great show definitely not same level of Sci fi but still a great show. Going to see if I can find a way to watch along this time.
Glad you enjoy it!
Welcome to Stargate, Jeff!
It's an excellent and fun ride.

Be seeing you
SG-1 was more about entertainment then most sci-fi shows that often times have those messages (not that it doesn't have them also) and it doesn't necessarily have messages in episodes (though as Brent said those episodes do exist) or even in seasons. But it has them from the show as a whole. Little things add up over time delivers the messages kind of thing. It comes just from characters interactions with eachother and with tge evolution of the story universe as a whole. Some fallow/live those messages in the show and others don't and the results coming from those actions over time deliver those messages.
Appreciate the Spaceballs song break ! ❤
Jeff! How is a sci-fi fan like you not watched any Stargate at all??? Well, this should be very interesting. I would consider SG-SG1 top 5 sci-fi off all time.
Crashing through the sky
Comes a fearful cry
Cobra! (Cobra!!!) Cobra! (Cobra!!!)
Serpentor the big bad
This is one i actually have never watched....i had no idea that it had 10 seasons. I may have to watch it
Do it
Just watched the movie and Children of the Gods. I think it is promising @@Babylon5FortheFirstTime
10+5+2: SG-1+SGA+SGU. All very worthwhile though personally I think seasons 1-8 in SG-1 are the best, and SGA season 1, SGU season 2.
Great start and for me a cool way to see moments from one of my favorite shows again. Thank you both for doing this 👍
Also ... 65
I'm gonna be 65 before you guys are done with this show.
The scene in the pilot episode where the Death Glider shows up to rain death and destruction like they did in the movie - only to get knocked down by a guy with a MANPAD launcher - just about sums up the tone of this show for me. Stargate is what happens when our heroes don't know they're in a sci-fi/alien invasion film, and SG1 is what happens once they figure it out and prepare accordingly.
23:10 Correction to your fun fact- They were never married, they just dated for a couple years and had a daughter. Michael Shanks married Lexa Doig (seen later in S9-S10) in 2003.
Fair enough
Well, time to finally rewatch Stargate
Holy crap! You guys have started on SG1?
I'm almost caught up to you guys on B5 with the rewatch I'm doing with someone who's watching for the first time herself! Just watched 4x05 and 4x06 last night
We were gonna do Farscape next, but may have to change course and do SG1 instead so we can watch it in time with you guys...or might just wait till there's enough of a back catalog that we don't have to wait and only do 1 episode a week.
But either way we go, I'm gonna be watching you guys go through this one as well!
Jeff! I can't wait for you to see Kratos, MacGyver, and friends kicking butt across the galaxy.
aah yes that scene 31:00 . I think i saw it for the first time after i started buying the series it came with the scene still completely in there. 14 year old me was very happy with that scene.
I love stargate and hope you get to love it to. In my opinion the best thing about it from a story perspective is that you see the Humans in the series grow and sometimes get call backs to old episode. cant say much more since it might be spoilery if i went into huge detail.
Cheyenne Mountain Complex is a real place in Colorado, who knows what's really in there though.🤫
They put the StarGate Command logo on a janitor's closet door.
The exterior is Cheyenne Mountain home of NORAD until not too long ago (some of NORAD is still there but they moved a lot of the departments and functions to other places in the last decade or two).
Babylon 5 podcast, which is not a Star Trek podcast, that is doing a Stargate podcast! Wonderful! :D
23:09 No Michael Shanks and Vaitiare Bandera are not and were never married in real life but were in a relationship for some time and have a daughter together. Michael has been married to Lexa Doig since 2003 who he met while starring in Andromeda
wormhole x-treme! :D
I was so hoping for 66, but 65 it is again :D
Michael Shanks married Lexa Doig from Andromeda. They're still married like 20 years later. They explain the poor aim too.
And she came in during the last 2 years of SG1. He just couldn’t get away from having his wife at the time on set
Hollywood marriages might not last but Vancouver marriages do.
Michael Shanks is married to Lexa Doig as already mentioned, Although Shanks does have a child from a relationship with Vaitiare Bandera who played Sha're. But they never married. At least according to a quick Google search, As i was a bit confused by that comment in the reaction 😄 .
Haven't watched the B5 stuff in a while. Been so busy w/ blind school - shld grad this month - & just started an internship w/ a disability advocacy group. Hope to be a college freshman at 39 yrs old in the fall. Eventually want to go to law school.
Even w/ all that I want to see you guys go thru this. From the start this time. Want to see if Brent will spoil anything. He kind of said a thing or 2 I think you guys asked us not to say in B5.
Let Jeff make those connections himself, Brent!
Good luck in school!
Loved it going to try and watch them all when it first comes out but in the time being going over to watch your b5 stuff xxx
First off mad props for the Dreamscape reference. It just dawned on me hearing you talk about it, with the Jaffa, is putting your baby inside your soldiers really the best way to keep it safe?
No, but that is deliberate. For reasons that will be revealed (much?) later.
Making the soldiers hyper dependant upon the ruling class, where they littleraly can not live without them, means a military cuop is 100% impossible.
Great idea. What about The Expanse for the First Time?
Or something shorter: Dark for the First Time.
Already a fan of the pod and now you watch my favorite scifi show

