As a creator I understand your title and stance of the video. However, there is a point that you did not consider. When I order this camera I will be using it as a vlogging camera that is waterproof that can record audio. If I was wanting a camera to use with my 3-axis gimbal the 4 silver is an obvious choice. If I am looking for a camera to use while filming fishing while paddle boarding, the session is the obvious choice. Again, I understand the title and and the stance. Just be sure to cover all points of view.

For the size of this camera it does a great job and you can't expect too much from something half the size as the hero silver 4 but for my needs the camera is great and for the audio recording it is better being outside the case and also in stereo.

My wife and I ATV year round, sometimes in the rain, snow, or very wet environments. All of the other GP models have a tendency to fog up in waterproof cases even with moisture evaporation pads inside the case. I have multiple Hero 3+ Blacks, multiple 4 Silvers, and multiple Sessions. The Session is by far the best solution for me for the purpose that "I" need it for. It is rugged, waterproof, small as heck and has good audio recording. The Hero 3+ Black is the perfect solution for use on our helmets with the Sena Bluetooth backpack paired with the Sena communicators. The 4 Silvers are the goto for everything else. For those of us who need an action camera that is waterproof and can record decent audio - the session is a good solution for us.
U said the session is waterproof to 10 meters, which is less than the others. Correction: The session is the only camera that is actually waterproof. The other ones needs a housing case
Poor review. Users have different applications. This camera is perfect for snowboarding as well as surfing. Don't always believe what you see/hear on TH-cam!
I've had every single GoPro camera that GoPro has came out with (black editions in the color options), and this is one of my favorite GoPro's by far. It's only $199 now and totally worth it for the new price of $199!

Hi there I came across your video review of the hero Session when I saw the title don't buy I thought I would have to have a peek. First of all I am a quadriplegic and Originally Bought the Hero Silver 4 many months ago and found it good. Then earlier this year had broken my leg and a local train station and had the silver with me connected to my table on my wheelchair. I turned it off on the train and when I came back through the station the gates were have been closed premature which consequently broke my leg. I was going to buy another silver to use for travel purposes for security and then comes along the hero session. I found it invaluable as it is easy to turn on for recording and contrary to your recording times I had both camera set on the same settings recently and the hero session lasted half an hour longer may be more than the silver. I have the recording lights turned off on both cameras. I have since bought a second one was I prefer it much more than the silver. There are drawbacks yes but for the size of it more can you expect compared to the silver. It does do a great recording. If you are a high end user of course I would go for the silver or the black but as I said it seemed to record longer and for the size of it it does a great job so you can't expect too much also the audio recording is better than the silver with stereo microphones and outside the case compared to the silver. Ahh, again, I must disagree with your very biased opinion about the GoPro Session. For the money it's actually a damned nice little camera. Yes, the resolution isn't nearly as robust as the Hero 4 Black or Silver, but you are truly getting what you pay for. The image quality is beautifully but not over saturated, with well balanced color throughout. It handles well, is nicely responsive, but slow to boot. All in all, the time-lapse photography works extremely well and the image quality is broadcast acceptable. The burst mode is wonderful and works extremely well for what it's designed to do, nothing wrong with that. It shoots just OK in low light, but it could be improved on. But for what my wife got mine for, it's perfectly acceptable. The little unit has a nice and wide array of different settings for different shooting conditions, although I doubt that I'll use the old style 4:3 mode since most of my filming is in wide angle, HD nowadays... The 2 button feature could actually be improved upon, but with the free software available for any gopro unit, it more than compensates for the lacking buttons on the unit. Although the programming is somewhat sluggish and a bit slow, making it a little cumbersome, it actually does rather well. Eventually as I have time and money, I will be buying a second and perhaps, a third Hero 4 Session GoPro to carry on and build upon my filming experience with this remarkable little unit. It is a little worrisome that the battery cannot be changed or upgraded, and the battery life is a real drawback for anyone doing some serious filming because the batteries are builtin, making swapping batteries a moot point. However, the workaround for that problem is rather simple if you're willing to sacrifice the waterproof door and keep it open to the USB & memory card. I discovered that the battery life is considerably extended when I hook up a battery charging unit for smartphones. The Session can still be powered up and actually will draw its power from the external battery, thus increasing the battery's staying power 3fold. With a 64 gig memory card I can increase recording time to 4 hours instead of 2 with a 32 gig card. I am really enjoying getting to know my new gopro 4 session that my wife bought me for Christmas. I'm not too keen on your review of this unit and feel that it is not a fair assessment of this unit. For people who want to just buy a gopro but don't want to spend the money to buy the more expensive or versatile units, this one works perfectly for their needs. Furthermore, its simplicity and ease of use makes it attractive to the average user who enjoys filming and shooting videos. Its waterproof ability is a definite plus and a huge advantage to any videographer/photographer. I strongly feel that if you are going to offer critique and information about a product as the session, then do so honestly and try not to offer your personal and biased opinions. I think you do yourself and your viewers a disservice by giving rash and negative comments about something you may not like, but might be something that others have a great opinion about. Also, you may want to watch your audio levels in your video films. They tend to be far too hot and noisy, creating unpleasant commentary to listen to because the audio is popping, cracking and distorting. Believe me or don't, but I know what I'm talking about as a former radio broadcaster, broadcast engineer and radio operations director. I bought it for $179 at Target for Black Friday, and got a $20 gift card, a 16gb microSD card (woopie), and a stick (muh stick). I have a Hero4 Silver that I love - but I wanted a second camera to get whitewater video's of my daughter from my boat and hers at the same time.. If I'd have realized at 2am that this has only 2 hours of battery time on a non swappable battery then I probably would have passed on it. I have lots of GoPro batteries and chargers - and I make sure to rotate through them to keep them working well. I can't do that with this one... Unlike the reviewer - the video of mine seems indistinguishable from my silver - but I think the mic on the silver is clearer in an open case. I also use a remote mic a lot on my silver - there's no port for it on the session. I really like how small it is, so when my daughter wants to wear one on her motorcycle helmet I'll hand her this one for less buffeting. Scratching the lens isn't a concern anymore. Replacement lenses are $22, and tempered glass lens protectors are 3 for $7. So far the only concern I have is the battery life, and keeping the battery in good health.
While your review is good, you fail to understand this camera fits a certain need. The Hero4 Session IS NOT a replacement or for the Silver NOR is it suppose to compete with the Silver. Also, you should clarify the camera is $399 USD ($499 in Canada). I purchased this camera and I love it due to its portability and the picture quality is more than fine for most. People are not watching the majority of videos on 4K or 54" screens. This is a niche product meant to fit a niche need, and it does just that. Attempting to compare it to the Silver is comparing apples to oranges.

