When it comes to cold weather or 4th season camping your tent has never been designed to keep you warm. The items that keep you warm are sleeping bags, insulating pads, clothes and warm food. It is advisable to warm up by doing exercises before you snuggle up. A tent has one job only and that is keeping elements like rain, snow and wind chill away from you as good as possible. If a tent keeps you warm your probably fighting with condensation
tent design and inner fabrics will most certainly contribute to temp inside a tent
Whoever told you to exercise before sleeping in cold weather is wrong. Warm up by eating food or boiling water and putting it in a Nalgene or other apparatus. The second you start breathing heavier you create more condensation in the tent or you’ll start sweating and when you’re sleeping you’ll get cold real fast. Completed cold weather field training in the Breckenridge mountains for the Marines, trust me when I say do not exercise before getting into a sleeping bag.
Love my Hornet OSMO 1P. I'm 5' 10" and it has all the space I need, and not having loads of room makes me really think about what I pack.
Got to admit, that hail storm was AWESOME in the video. Really showed something important to me. Wind resistance. Too many tents fail when wind / water hits and it sucks. That was just so awesome in a video to see it with those 3 tents next to each other. Never thought about 1P being a bonus of smaller area needed. Kinda just was naturally a fact so didnt think of that. Good point you made about that. Also, had NO CLUE about moosejaw rentals. That is rad. Great vid brother, A7C = niceeee!
I went with the Marmot tungsten ul 1p, that I purchased in fall of 2021. My first real backpacking and ul tent. Its somewhere around 2.5lbs. Im a smaller guy and its plenty big enough for me. With my 72x25" pad, theres an extra 6in. Or so in width in the tent and a good 16inches in length that i use for gear storage. I'll probably never go with a 2p, as most of my adventures are solo and im a firm believer in the UL approach.
When researching tents, i found trekking pole tents to be finnicky to get a good pitch and that they require alot of guy lines that can be a hazard when visibility is low like at night. I like freestanding type tents...hook open the door, pick it up and shake out any unwanted dirt/debri.
With that said, six moon designs,durston x mid pro and gg the one all have caught my attention, but its 1p all the way for me!

I used to use an ultralight bivy + tarp for solo camping, which has some advantages, the main one being that it's insanely easy to find places to camp in almost any terrain. The down side of course is that without trees it's more challenging to set up.
Once I got a crazy light tent though I just switched to using that. I would still be using the Duplex I had were it more stormproof, but the high walls make it very breezy. That is great in summer when I'm using it primarily for debugging rather than for keeping rain or snow off of me and my gear, but not so great for inclement weather, so now I have an X-Mid 2 Pro.
Since I usually solo camp I use the extra space for my gear so that I have my vestibules open in case I need the sheltered space for cooking, as well as because putting my gear inside the tent is convenient. :)
Nice overview of some great 1p option tents! When I think about 1p tents these days more space matters. Feeling less claustrophobic goes a long way. I almost always take my GG1 over my Lanshan 1 for that reason!
I’ve only ever used the Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo. Price, weight, and space as a tall guy were a big deal when I was shopping for one. It gave the best balance of everything at the time. Now Durston and OV seem to have comparable models that I think would work great as well.
My fav is technically not a tent, but a OneWind hammock with built in bug net, an ultralight solution with a lightweight air pad, blanket and pillow.
My favourite 1p tent would be the Lightwave Sigma S 10 for it is a tank in rough weather and wind conditions, extremely easy and fast to pitch, tiny footprint and pack size/weight.I’m testing it right now but I’m more interested to get hands on a blackdiamond highlight 2p for alpine use
I have a Durston 1p original version. I really like it, and use it more than any other tent I own.
The big vestibules make it feel a lot larger than it is, and provide plenty of dry gear storage. It’s super easy to set up once you do it a few tomes. My only minor complaint is that I wish the inner was a little wider. (The tweaks they’ve made to the current version address that, plus a couple other minor upgrades that would be nice to have.)
That said, I’m fortunate to be able to own a few different tents. If I could have only one, a 2 person tent is much more versatile for all but some very specific uses, for not much extra weight and bulk.
5’10” and I love my Rainbow Li. The vestibule is pretty small, but I can fit everything inside with me other than my shoes.
I would the the X-Mid pro 1 would be my favourite 1 person tent. I am currently using the Tarptent Dipole 2 LI which is amazing.
Got to love it when nature gives you some great b-roll unexpectedly 😂. Great review and great advice on picking the right tent for the job. Another issue for me, as a bigger hiker, is that often I’m unable to fit well into some one person tents. So I’m usually finding myself using two person tents as my one me tent. Sorry, I don’t yet have a favorite because I don’t fit into most of them, haha. Great vid!
I tried to like the x-mid 1p, but it's just too confined for me. I am not a through hiker, and spend days in one place while working on trails. I have to empty my pack, and use it daily for work, so I need room for all my stuff in the tent (where there is a floor), and the x-mid didn't have it. The Six Moons Design Lunar Solo, and even the Lanshan 1 pro gave me far more interior room that I could use (not at the head and feet like the x-mid), though nowhere nearly as much vestibule space as the x-mid. My situation may seem unique, but it's the same as folks who backpack into an area, then day hike out to explore it for a few days.
I love my one-person tents. Small footprint and free standing are the two things that I need when remote camping in the northeast. My MSR Hubba is by far my favorite and most used tent. :-)
that was a very popular tent until MSR started selling 'em without taping the seams.

