Out of curiosity: I noticed in your "PAL version," you had Dave selected as the character attempting to microwave the hamster. Only Razor and Syd will microwave the hamster. Was this done with the second version, too?
These guys really put effort into this video so sad to see this series go
This is one of the wierdest Pop Fiction episodes ever.
Why were they trying to use Dave put the hamster in the microwave in their PAL video? My guess is that they weren't playing the PAL version and just used Dave as an example of what would happen, because only Razor and Syd would be willing to do it.
There are two versions of the US Maniac Mansion, but neither of them removed the exploding hamster. Originally you could hand Dave the exploded hamster to give it to Weird ED, he'll get killed and turn "invisible", letting you walk around the Mansion freely but you aren't able to interact with much. This was only in the first print of the game, all later copies had it removed and you could no longer walk around as Dave's ghost, but you were very much still able to murder the poor hamster.
This entire video could have been done in 3 minutes if they had just did a quick Google search.
But wasn't it only but a few characters who would microwave the hamster? So showing Dave refusing to do it, proves nothing?
my question is WHY would you want to microwave a hamster!!

Sorry, but I thought this episode was pretty weak. This really did not deserve 13 minutes. It went on and on and on, and I found it boring.
Seconded... I like the retro stuff, and I love how deeply they usually delve into bugs/glitches etc, but this? I'm not going to slate it too hard, because I LOVE their work, I'm just going to go with what you said "weak"
This is mistaken. In the clip where the game refuses to microwave the hamster ("How sick!"), they are using Dave. Dave never microwaves the hamster. Only Sid or Razor will do it. Their test was done wrong.
Also, when Sid retrieves the exploded hamster, he says, "Shall I take white meat or dark meat?" If you give the exploded hamster to Weird Ed, he kills you.
There is a bug on the NES version that let's you get infinite exploded hamsters while keeping your original hamster alive. Open the microwave and put the hamster in, but do not close the microwave door. While the door is open, turn the microwave on. The game automatically closes the door as it starts, however, the game does not update the byte in memory for the microwave door as " closed", so the program still reads the microwave as technically being open. While it is still cooking, you can reach into the microwave and rescue the live hamster. When the microwave finishes it replaces the contents of the microwave (now "nothing") with an exploded hamster. You can take the exploded hamster and repeat, getting as many exploded hamsters as you want, although I'm sure memory will overflow if you did it too many times. If you give the living hamster to Ed he will put it in the cage. If you give him an exploded hamster, he still kills you, even though his living hamster is in its cage.
Also don't forget... Nintendo also overlooked the tentacle rape scene where you are raped to death by Green Tentacle. Copy the tentacle mating call record to audio cassette then play the cassette in Green Tentacle's room. GT rushes over to you, the screen then goes to your tombstone.
You can only microwave Ed's Hamster if you're playing as either Syd or Razor, because they're musicians...not joking either, I noticed when you guys did the test on the PAL version you did it as Dave, but you were playing as Razor when you microwaved Ed's Hamster successfully.
Yes, you're correct. I don't know why, but when they tested the PAL version they only do it with Dave. Dave won't microwave the hamster in any version of the game. I think pop fiction messed up. They need to revise and update this after further testing. I think you can microwave the hamster with Razor in any version of the game. I'm almost positive it.
Pliskin194 If there was a new version done, there would be a revision number added to the print of the game. All Nes games have a product code. For Maniac Mansion, its NES-JM-USA. If there was a revision, it would look something like NES-JM-USA-1 (similar to MOST copies of SMB3). I dont think ive ever heard or seen any revision of Maniac Mansion. What pliskin said is right about Syd and Razor.

You say 100,000 copies were edited to take out the exploding Hamster. I challenge anyone to find a single copy of this game where Razor or Syd will refuse to microwave the hamster on PAL or NTSC. Pop fiction says they prove that there have been edited copies made yet they don't show a single clip of them doing it correctly. Show me proof. Someone show me a clip of Razor refusing to do it. I have tracked down dozens of copies of the game. I can kill the hamster in all of them. I don't believe there's any version of this game where that can't be done. Pop Fiction I think you got this one wrong.

is it true that the PAL version was censored? I'm not so sure. In your video Dave is shown refusing to microwave the hamster in the PAL version, but he also refused to do it in the NTSC version. The only characters who can microwave the hamster are Syd and Razor.
Exactly this. All the versions even for PC and C64 would only let Razor and Syd do it. The other kids refused to.

I really liked Maniac Mansion, but never really understood what I was supposed to do and never got very far in it. I should dig out the C64 and give it another try.
Here's an idea for a future episode: See which versions of Cave Story contain a method to obtain the infamous Beast Fang without hacking.
I loved this game. And I'm pretty sure in Day of the Tentacle (the sequel to MM) you had to microwave a hamster to thaw him out from being frozen... nice homage. :)

Unfortunately, the verdict of this video is mistaken, this is Fiction. The NES lot check from the Nintendo giga leaks which is the authoritative source of what rom versions got approved for manufacturing only lists *one* NTSC version which is the Hampster trick one. A second NTSC version simply does not exist.

I played this in PAL territory and I clearly remember the hamster in the microwave...
Every version I've ever played has had the trick in it. I guess I've only played one of the first 250,000 copies and I've played several copies of it since '90. It's my favorite game of all time. Such a cool game. It's got everything cool - kickass music, humor, comedy. You can only do it with Syd or Razor though. You all tried to do it with Dave once and that's why it didn't work.
You would love thimble weed park it's on steam and I believe it's style and humor are inspired by maniac mansion it reminds me of it atleast
To the people who comment that the trick is being done wrong, you're right. However, it's still impossible to microwave the hamster in the PAL version, as trying it with Syd or Razor will instead net the comment "No way, man, these things are just loaded with cholesterol!"

you guys tried to prove that you can't microwave the hamster in the second version BUT you can't microwave the hamster with Dave in any version - he always refuses to do it along with most of the others. Razor and Syd are the only ones that will comply with the request to microwave the hamster.
Thanks to that one small over sight, this whole video has proved nothing :/

Pretty good overview. I have fond memories of playing this game back in the day and I remember the hamster trick quite well. I don't believe you covered this in the video but this trick could only be performed by *certain* characters in the game. I believe the punk characters would have no problem microwaving a hamster, but some of the "nicer" characters in the game would refuse to do it.

The 80's and early 90's saw a renaissance period of point and click adventures. "Deja Vu" and "Uninvited" come to mind as being awesome.
the one thing i noticed is that you used a different character in the other version to try and fry the hamster. if i remember correctly, i had the NES version and only the red headed chick and one other were the only ones who would nuke the hamster. all the others would refuse. so that might be way dave didnt want to kill the hamster

I love Pop Fiction so much, but I was disappointed in this one. It felt like something that could of been Pop Facts instead of a 13 minute video. I found it boring and not very interesting compared to their other videos like the Sonic 3 Michael Jackson one, or the Fire Temple Chant one, those were very interesting. I hope the new episode is more interesting though. Speaking of new episode, where is it? lol

On Xbox 360's game dungeon defenders if you go upstairs in the in the tavern on the bench to the left of the door that has the sign above it open, you can jump on the frame of the door and do what you did in the l is real 2041 to find the impossible coin except much faster and no crouching, you catch a glimpse of a room. I have the game and it's PAL, spanish version and i was allowed to explode the hamster and give it to Weird Ed, hell that terrified me as a kid! I cant forget that moment.
Not sure what's the huge deal about cooking a hamster. There are hungry families out there. By the way, the graphics is nice for a nes game.

You forgot that there’s third version of the game is Swedish version. What they says that version cannot even microwave the hamster.

Kyle Bosmon is kinda entertaining, and their I Love Last Gen special was pretty good, but beyond that this is by far their best content I agree. Fucking love it.

Wow, really? A 13 minute video about an exploding hamster? MM was a great game and although as a kid I only played it thru Day of the Tentacle, it still is one of my favorite classics. Just wish this video highlighted more of the game apart from a stupid hamster trick.