I have both cameras and use both the same. How is the picture quality? I obviously wanna use it for videos but if I want to take pictures too, is it good? Like how would photo quality be compared to a smartphone?
I just posted a video of footage with the video if you want to see it. I removed fish eye and did some image stabilization in post production which cut down on resolution and image quality. Raw video looks very good though for it's size
A piezo electrit speaker, is also a mic. A mic is just a tiny speaker at the end of the day. I used to use my earbuds as a mic when I couldnt find one.
Karl, (or anyone else who knows about GoPros) Now that the price of the camera is only $200, do you think it's a good buy? I agree for $400 and compared to the Silver it falls short...but at the new price point is it worth it?

Dood...speakers do not record sound.... microphones do. The size alone makes the Session a perfect helmet cam despite the drawbacks compared to the Hero3 Silver.
I love my session. I replaced the plastic housing with an aftermarket aluminum one and it's now pretty much bullet proof. Of course it doesn't have allot of the functions as the hero, BUT it's 1/4 the size. Works great for clipping onto hiking backpack for the trails. The only issue I have with it is the same as all gopros, their software SUCKS! Even more so with the session because In order to view live time what your looking at on the camera, you have to link it to the quick app which fails to open and connect about 50 percent of the time and it gets annoying really quick. But as far as the unit itself, I love it.
I really need your help. I have a porch pirate where I live. And I have been on the hunt for a small camera to catch the guy inside my apartments doing it. I believe its one of my neighbors. I know there is a 2 hour battery last on the 4. Does this camera have ANY delays? or does it record at every moment every motion? can I watch it on my phone or laptop while its hiding in my unit to catch the guy whiles it recording? if you could help me boy I need to know before I buy this. I have a question...with this gopro now being 150$ would you suggest it for that price? As well have you seen the Ecstapro hero4 battery extender? 1:45 mins record time to 4:45 mins with the extender. Im currently looking for a new camera, came across your video, began wondering if the lower price would justify it now as oppose to when you made this. Great video nontheless!
There's a glitch where the cam doesn't want to record anymore. I haven't looked into a fix.. but I think you should buy it off of someone for like $100
Try updating it, the firmware might help... Do listen to the BOZO that made this video, it's a very old review... I know about 5 big league Pro Surfers that are sponsored by GoPro and use it, they love it... And not just because there being paid, they make there living by filming themselves... So if it didn't make them look good and work right they would never use it... They would only use the Hero 4 Black... Take it from a pro surfing videographer, there great... I have all of them... So... The Hero session is $279 at the moment and the Silver is $560 here in Canada.. Would that make you recommend the session? I am on a limited budget and the point made was for the same price you get the Silver but for that much less is the session going to be a good camera?
gopro hero 4 session was my first camera and I haven't had any issues with it yet? for it's price point its pretty good for a camera with multiple different settings. i only paid 250 brand new
and the LCD screen u dont have on the hero? u can just use ur phone. so for helmet cam its better cuz u can adjust camera while look where its pointing on your phone!

