Irish Ortodoxa
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 28 ต.ค. 2019
This is the TH-cam channel attached to the linked blog (irishortodoxa.wordpress.com/). The main topic is Irish Christian history from the Orthodox Christian perspective. This is something I am researching for my own interest and to share with others. I am very open to questions, objections, recommendations, etc., on this subject. Feel free to comment or send me an email (rmcquillan93@hotmail.co.uk).
If you live in Northern Ireland and are interested in Orthodoxy, I recommend visiting 'St. John of Shanghai, Belfast'. It is a ROCOR parish. Their website is here: stjohnofshanghaibelfast.org/

There are 13 sermons of Saint Columbanus, each filled with wisdom, zeal and eloquence. One of the noteworthy features is the quoting of passages from the Old and New Testament which flow into the words of Saint Columbanus himself. This shows his profound knowledge of the Bible and the way in which he had incorporated its message into his own pattern of thought and speech. Later sermons sometime...

Saint Columba of Iona... and the Loch Ness Monster??
มุมมอง 6952 ปีที่แล้ว
It is routinely said that Saint Columba of Iona encountered the Loch Ness Monster although the passage in the 'Life of Columba' is normally not included when making this assertion (indeed I have never seen it quoted alongside this assertion). It appeared to me that there were significant discrepancies between the monster that Saint Columba encountered in the RIVER Ness and the much later (over ...

There is a belief locally in Keel, Glenderry, Ballyheigue, Co.Kerry that Erc had a house there. There is the ruin of a tiny church there and a mound in a field that’s believed to have been his house .
Gotta cop myself this Book when I get the money to do so. Looking in the description to save the link now. God bless and keep you on your Journey. Its cool tou were baptized by Father Spyridon Bailey. I love the Content on his TH-cam channel.

Seriously who even titles was St Patrick really Orthodox? This is like the Roman Catholic church in revision trash. YES he is Orthodox.
Just ordered my copy. Looking forward to reading it here in Idaho.
i hope one day that ireland forms "irish orthodox church"
is there anywhere i can find an orthodox church in ireland?
Yes there are quite a few. Most of the bigger cities have more than one.
Where in ireland are you living? I go to one in galway but I know outhers well.

It looks amazing! I forwarded this video to priests I know. I believe western saint will be pivotal in the evangelization of the west and the americas, they are more relatable to some of us. It would be nice to have a similar work done for hispanic saints (I live in hispanc america).
Thanks very much and I absolutely agree. There is a lot to learn about the first millennium in Spain and I have read some of the lives of the Spanish saints from then and might well write about it eventually.
Looking forward to reading it soon. 👍
I've found that if your delivery is ROI then you actually have to buy off .es or .de and so I have added those links into the description
Looks great Rory! I just followed the link to order and it says it's currently out of stock. I'm in Dublin so maybe I could use a more local method either but maybe some box on Amazon just needs filled out. Really looking forward to reading.
This is unfortunately happening because Amazon thinks there will be little demand. Buy it if you can and it will arrive eventually, sooner the more demand there is, and if not at least add it to basket and try again later. Worst case scenario if this isn't resolved after some time then contact me (details in about section on my channel) and I can send it in the post.
Actually this might be a different issue but I think it is all solved now. For people in the Republic of Ireland they will need to buy it off different links which I have added to the description now.
Done! Thanks Rory, can't wait to read!

I was fascinated to learn that Irish and Scottish monks were some of the first Christians to convert the pagan Anglo-Saxon to Christianity. Prior to 1066 the Christianised Anglo-Saxons had very close ties with both Ireland and Scotland, either through royal marriages or religious training.
Yes, Iona and Lindisfarne were the most important monasteries in that regard

St Patrick believed the Filioque and papal primacy in line with Nivea and Constantinople 1 meaning he was Catholic
Are you aware of the development of the term Filioque and what Saint Maximus and Saint Photius said about Filioque in the writings of Western European saints? As for being under the jurisdiction of Rome, this is what we would expect in the 5th century, long before there was any controversy about papal primacy.
I love this Channel! God Bless Irish Ortodoxa ☦️

And Saint Brigid was a real Christian woman.
Noticed also this passage in Columbas life. I think those water monsters in lives of the saints were dinosaurs. Have you seen scientific evidence that humans and dinosaurs coexisted?
I've read about questions raised about the accuracy of the methods of dating bones. It is very dependent on prior worldview.

I was looking exactly for the refutation of neopagan/modernist claims about St. Brigid and this was the only video I found. Thank you!
Have you done more research on this since this video?
Yes, I've read the books by Siecienski and Papadakis. It really helped my understanding of the Filioque. I've read some of the works of Saint Isidore as well.

According to an article by Hieromonk Enoch after he researched the issue, the earliest acts of the council don't have the filioque in it. The article is called Tampering with the AD 589 acts of toledo and the filioque: a centuries old slander.
Where is that article
As someone who has been thinking about converting to catholicism this is really helpful. When I saw videos saying she was a godess turned saint it made me extremely nervous and scared that I might have made the wrong decision in choosing to convert. Thank you for this
Look into converting to Orthodox Christianity instead, my friend.
Thank you for making this video our Orthodox brother. Very interesting. Thank you for clarifying on the subject of St. Columba of Iona and the USO (unidentified swimming object). USOs are actually much more commonly reported by the U.S, European, and Japanese navies than most people are aware. Eco location from large unidentified animals such as the "bloop", (could it be the Leviathan?) are also recorded. As for what the Aquatic Beast that came in from the ocean into the River Ness, it could have been a monster fish, a zeuglodon, or elasmosaurus? We may never know. I don't really think the Loch Ness Monster exists because it's capitalized upon, and since St. Columba didn't encounter Nessie, I don't think we need to believe in it. However, one could believe in Nessie if he or she wants, it's not a sin. For the Unicorn (Re'em) of the Holy Bible, those were rhinoceros unicornis, diceros bicornis, and possibly the elasmotherium sibiricum. There were no horses with narwhal horns on their heads historically. That comes out of the fabled one horned ass. In regards to the dragons mentioned in ancient and modern histories, zoological treatises, and synaxarions-I know they were real. I'm convinced that 55% eyewitness accounts of dragons were demons taking a hideous form to scare people. 49% of eyewitness accounts of dragons were dinosaurs, pterosaurs, marine reptiles, and other extinct reptiles that were hunted to extinction. I didn't believe in dinosaurs at first, but I saw so many archeological and historical evidences of dinosaurs and men coexisting coupled with paleontological evidence, that now I believe God created dinosaurs and mammoths. I believe that they were in the Garden of Eden, that they were on Noah's Ark, and were killed by men. As for the behemoth, "behemoth" is a transliteration from Hebrew into English, and comes from the Hebrew word "behemas", meaning beasts (plural). God could have been talking about Satan, or an unidentified creature. Leviathan probably was a marine reptile like the Kronosaur. If I remember correctly, Father Seraphim Rose believed that the dinosaur fossils were real, and proof the Great Flood. However, it's been a long time since I read it, and I could be wrong.
Thank you for your comment. I recently wrote about dragons in Western European pre-Schism sources which you can find on the blog.
@@IrishOrtodoxa Thank you for telling me, but which blog may I ask?

From Coptic Orthodox church, Egypt.
I'm sorry but the Coptics are schismatic......
Do Coptic Christians typically use Statues/Idols of Pagan Kings as their profile pic? May I curiously ask “is this how the Coptics honor and revere Christ? “ do you serve a pagan king or is Christ your king? Coptic Bishops approve of this? Cus this would not be appropriate in Eastern Orthodoxy or as follower of Jesus Christ.
Sorry Homie, from what I can tell, the Copts are not in communion with the Rest of the Orthodox Church. None of the Oriental Churches are in communion with us.
Subscribed! Thank you for sharing this important history.
So interesting! Had to watch a few times. I heard someone recently say that St Athanasius of Alexandria visited Ireland on one of his exiles but I haven't been able to find any other source. He did go to Gaul at least twice though, adding to the Egyptian influence in the 4th Century.
That's great, I've never read his life or writings but heard his name many times! Your comment makes me curious to learn more about him. He wrote 'Life of Saint Anthony' which was also very influential all around the Christian world like 'Sayings of the Desert Fathers' was so definitely Saint Athanasius is an important figure in this Egypt-->Gaul-->Ireland connection.
@@IrishOrtodoxa Yes he also wrote "On The Incarnation", which is the only one of his works I have read but it bears reading and re-reading. I recommend it. Not very long and easily accessed online. And of course his whole life including 5 exiles was greatly affected by his battle against the Arian heresy so he was very important in the shaping of our entire church. It would be really cool if he had visited our land but I suspect maybe the person who said that picked it up wrong. Maybe though.
You mentioned an Arabic inscription as proof of Egyptian contact in this video, which confused me a little. Didn’t the Egyptians speak (and write) Coptic rather than Arabic at this time? Otherwise interesting video
Yeah the Ballycotton Brooch is dated at 8th/9th century so after the Islamic invasion of Egypt and the Egyptian Christians would have been bilingual (Coptic and Arabic) at that time.
@@IrishOrtodoxa Ah I see
There is debate among scholars whether these inscriptions were not merely traded goods and don't really suggest communities of Egyptians, etc settled in Ireland. In general the current thinking (based on the popularity of Isidore's writings) is thay what we see is a transmission of ideas, not people, from North Africa to Ireland via Seville and Tour as you suggest. The early liturgy in Ireland, apparently reflecting a Gallic rite, shows evidence of Gallic and possibly Hispanic influences, but nothing from North Africa. There was, obviously, a very strong Roman influence (not least because the liturgical language was Latin), which came via Britian and also Gaul.
@@lukemcinerney7458 yeah definitely I think that it is principally an inspiration of the spirit of Egyptian monasticism and they didn't necessarily need to go to Egypt or have Egyptians come to them to be inspired by that. I would like to learn more about the impact of Saint Isidore and also the early liturgies but can't say I know much about that now.
