Its wild how much this one soundtrack influenced RPGmaker and psychological RPG games for decades. Hot off of playthroughs of games like OMORI and Undertale, it's really clear how beloved this strange game was to many. Me, too.
Yume Nikki is such an interesting game. So many small details, so much story. It’s amazing how Kikiyama managed to do this completely without text, and only through symbolism. The art and designs are really unique. It’s almost like one of those pieces of abstract art made into a game. The soundtrack is also beautiful, the tiny loops fit perfectly with the theme of the game, and it’s almost like they’re meant to make the player lose track of time. One of my favorite games, for sure. Thanks for uploading, I love this.

I love this game! Like, say...the Mother series, or Silent Hill, it's the *atmosphere* that really gives this game its identity. The soundtrack is beautiful in the way that it manages to create the appropriate dreamlike feeling whilst adding a dark and sometimes lonely tone...without feeling too depressing, either. Wonderful music.
These tracks are so minimalistic yet I listened to them on repeat for literally hours. Mural World and The Docks in particular. I love how atmospheric they sound like, it's like being hypnotized into a surreal dream world.
I remember I played this game, and I can say is that it's a masterpiece. It has no words, no context, yet I understand so much, and there's a lot more to understand. It is absolutely amazing how the creator made such an interesting game. So dark, and mysterious.
This is my favorite kind of art. The art that speaks very directly to your spirit in ways far, far too complex for your conscious mind to understand. You don't know what it's trying to say, but you can FEEL it very strongly and you know it's resonating with something deep within you. It's like an Ivan Seal painting.
I'd like to personally thank you (seriously, I was obsessed with this game in my sophomore year, and it fills me with so much nostalgia to hear the OST that I feel like crying whenever I hear it ;w;)
i wasnt even looking for this video, i was just scrolling through youtube and accidently clicked on it by accident, i went back on the previous page and heard the first notes, i decided to come back to it and its really beautyful, thanks random mouse click
Haha well it's not really lucky to get it quickly either, since you don't expect it and it makes you a lot more jumpy. I actually got Uboa on my first time flipping that switch and I had no idea what the hell it was, and was refusing to go anywhere near that house. Until I researched the game I thought it was something that happened every time to everyone
My apologies for the lack of epilepsy warning. ! 17:28 has flashing images. ! 500k views today on 6/7/2021. (Sixth of July, I'm from Europe) Editing this video was quite tedious for me at the time, so I'm glad it worked out in the end. Though, at the time, I thought this would get at least about 60k views max since the soundtrack was already uploaded on youtube. Just not in a compilation like this one. Regardless, I'm happy that people get to listen to this for various reasons, such as sleeping, stress relief, nostalgia or just casual enjoyment.
Thank you so much for this. It is very well edited and it has been enjoyable the past few years since I stumbled upon this compilation. I am truly grateful.
Yume nikki, I finally figured out what this game is like. It’s telepathy. It’s very psychological. It actually reminds me of depression. It feels personal and like a work of art.
Music of the other starting worlds: Calm, melodic. Its a bit uneasy, but can give a sense of safety. Candle/Number World: *Spongebob taking 40 benadryls*
some of the songs in yume nikki are very peaceful and honestly make me want to fall asleep. and then the other half of the ost is very tense and gives me an overwhelming feeling. its not just the music, this game really is a masterpiece. such a small game for how much effect it put on me. i will forever keep this game in my heart and kikiyamas work
I love Yume Nikki so much. It might not have a 100% concrete plot line or lore, but I adore it regardless. The bright visuals, the amazing music, uncanny characters and environs, the *atmosphere!* Bless Kikiyama!
I don't have words to explain how much I adore and admire this game. It's a life-changing experience for sure! When you're by yourself alone in the dark, exploring all those different words that could've many (or no) meaning at all, it gives you goosebumps! By far one of the best game I've ever played in my life. When I found this game many years ago, I quickly tried to search information about its creator and when I found out they're alive, I immediately felt peace. I know I'll probably never meet this person in real life, let alone get some merch made by them, but I hope they''re feeling loved. I really wish for Kikiyama's happiness. I know I probably sound corny as heck, but that's how I feel about this game. lol
As I started this video and heard first notes, nostalgia did hit me the hardest, even though i played this game December/2020. The 00s web vibes are stunning and the anguish is immesuriable. Too bad I'm nearly as old as the game. Masterpiece. Excuse me for any grammar mistakes, I'm from Russia.
In Japanese culture, jellyfish in dreams is a symbol of mental distress. The ending screen shows jellyfish near a puddle of blood. Madotsuki just couldn't handle the distress she was going through in the real world, and it shows in her dreams. [SPOILERS AHEAD] So she ended up committing suicide. R.I.P Madotsuki, you didn't deserve whatever happened to you.
I can relate so much to her... Living like a hermit. My life... alone. Confined in my room, and no friends in real life, in a different country... all i can do is play pc games :
+Jules Floutier just do this. tell everyone to go fuck themselves and lose everyone bam! your a hermit if you don't do that it ether means you can't do it. or you really don't want that life. So which is it?