It's kinda funny that the makers of the original movie hate the show so much since the fans almost universally agree that the show improves on the movie.
If you watched McGyver you should know who the General is as he was a regular player for various roles in McGyver. With the gate it kinda takes half the show playing star trek TOS, visiting a new world half the time using the gate instead of a starship.
Everytime someone brings up something to do with MacGyver - all I can ever think of is that blooper where Sam is just screaming at Jack "But your MacGyver for christ sake, MACGYVER!" lol
@@LordLOC that Bloober is one of the best I've ever seen, on par with the greatness of the 1997 Berserk dub bloopers.
they also explain why they shoot like storm troopers in a later episode
I just watched the new series The Teal'c Chronicles, it's impressive. 🔥
14:20 Necropsy. An autopsy is a post mortem medical exam when the one doing the exam and the one being examined are the same species.
So far, as far as we know, humans are the only species who perform exams of this nature, so for humans it is autopsy because the examiner will be human. Should we ever make physical contact with other inelegant species then a dead human will be the subject of a necropsy if the alien is performing the exam.
And if that examiner then inspects a member of its own species, then that would be an autopsy.
I feel like Autopsy's meaning might just expand to any invasive post-mortum examination of a sapient organism.
Similar to how anthropology might apply to studying alien cultures, despite "anthro-" meaning man or man-like.
It’s great to see intelligent people react to sci-fi.
Hi Guys. Back for another shared adventure. Last cheveron locked. Let's go.
There was a Stargate novel that was a sequel to the original movie, but came out before the show was even an idea. No idea if it was part of what Emmerich had planned, but I don't think so.
In that novel Ra from the movie was the only alien and his empire was made up of humans. However those humans had access to a lot of Ra's advanced technology and as humans those in power liked to be in power and on top. All in all it was a great setup for a show, but in many ways completely different to Stargate SG1.
Did you not have your friend watch the movie first?
Enjoy the ride, but you have to watch Farscape sometime as it's an absolute head#@£+
It’s in the queue
Preferrably before season 10 of SG1 :-)
I really liked Gen Hamond. AKA Hamond of Texas.
Kurt Douglas lol...
Yeah, I caught that on the edit. Oops
@@Babylon5FortheFirstTimeDon't worry, It was epic.. It's not just how polished something is that makes it good, It's also the bloopers. Gives proceedings some extra soul & character 😄👍
I rate this with a 65
I love that we are finally tackling this series but at the same time I love the formula of B5 FTFT. I feel like Jeff watches should be the same pre game workout for SG1 that Brent watches is for B5. The all in one take feels a bit rushed.... But I'ma watch it tho 😊

Welcome to the journey!
O´Neill calls them Gulds. It started when RDA did not care about the show but when he met fans and found out how much they cared he built up a backstory that his character does know how to say it properly but messes it up on purpose as disrespect to the enemy.
I had a couple history teachers in the late 90s that employed that tactic when discussing modern dictators. It was effective.
Can we get some kind of update on what's going on with this series? It's been almost two weeks and there's been no response on Twitter.
Hey there. Sorry for that. We had some issues with our editing computer this week. Enemy Within is out now and Emancipation should be out soon.
@@Babylon5FortheFirstTime Thank you for the reply.

Brent, Spoiler's! The show explains jack's sons death later... 😂
It was brought up in the film.
I know. It’s ok here though. We aren’t belaboring the no spoiler rule for SG1 as we are for B5

Sha're (Vaitiare Hirshon) had a daughter (Tatiana Shanks) with Michael Shanks but was not married to him. Shanks's only wife is Lexa Doig.
Fair
I started watching SG-1 in the mid 2000's after it moved from Showtime. I have the DVD box set, but I never do a complete watch thru like I have done with Babylon 5. I only watch the episodes I think are good. I really think the spin-off Stargate Atlantis (SGA) was a better show.
Wait till they get to the episode titled "The Other Guys" season 6 episode 8 😅