Tarptent Rainbow for stealth camping in The Whites in NH. Packs small and has a small footprint.
My favorite one person tent is actually sold as a two person, but I'm only 5'11" and still have to sleep on the diagonal to avoid touching the walls. Still, it will fit two persons (with almost no gear inside) in a pinch making it super versatile with a footprint of only 82 x 48.
I was so happy when you mentioned the MooseJaw rental program, because I'm debating between a few pieces of gear and would love to actually compare them in use - but I just checked it out and it says they're discontinuing it!! :'(

I only have 2p trekking pole tents right now….and it’s perfect for the northeast. But now he’s got me rethinking things and I may look at getting a freestanding 1p for future trips out west.
When you come out West just KNOW you'll need something to POUND stakes into the often rock hard ground.
Good video. I'm just now looking to replace my 20-year old 2p tent. If I was planning to buy only one tent it would probably be a 2p. I'd need to be able to camp with my wife, but still have it be light enough for solo trips. If I can swing buying two tents I'll buy a 3p for the extra room and comfort with another person, and a 1p for solo trips for the big weight savings over a 3p.
I just got a Kazoo 1-person backpacking tent for $80 off Amazon. It’s 3.3 lbs and freestanding. Used it a few weekends ago and it was just fine. I’m sure I’ll upgrade eventually but for now this one works just fine.

@@williamrankin7283 it’s def tight quarters but it packs down small and it’s easy to set up. There are quite a few positive reviews on Amazon about the tent but I always take them with a grain of salt. I’ve actually had good luck with the Moonlence 2p backpacking tent I got off Amazon a few years back for under $40 (pre-owned but still new). I’ve used that thing 20 times + and never had an issue. So I figured I’d give the bargain 1p a shot too and see how it holds up. Eventually I’ll step my game up to a nicer one but not in a huge hurry to spend $200-$400 on one.
Although I main a 2 person tent, I frequently use and enjoy a 1 person tent, even when car camping or when weight is a nonissue. I always use free standing but that’s my bias. I like to camp in storms, and a single person tent combined with a (very) large tarp overhead is a fun time.
I have a Tarptent Notch 1P. It’s barely as big as my mattress inside but I like it a lot. The two vestibules have more space together than the inside of the bugnet so II put it up on a big sheet of Tyvek and set my stuff outside. Sure, if I were richer I’d go for a Durston but I’m okay as is.

Personally like my kelty 1p dirt motel tent myself and my 20° down queezer bag super cheap and way warmer
I lowkey regret not getting the Durston Xmid 2 Pro over the 1, but the majority of the time I would spend here in Alaska is with strangers and I don't have a partner at the moment. That being said, the Xmid 1 Pro is very spacious for a 1-person and the Xmid 2 Pro doesn't accomodate two 25 inch wide pads (unless you have both tapered). I love the xmid 1 so far!

The one person tent I have put the most nights in is the Gossamer Gear The One. The older model which was a little bigger than the current design. The dual pole design makes for much more headroom and a more spacious feeling than most single pole pyramid shelters. That being said I also really like the Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo. I bought one which my son wound up taking after I’d only used it for one night and I just bought a second one for my daughter. The floor space is even roomier than The One even though it doesn’t feel as open.
Sometimes I wish I had not sold my GG The One. That was a cool tent. The OV Fortius is really similar though.

I have this tent too and love it! I just wish it had room to store my gear during a rain storm. Currently searching for a new 1P tent to use on the AT that has as much headroom as the flashlight AND room for gear.
I am not a thru hiker nor into ultralight gear. I have section hiked some of the NCT in central MN but mostly I just hike into the backcountry to camp. So, weight isn't my biggest concern, durability is. This is why, when on a multi-day backpacking trip in northern Minnesota, I prefer to use my North Face Stormbreak-1 (coffin) tent coupled with my Osprey pack, titanium cookware, Enlightened Equipment Conundrum, etc... Not ultralight but about as light as I want to go. When I am just hiking a few miles in, I will use the Litefighter-1 tent with my 5.11 RUSH 72 pack, Stanley Adventure cookware, and whatever pieces of the military sleep system the weather calls for. Both of these tents are double walled, and I would put them up against any 2-man single walled tent as far as condensation goes... or durability for that matter.