17:30 You are the only one alive in the world and you can do whatever you do want. 18:33 Yes you are alone you don't know what to do 19:28 again you are alone, you miss everyone, you feel sad and lonely 20:29 you realize you aren't completely alone, you are the only human, but there are some haunted spirits out there. 22:12 youre in a haunted forest, struggling to survive. 23:07 you see the demons and you have to run, what else? Just run 24:36 you are in a weird place that's way darker, you don't know what's out there. 25:32 those are demonic screams that are wanting your soul. 26:22 you realize that this can't be true. It is a dream. You wake up, but the dream is creeping you out 27:28 (new story) its 10 pm at the beach! Go on the boardwalk 29:38 there is a mall near the beach, open 24/7. Why not go in? It's pretty unnerving and big in there. You find yourself lost in that mall. 30:33 you found the way out! You hear some funky music. 32:01 this all was also a dream
this soundtrack is insane how did he produce this well in 2004 only to never release a single other work under the name kikiyama again in his life there is so much technical skill behind every one of these tracks
to be honest, the saving theme's song really makes me think that it was a song composed to comfort Madotsuki about what she went through (if its hypothetical that her whole dream was memories of her bad experiences)
I love this game so much. It's my favorite game. Just the music, how it drones your thoughts out with its 5-second loops. The visuals, freaky, but at the same time unique and varying. But I think the main reason I love this game so much is because of how much story and how many messages are told using absolutely no dialogue. That's something that takes real skill to get right, and I'm yet to see a game that does this better than Yume Nikki. Just the way Kikiyama brings it all together is just amazing. This game deserves more praise.
This was so weird and kind of scary in a very strange way. Wonderland makes a whole lot more sense than Madotsuki's dreams. It's quite an experience, definitely worth a play through.
One day I'll release something like this. Kikiyama got it right, ofc, I'll never make anything thats this influential. But to think I can just shovel my mind into an interactive media. Makes me happy and sad at the same time.
i have been using this soundtrack to sleep for years now. for some reason, it works like magic. god this soundtrack is absolutely fantastic. still holds up to this day.
yume nikki is a game that deeply impacted me. its surreal atmosphere and introspective themes made me reflect on my own dreams and emotions. it opened my mind to new possibilities and sparked my creativity. i'm grateful for the experience it provided. thank you Kikiyama
People ussualy focus so much of what the meaning of the game could be that they forgot to actually enjoy the game. Theories and symbolisms aside, the game itself it's actually a masterpiece. The whole Yume Nikki experience it's somenthing so unsetting and beautiful at same time. Thanks Kikiyama.
Damn. This video is almost 2 years old & it gained this much attention in this time. Was it shared on Uboachan.net or something? I'm glad people enjoy it, though.
this game is such an unique thing to me. I'm never scared or really disturbed by surreal/supernatural horror, but I can barely even listen to the songs without feeling agony, and I can't really play the game for much time before having to quit for how bad it makes me feel. It's really disturbing with the things that are represented and implied in the dreams, makes me think that Kikiyama probably went/had been going through some shit in his/her life. But even so I think this game is one of my favorites, a piece of art that is truly worthy of discussion and of being known.
There isn't a single piece in this soundtrack I dislike, but I think if I were to pick a favorite, it'd be a tie between the Barracks and Mars-san. The Barracks settlement just gives off such a dilapidated yet chill atmosphere. I spent a lot of time screwing around there in the game, and it really grew on me. And Mars-san's theme is just plain tragic. That poor weird, crying alien with his broken ship... Its insane how much emotion there is in a scene as visually bizarre as that.
No music screams "alone" consistently across all tracks like Yumme Nikki's OST. Devoid of the visuals and game itself and listening just to the music, you can feel like you're walking alone on a dark road at night with the occasional light illuminating your path, like you're in your room when everyone is asleep, like you're in your dreams but it's just a space of pretty abstract colours, like you're walking alone in a desert, its endless. Might be how the instruments/notes that linger long after they were played, the reverb, the soft-yet-metallic, sometimes mechanical/electrical choice of instruments. Even the lighter Rave/Dance like soundtracks make you feel alone too, it's like youre in a party but it's just you. Either everyone's left or no one arrived in the first place... but you're still having fun, you don't care. It's all very distinct, the soundtrack Eerie or unnerving to some definitely, comforting to others or perhaps under circumstances (speaking about the latter as someone who tends to feel a sense of calm whenever I'm presented with an environment or situation that makes me feel truly alone). Regardless, it makes up for a fitting soundtrack to a rather sombre game, contextually speaking
yume nikki is such a good game. i first played it when i was around 8 or 9 and ive loved it ever since. its so nostalgic and it will always be in my top 10 favorite games
I think Madotsuki was a victim in her life : she had to bare some horrible and messed up traumas and she couldn't do anything to deal with it. She was all alone and she couldn't find any solution.
In origine pensavo di usare le musiche originali, quindi ho chiesto per vedere se erano protette da copyright o se erano in creative commons, salute :3 Tutto bene, è appena uscito il video nuovo :3

