The first Irish saints (before Saint Patrick!!)

  • The information for this video comes from the earliest sources on these saints. From the Orthodox Christian perspective, there is an attitude of trust and respect to hagiographies and history. The distrust of history is something that has always been a feature of Gnostic heresies, past and present. If you research the saints mentioned in this video, and any other saint for that matter, you will probably find so-called "scholars" casting doubt on early sources and inventing a myriad of innovative theories or alternate versions (it is not irrelevent to add that being innovative is to the benefit of their reputations and bank accounts!). I am aware of many of these modern re-interpretations and reject them in favour of believing the early sources. One key issue is the many miracles that are in hagiographies. Of course, from the paradigm of atheism, miracles are fictions. However, in the Orthodox view, saints can perform miracles and still do even in modern times. Therefore the presence of miracles in the hagiographies does not make an Orthodox Christian doubt other aspects of the hagiography whereas for an atheist it does make them doubt. This should make it clear why the paradigm of the reader will greatly influence the level of trust they have in certain sources which will in turn shape their understanding of history.
This is a video presentation of this specific post on my blog. It is here that the hagiographies can be found that I mentioned in the video:
