Rip Ahmad Jamal I met him several times where I work. As a doorman in a 5 stars hôtel I Can tell you He was Always so kind, so gentle...and his smile so friendly. I GOT many autographs on vinyl and pictures with him. I was really sad when i knew he passed away But One Thing IS important...he will leave for ever in Music, and in my ❤ ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I agree, this is all about this beautiful music and wonderful musicians. But music helps get me through the day, in the foreground and in the background. Through the bad times and the good times. So I love to see those who sit down and listen intently and those who carry it through the day while the music carries them along. Different stroke for different folks, but the music is always "ear-ravishingly" beautiful.
Happy Happy 90th Birthday Mr. Jamal! I so love the way you play the piano and I really love the way you play Spartacus theme. I have heard many others play it, but none does what you do. You touch the mind, soul and heart. I wish you 90 more years on this planet.
This is a very interesting and engaging take on the Love Theme from Spartacus. I've noticed that with the occasional exception, most everyone who performs this piece leaves out the bridge in the original score. I admit it does kind of distract from the very simple but haunting opening and closing motifs. Nicely done.
Salaam: Many of the mature contemporary artists of the era comprehend what it means to actually take license with a theme, and then render or make tribute to it by carefully enhancing the original theme, as they improvise around- Yet, they are extremely maticulous, repectful, and artfully creative while centering on every thematic bridge, cord, harmonious melody, and base-line. They will never render a theme unrecognizable. They live within its components, thus their approach is always organic.
I see fingertips trippingly dancing... what's more perfect to one's senses than to experience this magical journey on a cool Charleston Sunday morning.... simply breathtaking.... such a blessing
It was actually George Russell who pioneered the modal approach on the behest of Miles Davis, whos autobiography described Jamals modal command as a spirit that we can reach out to, but never touch. IMO, the charismatic swing of Jamals solos are more daring and inventive. Evans trio sounded like a trio, but Jamal made you hear a full orchestra. Also, he could reach into his soul and funk up the joint as he did with drummer Idris Muhammad. As with Pops and Bird, chops precede undeniable influence
wow I've never heard someone actually convey love from an instrument like Ahmad Jamal does on this ambient performance/ piece. Quite interesting and amazing.
It is from Jamals gift for spacing the notes within a jazz modal framework that we have great albums like Kind of Blue and Maiden Voyage. McCoy Tyner and bassist Jimmy Garrison ingeniously utilized this approach to enrich the sheets of sound that flowed from the saxophone of their boss, John Coltrane. While Bill Evans, paused his notes with great emotional sophistication, none could measure up to Brother Ahmad. Thank you for revolutionizing the style of jazz music with such sober dignity.
nujabes did a cover of this called eclipse. Yusef Lateef did an oboe cover. Nujabes then did a cover of lateefs cover called final view. All are amazing songs
Wonderful piece of music. This is another cat I slept on. I'd only heard "Poinciana" by him on one of the "Giants Of Jazz" CD's from Time/Life up until today and the occasional song you'll hear on the music channels on satellite maybe. I'll definitely be checking out some more of his stuff though if this is any indication of the level of artistry he consistently displays.
@heraldojesus21 Wentto his concert in Perpignan. More than 30 years had gone by since the last time I heard him. I was amazed how far he had taken his music to this so rich sphere. Then shortly after the concert I heard he was not going on tour any more! Is this true?
thank you for posting, i saw him in Bern, Switzerland, years ago and am so thankful I had this opportunity, he is so inspiring and amazing and plays still wonderful even if he's over 80 now.
Happy Birthday Ahmad Jamal! May you have many many more and kept playing music. i love tthe way you play this song. it is from the album Gentic Walk. I have been trying to find it. Does anybody know where I can get it?
Wow.... That took my breath away. I actually forgot to breathe!! The sound isn't harsh to my ears, like what I'm stuck listening to on the radio, and it's easy to get carried away in the music. I'm not a wicked expert in music (Like the other well constructed comments. I'm kind of intimidated... haha) but this song's so smooth, I can't help but lean back and forget to do my work. Haha
How can I get a mp3 of this song? I couldn't even find a CD of the walking genetic album....it only exists on vinyl I think....If someone has an idea how I could get it, except youtube-download-programs, pls tell me!

