- Hi everyone, welcome back to #songsfromhome Episode 9: Chasing What’s Already Gone
We are nearly a month into posting these little song videos from the farm, thanks to everyone for continuing to tune in and also for spreading the word... If all they do is bring a smile and allow a moment’s respite from the hard news of the day, then I’ve accomplished what I set out to do, which was to be useful in some way. Thank you for helping me do that.
If you’re like me, you’ve been spending a lot of time thinking of what the future will look like; our lives, our world has been forever altered, and the only thing we can control is how we respond… how we will adjust to whatever it ends up being and what it ends up asking of all of us is an unknown for now. But even in these early days, the examples of people's selflessness, courageous giving and service to others, even in the face of personal loss, are everywhere, and these are the ones who lift all of us up.
To use the word again, may we all be so useful.
But I keep on rolling and I hope I’ve learned
more of what’s right than what’s wrong
it’s ashes and roses and time that burns
when you’re chasing what’s already gone
On a less somber note, earlier this week we got a call from the BBC World service, asking if I would sing a song from the kitchen for the late evening news - they especially asked if Angus and White Kitty could make an appearance. For those who wondered, Angus was lying on my foot the entire time, so I was pinned to my spot and WK turned her back on most of the proceedings. They were not impressed but I was delighted to say hello to everyone up late...anyone who knows me is well aware of my love for all things British, the Beeb and that I wear my Honorary Brit imaginary pin with pride.

I love the irony that one of thee greatest songwriters and wordsmiths of my lifetime names her cat, White Kitty.

There was once a song about a cat named dog. A minor pop hit in 1966.

My wife and I attended about 7 or 8 concerts by MCC in the Philadelphia area from Atlantic City to the Philly Folk Fest to our small theater in Sellersville. Her music is wonderful and Chapin is a beautiful person. It’s a privilege to see her in person. And these home bound concerts show us what a beautiful person she really is. She’s sheds a little light on dark times. Thank you!
Mary, I can’t even tell you how much your music means to me. Ashes and Roses was already my favorite album of yours, but when I lost my husband and best friend to cancer a year and a half ago, that album came to mean even more to me. I’m a 27-year-old widow with an old soul, and when I listen to your music I know I am hearing the heart of a kindred spirit. Thank you for sharing your beautiful songs with us during such a challenging time!

I'm the same age. Old soul. Recently lost my brother and mother and grew up on her music. I find myself listening to songs I used to scream at the top of my lungs with mom and now? Its almost like mom introduced me to country music's most real, badass artist to help me through current times. Stay strong 💜 we'll get through this.

I went to high school with Shawn and remember during breaks at lunch between classes singing harmonies with her as she entertained all of us. My background was country and I sang all of the traditional country, but I loved adding that little twist to her unique and beautiful voice, as she tried to find the songs we both knew...I knew even then, that she, like you, had a God given genius for music. Shawn, at that time, was just beginning to introduce herself and her music to the local community where we lived. Great memories I have from way back in the day. To put this in perspective for you: I celebrated my 50th Birthday 18 years ago in the ICU of a local hospital recovering from a "sudden death" heart attack and almost miraculously surviving. This time of fear and lockdown brings me back to an old love: music. Time to revisit old favorites and find new ones. This new favorite (thank you) reminds me of my childhood home, now remodeled into a matchbox, its lush green trees razed by the new chatelaine- a spiritual twin of Cruella de Vil. “Chasing” could be a sad song, but the major chords and melody are saving graces. Chapin is sticky. Her bittersweet turns of phrase lighten my days. We are not alone in the fight.

Enjoying your songs as always. Having listened to several artists perform from home, I am still blown away by how great your guitar sounds and the mix with your vocal.