So, now that the Session is $200, would it now be recommended? I am looking for something smaller for IPSC practice and competitions. I have the Hero4 Black, but one of the few places that I can mount it is on the side of my electronic earmuffs. The Hero4 Black is a little heavy mounted this way.
I have one since one month, I love it. It's the easiest most convenient to use, best for helmet use, best sound quality... and previous donw side (configuration only on app, and price) are corrected now.
Is the "session" camera worth having if it´s half price than the Hero 4 silver? Its like 2000:- (Swedish crowns) here now and the "Silver" costs double.
the session 4 is an acquired taste! I use it on my dirtbike it great because it fits nicely right under the visor on my helmet and when I race a 2 hour race it finishes the race with me no problem. it works better than other for me but like you said in most scenarios battery life and such does become an issue
GoPro Hero 4 Silver: two units, Hero 4 Black: one unit - all 3 cams had voice issue (helicopter noise) while WiFi is enabled. GoPro Hero 4 Session - clear great voice while WiFi or not. After many silver/blacks switched to Session + Remote 2.0 and In my opinion this is best solution (using for paragliding).
***** I do agree, the colors are nicer straight out of the camera from the sony, and their image stabilization is quite decent for what it does. Personally I'd rather go for the gopro because its color profile is flatter with protune, so a lot more can be done in post production. I can see why people go for the sony though.
now, that year has passed from the release of this video, hero 4 session costs about 220€ and hero 4 silver is still on around 400€, i think it is now a reasonable price

asx cost 99 bucks with a bunch of extras, and a built in screen, its right underneath the gopro 3+ for only 99 dollars on amazon. records 4k at 10 fps 2.7k at 15 fps. and 1080p at 60 or 30fps
They're good for FPV Quadcopters. The silver is good too, but those are bigger and bulky. Session sits right on the front very nicely when strapped on.
Yeah, I found it to be the same. I haven't tried another go pro but coming from my iPhone5s to the hero 4 session, seems a lot more fuzzy with the "Go-Pro". I don't understand if I should change the settings to get better pictures or if the lighting matters etc... Thanks for your review.

I love my Session 4 - Have made a ton of TH-cam videos with it mounted to the front of my seakayak, some during gale conditions, taking lots of salt water and wind. Continues to work fine 5 years later.
Its great if you just need a recording camera 1080p 30fps then this is for you! But if you are looking for tons of settings.. changing shutter speed more fps options and more it doesnt have. I wish i had know more about this before i bought it
Actually that's one of the most protective cases in the world btw it's also not a case it's mostly for the attachments and it's the best GoPro in its generation
I think there are no problems with it: if the battery is a problem just take an external battery and plug it in, the session is way smaller than the hero 4 silver what means you can stick it to a helmet without having to worry about hitting stuf as much (i'm talking about mountain biking) I really think it's awesome
The main reason I am looking into this GoPro is the un-obstructed microphone recording feature. You should probably do a little research on the product feature differences and do the review with that in mind.
Nice review Karl, this why I have a rule of never buying new electronics in it's first year after release, with that rule I can avoid bad products and if the product proves to be good I will likely be able to pick it up at a much lower price
Just my two bits. I have two of these for mounting on various places on my airplane and the one has really caused me some problems. The first video always seems to turn out fine, but when it goes to the second section and the following ones all the rest including the LRV and THM will not play but show as corrupted. (Ocx10100bf ). I have tried the GoPro Studio, Microsoft Media player and VLC video player with the same playback results.

Also, you should clarify the camera is $399 USD ($499 in Canada). I purchased this camera and I love it due to its portability and the picture quality is more than fine for most. People are not watching the majority of videos on 4K or 54" screens. This is a niche product meant to fit a niche need, and it does just that. Attempting to compare it to the Silver is comparing apples to oranges.