Rest in paradise, Mr Ahmad Jamal, as the music you left us allows us to aswell
Don't you love how we can appreciate such a span of music from baroque to jazz to rap!
Absolutely my favorite version. I'm so in love with his style.
Thank you Nujabes for introducing me to such lovely music over these years.

”I did not choose music, music chose me…” - Ahmad Jamal
It's not a means to an end. It's an end in itself.

Wow. Unexplained tears in my eyes listening to this!
Beautiful. I wish it were longer.

Saw him at the Checkmate Lounge in South Miami way back when (70's). What a night.
I can only imagine!
Bella, struggente musica dell'anima, che ti aiuta a vivere e sognare.
Che Dio ti benedica Ahmad !!!!
Oh Ahmad. you touched deep inside my heart with this one.
I felt the same thing. My heart feels this song every time I play it. Thank you Ahmad!
So many wonderful renditions of this haunting melody, but Ahmad Jamal's version is particularly beautiful and evocative.
Man this is so weird hahaha
I can't find the words that can describe so much grace

Ahmad Jamal, what a gifted jazz piano virtuoso.
La musica come uno specchio... difficile mentire... Jamal è vero musicista perchè consapevole della grandezza e piccolezza umana. Grazie Ciao... Salvo
Stunningly beautiful.
May I come back as i keep doing? What a wonderful piece. Asks nothing. Gives all.
Had the huge chance to see him live twice in Paris !

I'm 12 years late, but that is beautifully said. Wise words.
I see fingertips trippingly dancing... what's more perfect to one's senses than to experience this magical journey on a cool Charleston Sunday morning.... simply breathtaking.... such a blessing
The feelings of the occurrence as shown in the movie is beautifully executed by this artistic rendition by Master Jamal.
the best cover i've ever heard of this tune...so impressed
Ceck out Bill Evans' version. Its much more haunting but equally beautiful!
Oh God, it is so beatiful..I can't explain....
this is by far one of the best piano versions of this song... great job ahmad jamal!
may you rest in eternal peace and may your legacy live on forever❤️
Greatness in every note.
This is my favourite version. So touching. A masterpiece. Thank you.

Have you heard the version by Yusef Lateef? Whenever I hear that version I think of someone special from my days of early adulthood.
Such a wonderful love theme...
hermos tema! gracias! lo disfruto!
Rest in peace to an absolute legend.
I saw Mr Jamal live once in a small club under 200 people. It was simply magical.
I saw Ahmed Jamal at penns landing in phila
Very dynamic and energetic I wish he would have played Spartacus. What a moving rendition.

Caught this brother in san franciso in february at louise Davis symphony hall. His chops are still tight his use of space and time are timeless.
Wonderful.....
goosebumps every time, listening to Ahmad Jamal’s scaling
The Real One !!! BEAUTIFUL piece !!!!
Awesome jazz interpretation in piano of a beautiful theme. Impressive performance.
Absolutely beautiful!!!
To me this is his most beautiful work since Poinciana. Its exquisite beauty makes me cry tears of happiness in this world of such ugliness at times...
wow I've never heard someone actually convey love from an instrument like Ahmad Jamal does on this ambient performance/ piece. Quite interesting and amazing.
+Reggie Toussaint what do you think of bill evans version?
I've never heard Bill play this tune. But I'll definitely take a listen.

Une excellente interprétation de cette transcription pour le piano solo.
Ahmad Jamal : una bella, piacevole scoperta ,n un brano tenerissimamente dolce
love all the version , from r l to bill evans but this is taking me out of the loop .. and my breath with it.
A heavenly rendition of a beautiful composition. Bill Evans does a great job also, as does Yusef in his upbeat tempo version.
nujabes did a cover of this called eclipse.
Yusef Lateef did an oboe cover.
Nujabes then did a cover of lateefs cover called final view.
All are amazing songs
I love the Yusef Lateef version, Thanks for the Nujabes info- I will check it out
for sure,
extremely true. ty for the songs ;)
And we shall never ever forget the original by Alex North.
Also, to be rigorous, Lateef's version is way previous to Jamal's.
I also love the 2 Ino Hidefumi versions of the track, being the piano version my fav
Also: Bill Evans, from Conversations with Myself (1963), gorgeous version for 3 overdubbed pianos

PLEASE somebody transcribe this piece: let's spread true Beauty and Soul throughout this world.
Lateef would be a better choice for that I think Argo
Do I love this? Absolutely.
The closest thing to describing love by using music alone.
