The Windows Store available via the Windows 8 operating system has apps for the skills you want your students to develop, for everything from basic math with the Khan Academy to clever videos on science that promote critical thinking in BrainPop. A free account at Skydrive.com can provide free tools (with more features than Google docs) that promote live collaboration across physical boundaries.
The idea of students using holograms & interacting w/ virtual space does not align w/ the developmental needs of students. When learning something new, students need concrete learning experiences that are infused with logical & physical attributes; then they can move to abstract concepts. The argument being made is that students no longer learn this way due to their access to tech. Can you convince me that technology can teach students to read, count, critically think, social development etc.?