Its wild how much this one soundtrack influenced RPGmaker and psychological RPG games for decades. Hot off of playthroughs of games like OMORI and Undertale, it's really clear how beloved this strange game was to many.
Me, too.
And how it influence the MCs and their level of creativity I appreciate as a fan

Sean W. Stewart Super Metroid is known for it's atmosphere as well.

These tracks are so minimalistic yet I listened to them on repeat for literally hours. Mural World and The Docks in particular. I love how atmospheric they sound like, it's like being hypnotized into a surreal dream world.
Mural World and The Docks are the same track, but The Docks is just slowed down.

I'd like to personally thank you
(seriously, I was obsessed with this game in my sophomore year, and it fills me with so much nostalgia to hear the OST that I feel like crying whenever I hear it ;w;)

Same here. It was my jam when I had first entered High School.
crazy how times moved so fast yet the beautiful OST from this game will always stay timeless. sophomore year felt like a lifetime ago... 21 atm.
It's not just a game, it's art.
If Yume Nikki is a way of expressing emotions, thoughts, situations, it seems to me that it's a masterpiece
I want to do the same someday
I honestly like how the OST is VERY subconsious sounding. Between dreaming and primordial and distant memories .
Every song is a short loop. Because once you're awake, you don't remember much of your dream ;)

this soundtrack is insane how did he produce this well in 2004 only to never release a single other work under the name kikiyama again in his life there is so much technical skill behind every one of these tracks
to be honest, the saving theme's song really makes me think that it was a song composed to comfort Madotsuki about what she went through (if its hypothetical that her whole dream was memories of her bad experiences)
This game deserves more praise.
i would say rain world is up there, using almost no dialogue (almost).

I like to imagine myself listening to this video while sleeping so I can end up in the same dream as Madotsuki lol

this game is such an unique thing to me.
It's all very distinct, the soundtrack
Eerie or unnerving to some definitely, comforting to others or perhaps under circumstances (speaking about the latter as someone who tends to feel a sense of calm whenever I'm presented with an environment or situation that makes me feel truly alone). Regardless, it makes up for a fitting soundtrack to a rather sombre game, contextually speaking

To commit suicide?
I think he means her weird dreams/nightmares and how she has the same look on her face all the time
I think Madotsuki was a victim in her life : she had to bare some horrible and messed up traumas and she couldn't do anything to deal with it. She was all alone and she couldn't find any solution.
