It is way darker than I first expected. Alundra is my favorite title on the top down RPG games. I like games that maintain the balance of solving problems using puzzles and doing battles.
I love the pixelart and am still looking for spare time to make shadoboxes out of it.

The thing that I remember the most is how wildly different the 2nd game was compared to the first. So much so that they don't even seem to be the same franchise. However this isn't the first time a sequel was wildly different than the first game and has been seen several times. Super Mario Bros 2 US was way different from Super Mario Bros. Final Fantasy 2 was way different from Final Fantasy. Zelda 2 vs Zelda. Metroid 2 vs Metroid. Lufia 2 vs Lufia. Those are just what pops up off the top of my head, I'm sure there is more.

Alundra is just a straight up classic imo. It deserves a place among the best of the PS1. I’m really surprised it doesn’t get that much recognition, especially considering the beautiful graphics and the great story.

The first Alundra is one of my best memories of the PS1. I remember being stuck on one puzzle forever in the early internet era and scouring bookstores for a guidebook just so I could look up how to get past the one part. Remember to love your internet, kids.

Truly a masterpiece. I thought about the first game for years after playing it as a kid on my uncle’s PS1, then eventually found the name and clawed my way back to playing it. Never had another experience remotely like that when it came to wanting to a game, and the desire to re-live it.

Oh man, mentioning Granstream Saga in the Alundra 2 review takes me back. I was at a Gamestop looking at their used PS1 games and I was in the mood for an action RPG. I was deciding between these two titles. I had never heard of Granstream but I do remember hearing Alundra 2 wasn't as good as the original. I really liked the 1st one. So, what do I do? Go with the disappointment or risk it on Gran? I went with the risk and it was....ok. Honestly, thinking back, Granstream Saga definitely plays less Zelda-y and more like a Souls game, where you spend a lot of time one-on-one and gameplay is more weight-y. If only I had your review to watch back in the early 2000s.A shame, I know.
I never did play Alundra 2 though. Even after watching this I still want to go back and play the 1st game over the 2nd. It was certainly a fun play.

    • @Xygor

    • @Eener1000
      @Eener1000 ปีที่แล้ว

The Granstream Saga was a kind of spiritual continuation of Soulblazer, Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma. It was made by a lot of the original devs from those games.

Alundra 2 is so full of nostalgia for me. I was really young when I played it so I didn’t know any better to how corny it was 😅

I remember seeing Alundra in the magazines and thinking how colorful it looked, and when I finally got it I was pretty disappointed that they swapped the color pallete. Im not sure if it happened during the translation process or what but the game looked like when you run a PAL game through an NTSC tv and get lose a ton of colors, but even Alundras bright red hair got lost in the conversion.

    • @ausaskar
      @ausaskar 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Was probably the magazine (or the printing process) altering the colours. I noticed a similar thing with a Red Alert 1 review back in the day, the colours were completely different in the review to how they actually were.

Will always be one of my favourite games. I remember some of the puzzles being really difficult but rewarding, and the boss fights being epic! For me, the music is extremely nostalgic and I have to say at times it portrayed the dark, hectic and sombre emotion of the game so well. It's really unfortunate that we may never see any kind of remake or continuation of the series, but there are some of us who will always remember Alundra as being one of the most memorable games of all time. I never played Alundra 2 but I won't regret that :P Thanks for covering this gem and letting us who played it reminisce, and for inspiring some who never got to to play it now!

I played both of them waaay back when they released and yeah Alundra 1 was such a good title, I had a blast playing it, what caught my attention to this game was the cover art, before I even knew it was a top view game like zelda, the art caught me before looking at the screens on the back of the box, the name Alundra shinning on the box art was badass!
I loved this game a lot and remember it was so challenging because of the puzzles, took me so much to finally get that last sword too, but its a great title that I might get it again. The second one tough... as you might think I was hyped to get the second part, but was disappointed after a few moments into the game, its not bad tough, but where's Alundra???! who's this kid? its got nothing to do with the first game and thats what got me to no like it much.
Still, its a fairly good game, I finished both and of course the first one's much better, but both are good.

Man I love this series, Alundra 1 definitely is great, the pixel art is impeccable, the story is really nice although kinda sad. I see Alundra 2 always getting a lot of hate, but I actually enjoy it more than 1, maybe because it was my first Alundra, but something about it feels very cheerful and nostalgic, the vibe is different, certainly it hasn't aged well graphically. Also the OST in 2 is amazing, very pirate-like and cheerful at times, fun fact, the composer is the same person that made the One Piece anime OST. Great video!

I actually liked Alundra 2 well enough on its own. My only complaint, surprise surprise, is that they labeled it as a sequel. Great way to kill a potential series is to take a completely unrelated name and slap a sequel title on it.
Breath of Fire suffered that big time as well.
Little part of me hopes to see a proper Alundra 3 some day. I'm sure there's like a dozen spiritual, indy successors to the game.

The lake shrine theme is so good on Alundra 1. Something I've been curious about with this game is the song that usually plays when someone dies also appears in Legend of Legaia when you run into the purple hair lady at various points. Same exact song. As for Alundra 2, it really seems like they created a completely different game and then realized maybe they should change the name late in development.