I just posted a video of footage with the video if you want to see it. I removed fish eye and did some image stabilization in post production which cut down on resolution and image quality. Raw video looks very good though for it's size

A piezo electrit speaker, is also a mic. A mic is just a tiny speaker at the end of the day. I used to use my earbuds as a mic when I couldnt find one.
As it's not used to play sound, it's not a speaker here, regardless of the time of the day. It's a microphone.

The size alone makes the Session a perfect helmet cam despite the drawbacks compared to the Hero3 Silver.
I love my session. I replaced the plastic housing with an aftermarket aluminum one and it's now pretty much bullet proof. Of course it doesn't have allot of the functions as the hero, BUT it's 1/4 the size. Works great for clipping onto hiking backpack for the trails. The only issue I have with it is the same as all gopros, their software SUCKS! Even more so with the session because In order to view live time what your looking at on the camera, you have to link it to the quick app which fails to open and connect about 50 percent of the time and it gets annoying really quick. But as far as the unit itself, I love it.
I really need your help. I have a porch pirate where I live. And I have been on the hunt for a small camera to catch the guy inside my apartments doing it. I believe its one of my neighbors. I know there is a 2 hour battery last on the 4. Does this camera have ANY delays? or does it record at every moment every motion? can I watch it on my phone or laptop while its hiding in my unit to catch the guy whiles it recording? if you could help me boy I need to know before I buy this. I have a question...with this gopro now being 150$ would you suggest it for that price? As well have you seen the Ecstapro hero4 battery extender? 1:45 mins record time to 4:45 mins with the extender. Try updating it, the firmware might help... Do listen to the BOZO that made this video, it's a very old review... I know about 5 big league Pro Surfers that are sponsored by GoPro and use it, they love it... And not just because there being paid, they make there living by filming themselves... So if it didn't make them look good and work right they would never use it... They would only use the Hero 4 Black... Take it from a pro surfing videographer, there great... I have all of them... gopro hero 4 session was my first camera and I haven't had any issues with it yet? for it's price point its pretty good for a camera with multiple different settings. i only paid 250 brand new

So, now that the Session is $200, would it now be recommended? I am looking for something smaller for IPSC practice and competitions. I have the Hero4 Black, but one of the few places that I can mount it is on the side of my electronic earmuffs. The Hero4 Black is a little heavy mounted this way.

the session 4 is an acquired taste! I use it on my dirtbike it great because it fits nicely right under the visor on my helmet and when I race a 2 hour race it finishes the race with me no problem. it works better than other for me but like you said in most scenarios battery life and such does become an issue

GoPro Hero 4 Silver: two units, Hero 4 Black: one unit - all 3 cams had voice issue (helicopter noise) while WiFi is enabled. GoPro Hero 4 Session - clear great voice while WiFi or not. After many silver/blacks switched to Session + Remote 2.0 and In my opinion this is best solution (using for paragliding).

***** I do agree, the colors are nicer straight out of the camera from the sony, and their image stabilization is quite decent for what it does. Personally I'd rather go for the gopro because its color profile is flatter with protune, so a lot more can be done in post production. I can see why people go for the sony though.

They're good for FPV Quadcopters. The silver is good too, but those are bigger and bulky. Session sits right on the front very nicely when strapped on.

If you get a portable charger it compensates for the built in battery and you can buy actually protective cases

I love my Session 4 - Have made a ton of TH-cam videos with it mounted to the front of my seakayak, some during gale conditions, taking lots of salt water and wind. Continues to work fine 5 years later.
Its great if you just need a recording camera 1080p 30fps then this is for you! But if you are looking for tons of settings.. changing shutter speed more fps options and more it doesnt have. I wish i had know more about this before i bought it

I got problems on this.. The Wifi Connection was lost in just few weeks.. I cannot control or monitored my shots using my mobile phone.
I think there are no problems with it: if the battery is a problem just take an external battery and plug it in, the session is way smaller than the hero 4 silver what means you can stick it to a helmet without having to worry about hitting stuf as much (i'm talking about mountain biking) I really think it's awesome
The main reason I am looking into this GoPro is the un-obstructed microphone recording feature. You should probably do a little research on the product feature differences and do the review with that in mind.

Nice review Karl, this why I have a rule of never buying new electronics in it's first year after release, with that rule I can avoid bad products and if the product proves to be good I will likely be able to pick it up at a much lower price
Just my two bits. I have two of these for mounting on various places on my airplane and the one has really caused me some problems. The first video always seems to turn out fine, but when it goes to the second section and the following ones all the rest including the LRV and THM will not play but show as corrupted. (Ocx10100bf ). I have tried the GoPro Studio, Microsoft Media player and VLC video player with the same playback results.
