Nice work, Dave! Gotta love that analog tone. Although it's very different from plugins. I found myself wanting more and more analog gear, and wanting more and more of that sound. And then realized that my music wasn't sounding like the rest of the genre-like music anymore. So then I started working backwards to strip some of that sound away (or look for more transparent sounding analog gear). It was one hell of an expensive and frustrating lesson!!! I feel that a nice hybrid combo of analog and in-the-box works best for todays music. Oh, and the more and more saturation that you keep adding into your music, the worse that it starts to sound! :-) That was a hard pill to swallow too! Just my personal findings with my music. Everyone is different, but sometimes... a little bit goes a long way!!! Cheers!
You are correct in your analysis of the kick/drums being tighter bit narrower with the Fg and wider and deeper with the Successor. I do hear it in my studio/\
Your analogy of switching between the two is exactly what I hear, prior to you explaining that way:) Hardware version is "open" vs software version "narrows in a bit"..
I do find the FG Grey is very "in your face." The FG Red and the Neve 33609 will give you a different room feel. The Heritage Audio makes the source audio come alive. Harmonics seem to be very much enhanced. Thank you for sharing this.
Great video as always. That hardware give some unique sound to the drums. One almost feel that is sitting "at" the drums. I use for the drum bus a SKnote SDC, the one that is almost a copy of the Shadow Hill compressor.
David's courses are excellent, I've taken quite a few some years back along with the mixing courses where he mixed a whole song each month, and we submitted our mixes of that song too... Really worthwhile courses you'll learn a lot from... In these comparisons, along with my own via the likes of hardware platforms online like mix analog and access analog, is if you set the emulations the same as the hardware, they're going to sound different (as David said above, not "Bad Different" but just different) the software will seem to lack an edge in width and depth and that magical hardware polish, but if you tweak the software add other bits n pieces to the software you can get within I would say 0.5% of the hardware, for example I tried a Neve 1073 pre and FET 1173 Blue, and put them up against the Arturia Neve Pre (not the exact same I know) and the Waves Blue FET and got a sound so VERY close to the hardware I could barely distinguish it, the settings weren't the same to get that result, but setting the emulations attack and release (leaving the ratio the same) the sound was indeed super close, I did the same with a few other emulated FETs and found that Waves are incredible plugins and that I didn't need hardware (for now LOL)... Check out David's course's he will get you up to speed with everything Studio One and mixing, love your work mate!
Right. 1 piece of hardware in the audio signal patch compared to a plugin that is tweaked wont make much of a difference as the plugin will sound pretty close, say 95% of the way there. Where hardware makes a real difference is when you have 3,4,5,6 pieces across you mix in different places. That is where you really start to hear the difference. now, can you spend 30 min tweaking all your plugins to get close? Of course you can. However, I find that using hardware I get the sound very quick. I dont need to tweak plugins, its just there and that's the difference. But again, adding 1 single unit or even 2 and using 95% all plugins you wont hear much of a difference. I also say over and over that for me, it's way more about the workflow not just about the sound.
Such a great comp. Punchy smooth, larger than life and musical. I also find that plugins don't deal with transients as well as hardware comps like this.
Hi, great video, it's just what I was looking for. For me, there is a huge difference between software and HW; Successor has definition, it does not make a "mass" of the sound, and also brings out the high frequencies with a beautiful drill, it is as if it assigned a "route" to each sound and its frequency. I looked for the other tests that you said you were going to do, but I couldn't find them!!! You're not going to do them? It would be very useful if after 2 years using this compressor you could tell your real experience. Greetings,

