Sarlaja Gaye, Nirlaja Baye , Ati Behiya jey thei thei jaiye... the status of music dance and entrepreneurship was given such low status by newly independent Odiyas. Not the ancient odias , they filled their universe with art music dance devotion prayer literature and sailed across the seas for trade.

Ohh...were you a time traveler or what? Stop giving a rosy image of the past...reality is often gray..not black and white as we would hope. Dance and Music had mixed receptions from public back in the day...as they do now. Even at the time of my Great great Grandfather time in 1870 ...he wrote in his personal diary that no respectable person would want their daughter to be a dancer or singer. It was meant for certain castes and clans who would produce children be unmarried and be a mahari. And village performance was often done by boys. It is cruelty indeed shown to be devotion for these orphan girls who had no place to go and certainly no wealth to inherit. Indian hypocrisy knows no ends..in one hand they enjoy music and dance in other hand they don't want their own children in it.

This unfortunate thinking is something visible across India in the 20th century probably due to the fallen stature of our arts during colonial period. Things have changed a little now.

What is visible here is that the Devadasis just like any other community had varied experiences unlike the wholesale negative labelling of the Devadasi system that the Indian state did. From the conversations presented here, it's clear that these women were confident in who they were and didn't care about what the world thought about them (which is ironically what today's feminists claim to be fighting to achieve although their activities are suspect). Also, unlike what the text books teach us, these women don't seem to have suffered any indignation. The Indian state seems to suffer from a version of white man's burden when it comes to Hinduism and its practices and destroys age old customs in the process.