I checked it out and you don't actually have any content but, oddly enough, I somehow recognize your name. I was wondering if you have anything to do with the GPAA? I live in Minnesota so don't have much experience with gold prospecting, but I do own a few pans, a Gold Rush Nugget Bucket, a Royal 30” recirculating sluice box kit (and a recirculating system I made for it) and a few other items. As you can imagine there isn't much gold here, but I have panned a few bags of 'pay dirt' and tried my luck, finding little, in south Dakota.

I'm just putting together my first system and it sounds very similar to this with the light fighter, and the Stanley cookware for now, coupled with some titanium pieces. Definitely not a thru-hiker, or a Ultra light. I want to hike into the woods and camp. Meant to do that I need Camp gear, including knives for processing wood. It's been years since I've hacked into camp so we'll see how the weight adds up. I'm building out my system now. The 511 Rush what's high on my list. It's tough to find the right backpack. I'm finding that I want to cross between a technical, and tactical, that way it's modular and I can add, and subtract whatever I want. Not sure will end up. I'm guessing I'll end up with a half a dozen different backpacks for different scenarios.

For a 1P Tent, I love My RCP Trekker Tent 1
I like 1P tents for some reason. I'm a smaller dude so space isn't a concern. I've been liking the small footprint of 1P freestanding tents like the Vik 1 lately. I paid $99 on NatureHike's US channel. I got tired of the set up time and large footprint of trekking pole tents like the Lanshan 1. There were sites where only the Vik 1 would fit in a small, flat area. On my the last trip, the ground was really hard packed and had to use rocks to hold down the stakes. If I brought a trekking pole tent, the setup time would have been longer.
Right on! The Vik 1 is a pretty rad tent. Wish it was a little taller at the peak, but otherwise it's great.

1-person free standing tents I call coffin tents
I prefer my one person tent. Trekking pole tents, which are kind of currently the trend, will take two poles for a two person tent. Anyone who is hiked some serious miles in the high Sierra knows that the chances of breaking a pole are quite high. I’ve broken a couple. Needing only one pole, as well as it taking up a smaller footprint are reasons why I go with my 1 p tent.
Which brand 1-person tent do you use? I, too, hike the High Sierras & my choice is the Hilleberg Enan.

@@natlovell122 As of 1 Jan 2023, yes, they are $720. I paid $680 when I bought mine directly from Hilleberg back in March 2020. Still, I"ve gotta admit that was a pricey tent from a dollar standpoint, however, it is something that I KNOW will provide me shelter from the storm & something I can either Will it to a relative or sell at least what I paid for it, possibly more. Hilleberg tents all bring a hefty "used" selling price.
Quick answer for me is no. I backpack alone for the most part or wouldn't share tent anyway. Age and overall health means Ultralight so small minimal kit. Most places I go have small and hard to find flat camp sites. I current tent of choice is the ZPacks Plex Solo.

I fully support/agree with everything you've said about MOOSEJAW. Yes, I've purchased big & small ticket items from 'em.
I'm 5'3" which means most any tent ever manufactured is plenty big enough for lil ole MEeee.
In all my years of hiking & overnighting, I've NEVER been in a situation where I couldn't pitch any tent I've owned into soil.
My one & only tent is a Hilleberg Enan which is my 5-Star hotel out in the boonies - Yes, I want shelter that I KNOW will RELIABLY protect me from a strong gusty windy or rainy storm up in the high Sierras. YES, I ALWAYS place big heavy rocks atop each tent stake. I've NEVER had a tent stake pull out of the ground when overnighting & that goes way back to my Boy Scouting days when my tent was a GI Surplus 2-man pup tent.
I've enjoyed reading most of the other replies. I wanted to see what tent others like.

@@BackcountryExposure You'll definitely like the ease of pitching an Enan, although you might find the interior space a limiting factor. One thing FOR SURE, is it will provide you with SHELTER from most any storm Mother Nature can throw at it here in America. And you'll have sufficient space in the closed vestibule area to cook a Peak Refuel meal with a canister type stove.

Just me of course but I find it ironic to go backpacking to get out into the Wide Open Spaces only to then get into an itty bitty closed off tent that you can't freely move around in without touching wet walls. 2p all the way! 😊
The Snugpak Ionosphere is worth every penny!
I’d consider the Ionosphere as a bigger bivy bag. Makes it kinda hard to sit inside waiting for weather to move by. Pretty dark inside, too and prices have gone up too much
I'm not a fan of 1 person tents. They usually are about 19-20 sq feet. So there isn't much room next to a 25" wide pad. I prefer 25-26 sq ft. My (discontinued) North Face O2 is right there. It's a 1 1/2 person tent. Perfect. 2.4 pounds. I wish some of the other manufacturers would make something similar in a DCF 1 pound package.
Also. I had a Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2. Actually had too much room and required a big space to pitch. Sold it after 5 nights camping. I am considering making a lighter version of my NF O2. Probably reduce the weight by 40% and make it about 24 ounces. If I do it I'll put it on my channel; TomLovesDIY.

I’d not buy 1P because of the lack of space for the gear and comfort.
no they not, and mine actually saved my life in Summer. Due to storm and hypothermia. Super quick to setup.
