if you go into the development settings you can change some stuff around and it removes 99% of the ads, really makes roku one of the best smart tv operating systems

I liked my Roku Ultra a lot, but I eventually swapped to a Nvidia Shield due to it supporting more lossless audio codecs natively (important due to Plex Client App transcoding and the fact that I have a surround sound system). The Roku is still pretty solid, so it's not a bad choice whatsoever if you have a budget. The rest of my folks use Roku, however.
Through all the crap on Roku, you can still find gold. Just watched two absolute classics on Crackle a few months ago with the comedy classic “Blazing Saddles” and the aft forgotten Clint Eastwood western “High Plains Drifter”
I remember playing Carrot Maina and other similar games at my grandma's house. They were part of a paid tv channel subscription in the past. It's cool to see them live on through Roku.