Awesome game that I got at release and when I was finished with it sadly I let a friend borrow it and never got it back. I have it on my steam deck and plan to play it next time there is a slow period for gaming which might be awhile with how many great games that have out this year and the many still to come. Really looking forward to it because I pretty much have forgotten everything about it.
Reminds me of when I got Demon Souls for PS3 at release. Amazing games that no one really knew about or played. When I went to get Demon Souls on release day from GameStop they only got two copies and one of them was a pre order. Same with Alundra I remember when I got it the store had very limited copies.

This could have been their answer to the Legend of Zelda. Sony is sitting on a gold mine of great franchises that haven't seen any new releases in years. Alundra is one of my least favorite video games precisely because of, what I would deem as, an excessive emphasis on puzzles. I say this after having 100% completed everything the game had to offer several years ago. It was just so tiring and it felt like it bogged down the story because dungeons would take forever to complete. And yes, the jumping mechanics being...I'll say imprecise...was extremely frustrating all the way through. It's still part of my PS1 collection, but there are few games I genuinely dislike as much as this one.
If Alundra is A Link to the Past with more puzzles, then I would recommend people who detest video game "puzzles" as much as I do check out the Ys series instead, which is like Zelda with more of an emphasis on action and speed.
I'm sure Alundra may be fun if you like video game puzzles, and that's valid, but I bounced off from it hard despite giving it more than a fair chance. I just never found the puzzles difficult or interesting. They always seemed to me like an obstacle to progressing to the parts of the game that I actually found fun.

I love Alundra and it is one of my favorite games on the PS1. Alundra 2 by itself isn't a bad game, but it is a bad sequel to Alundra because it seems like it should be a game from an entirely different series. The plot of Alundra 2 isn't connected to the original game, and the style and tone of the game are very different as well. The dark story of Alundra and the beautiful pixel art of the game were a huge part of the experience that I enjoyed and it was a huge disappointment when the sequel didn't deliver either of those things. Alundra 2 should have been released under another name, you don't even play as Alundra in it. 😆

I have played many game genres and games in genersl, this is one off the best games ever made and in my opinion having played all zeldas this is better in story, atmosphere and adventure, the maturer themes and the music created a great world, puzzles were difficult which i here many complaints about..if you find these difficult why even play a game..a game is meant to challenge you, there is no joy when there is no challenge and if anything link to the past and links awakening dungeons are a real pain to beat and repetitive looking whereas alundra has less backtracking.
The music is phenomenal, i still listen to it and themes and variation of the songs composition from where you are in the game captures the emotions very well, just take the oudoor rxplotratiin music then listen the the tomb..then when your in the desert.
He is one of the best game composers in the world in my opinion and i honestly believe music creates the game story the most.
Ever play wild arms, breath of fire 3 or ff7,8,9 etc..good lord these games are woven in with the music so good just like alundras.
Graphics and art settings in each are or level is vwey unique and crwative, puzzle deign is fantastic and makes you think.
If you want terrible puzzles just try out brain lord..oh my. Mix that in with big confusing dungeons!
    Alundra has this balnced well.
Even the sound design, pi king items entering dreams, getting hurt, boxes opening create a great feeling in this game.
The story is brilliant, an alien who came to earth that feeds off the energy of humans through fear and pretending to be a freindly god, the games story gets deep into the psyche, not only of strange powers or aliens but our own fear of death itself.
Im a believer in the paranormal and ma y say that negative entities feed on fear or their believe in them..just like melzas..he invades nighmares whivh if your a believer in spirits they are said to do..so there is thid lingering fear in our subconscious whether you are suoerstious or not of unknown and unseen entities invading our thoughts dreams and fears..just like Melzas.
    10/10 in my book.
For 1997 this is amazing and gets replayable the more you play.

Alundra was my favorite ps game. It broke my heart what they did to Alundra 2. I never had my father around... but it didn't matter because i had Jess.

I can see why so many people love the first one that much. Such a classic!

@@Xygor It's a dark story, hidden in a bright game. Wish we had more games like this. I would enjoy a remake of this game. Polish the graphic a bit, high quality of the music. Alundra may not have the best ost however, whenever you hear requiem (the name of one of the songs) you know that sadness awaits.

I certainly enjoyed the first game, but the shear amount of puzzles and the complexity of some was enough to turn me off after a game breaking bug half-way through. I'm sure I would have been satisfied if that hadn't happened, but it would have been better with less puzzles IMO. Otherwise I think it's a great game.

Alundra was so amazing but the puzzles were HARD for me as a young teen. I listen to the soundtrack at work sometimes to feel like a kid again. I wish we could get a re release or remaster. Alundra 2 was straight up garbage.

Part 1 was THE Zelda for ps1 owners .. Fab OST, impressive gfx even today, gripping story, feeling of accomplishment when overcoming challenges; it was too perfect- the 2nd was blah sadly

While Alundra is an irrefutable classic, I think that the only reason Alundra 2 is so readily dismissed as it is, is simply the name/connection to the first.
    It's a fine/decent game on it's own merits.
But it's a major letdown as a "successor" to the original Alundra.
    It's a disappointment by comparison.
If it had been named anything else, I feel like it would have been better received.
