Years ago when I drove I had some bad times. 911 was bad this country shut down for 30 plus days. I worked for 6 weeks without a paycheck. I only paid my truck payment and fuel running cost. and managed to eat that time almost pulled me under. I stayed with a good company and got through it.
I was OTR with prime and at one point, I was in West Memphis AR and was offered some shit butterball load when I knew there were high paying Tyson loads in this region. After denying 3 loads that were shit in that area, I told my dispatcher I was deadheading to Little Rock and he was pissed. Guess what? 10 minutes later I got a high paying 3 stop Tyson load going to Texas..that ended up laying me over afew days lol. But knowing the freight lanes in this game is crucial. I'd check the spot market load boards aswell as Prime's logistics board in your general vicinity to see what rates are coming out of where for reefer and make a decision of where to deadhead based off previous experience with prime's customers. Not something you need permission to do.
Work on getting your authority so you don't have to play games with the carrier. Sounds too me like you're getting screwed for turning down cheap loads
WOULD NOW IN LATE OCTOBER OF 2023 BE A GOOD TIME TO START A LEASE PURCHASE WITH PRIME?? IS THERE ENOUGH FREIGHT AND ENOUGH LOADS FOR A NEW GUY BARLEY COMING INTO PRIME? IS THE MARKET STILL IN A VERY BAD PLACE AS FAR AS PRIME IS CONCERNED? SHOULD I STAY COMPANY WHERE I AM? I’ve been wanting to go lease at prime for a long time but I’ve been in the industry for 2 years and the market has hit rock bottom and I don’t see it recovering, I see many more drivers coming in, and I also see more and more recessions coming due to the Biden administration making horrible policies
It’s a recession. Things will come back around when the government inevitably does a bail out for consumers and banks. Congress will likely bring back stimulus checks eventually too, instead of face a 2008 style crisis. I don’t think that’s a good idea by the way-it will make inflation come back with a vengeance. But it will at least be good for rates and the trucking industry as a whole.
So if you stay parked because of no loads your lease can be repo’d because you can’t make the tractor payment? Sounds like the industry can just bankrupt O/O or lease operators at will.
Most drivers don’t want to go to Florida generally because freight NEVER pays well coming out, as for running the west, I’d imagine it’s due to the fuel cost being higher in the west and the mountains slowing you down and killing your fuel economy. Just my guess.

I use to be in Prime, leasing it's the worst, every week you need to make the payment, if you go on vacation the payment its due, the training get paid from your effort Prime get free new driver, you can't go to a different load board. If you get fired Prime stop paying for the lease, until another driver lease the truck again then the payment start over again at the end the prime get the benefit, the Truck is paid off Prime can just sale the truck for a profit. Getting your Authority is the way to go right now, you can get a good Truck your payment is monthly $1200 to $1700 depending what truck miles you get.