Great video...Heritage is awesome. (VST DRUMS used for comparison?) Good to see you coming more out of the box. I think that console you almost bought inspired you to start implementing some outboard gear? Without knowing all details...I think you made right choice about the console. You can make and customize your own outboard sound for sure!
Lol. Sorry but i got to laugh. The hardware sounded absolutely amazing on those drums. Suddenly it's a party. To all those still saying software is as good as hardware, i got to laugh at your faces as it switches between the two. I do like some of the clarity and tightness of the software, but my god, why do plugins narrow the phantom centre and cram everything into that space ? And, so boring and flat. Imagine having all hardware, you can completely elevate your mix with so much excitement and atmosphere.
I think I was hearing your converters more than I would like. Original UAD Apollo? The sound of the drums dry on between in-the-box and out-of-the-box with the Successor bypassed sounded quite different.
Hi love the show man I have a motif mx synt with 16 midi in / out. In Studio one we don't have any midi tracks, so no faders for those tracks. I know we can now use an aux channel, but it only controls the total volume of the synt. How can I get a fader for every midi output in Studio one? And also on my faderport. I want to use multiple instruments from my Motif at the same time. That would be very nice. We can do all that in Cubase. Let me know how this is possible or will that be in the future? Thanks GR. Ness
im a little bummed i must say. i had some highend hardware in my life and im totally in the box now because a dear friend of mine, wich is a really great producer, asked me the following: "do you think the listener would ever hear the difference how the music is produced or mixed? invest more time in the music then the tweaking". this pretty much changed everything. think about the hours you spend in this gear thing, now imagine investing that time in the music itself, music theorie etc. . hate to say it but the only way to improve your sound is to make better music. a good engineer knows that good musical stems will always sound great, regardless of what you do to them. of course you cant get wrong with some good hardware compression and eqing on your 2 bus but i guess thats just for us geeks in the end XD
You are 100% correct and I say it all the time on my channel. The gear, the plugins, the dAw really does not matter if you dont have a great song and know how to mix it. Its the engineer, not the tools. Having said that, the tools do matter and make a difference if you know how to use them. 90% of what you hear on the radio / streaming was either recorded and or mixed using some if not all analog gear. Especially "big time" records. That is a fact and of course there are some exceptions.
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy yes im totally with you. I just wished that someone told me this right at the start. Once you get better and you evolve as engineer the Hardware comes automatically as you reinvest in your Business, not the other way around.
I liked the kick sound on the hardware better and overall. But the plugins these days are pretty dame good if you don't have thousands to spend on hardware
The heritage level the drums. It more punchy & compact. the plugin doesn't achieve this effect. By the way i was not in the hardware vs plugin, but after buying the BLA Bluey, i really noticed the difference from the hardware regarding the leveling fx
Theres way more movement/space/depth with the hardware, as always. The hardware does, what you would want it to do: bring the space/room-sound to life. The plugins simply are not doing that for me - especially on stereo tracks
Hardware has a more hefty sound and wider, but you seem to lose the front to back clarity! The software sounds so thin. Doesn't even compare. Hardware sounds much better to me. You should try out the Solid State Logic Bus Compressor. Has more of an analog sound to it than Slate.

Agree with your assessment; hw is wider and deeper and it's not subtle imo. Very interesting video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!

They make really great stuff
Great compare and contrast bro.🙏🏾💪🏾✊🏾🥁🎹🎵
Thanks for listening
It seems like we are having a little phase issue with the heritage...I may be wrong.....
cheers
Thanks for watching!
The heritage was overtly ‘better’ sounding to my ears, and like you, I love the slate vbc plugins.
I’m about to buy the Drawmer 1978 hardware.
I hear great things about the Drawmer stuff

Thanks and the console would cost 3 times the price of decking out my entire studio with hardware.
Nice video, the snare is also "deeper" with the succesor...
just my opinion.
Cool, thanks!
Yeah Hardware is beefier for lack of a better word! But I could live with the plugins!

With compressors, I have always found that hardware has a better sound than plugins.
I like the sound without the compression here, plugins are fine but the successor just eats attack and squashes the bass drum
Agreeded!
So are we saying the successor is a bust? Or just in this situation and settings?

I dont have an SSL compressor but I do have a TK Audio BC500 buss compressor that we will test out soon.
The Heritage sounds like it's slamming the drums much harder. Also gives the drums more character, Slate plugins really sound boring in comparison.
