I rewatched The Fighter recently and I have to say Christian Bale's peformance has truly stood the test of time - such a charismatic and compassionate performance.

    4. Sam Rockwell - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri (2017) = Impressive Performance

So what do you think of my Rankings Luke 😊😊👍👍

Loved them Kev. It’s interesting to see how some people, love Maheshala in Green Book and others not so much. He’s been at numbers 1 and 10 on people’s rankings which is fascinating 🧐 same goes with Brad Pitt for Hollywood - some rank him high others rank him low.
It goes to show there’s more variety of opinions in this category. Wonder if that’ll be the same for BS ACTRESS.- we will find out soon 😊
Glad we see eye to eye on Simmons and Mahershala in moonlight.
I’m not as big a fan of Jared Leto - I liked what he did in DBC but it’s not my fav of the decade.
I agree about Andrew Garfield should’ve been nominated for TSN - if he had I probably would’ve rooted for him to win but I’m happy with Bale out of that bunch.
Thanks for watching and commenting (as always) 😁

Interesting ranking. I forgot most of the winners so this was a nice refresher. I say MORE rankings of Oscar winners. As far as JK Simmons, I wasn't as impressed with his performance in Whiplash as most people because I had already seen it in HBO's prison drama Oz which Simmons should have won multiple Emmys for. I also agree about Pesci over Pitt, but Cliff Booth will go down in history as one of Pitt's and Tarantino's best contributions to film so I'm more than cool with his win. As far as Django, I thought Waltz should've been in Lead leaving a spot for Sam Jackson who I thought gave the performance of his career as the house slave who hated all the other slaves, but, it is what it is. Looking forward to more of your ranking videos!

    • @LukeHearfield
      @LukeHearfield  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks so much for your awesome comment - I’m glad you enjoyed it 😊 I have t seen Oz but if Simmons is ever better in that then whiplash then I really need to check it out. 😁👍🏼
I’m happy Pitt won - sometimes your favourite performance of the group isn’t always who you want to win when you factor in their track records. Still lobe his performance In Ad Astra.
And yeah I get what you mean. It would’ve been nice to have seen Samuel L Jackson win for playing Stephen but he sadly didn’t make the cut that year (along with Leo) - 2 STRONG performances which are holding up better than some of the actual nominated performances in that group that year (Deniro for SLP in particular).
Thanks again for watching - let me know if you have any requests. 👍🏼😊

@@LukeHearfield Buddy, come on!! Did you take the effort to watch The Master(2012)?? Philip Seymour Hoffman in that movie trashes both DiCaprio and Samuel L Jackson by a country mile. That's the similar query I had with your list of best actor performances ranking as well. Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln was not better than Joaquin Phoenix in The Master at all and shouldn't have won that year. In almost every article, Joaquin and Philip Seymour Hoffman's performances are ranked as the absolute best of the decade especially Joaquin who has given the best acting performance of the decade in The Master and is ranked number 1 in most lists. The fact that you absolutely ignored these two impeccable performances is disappointing.

@@LukeHearfield Heheh oooh yeah, kinda differed here lots. I just found Bale to be boring in the film. I didn't like his win but I don't hate it as much as I did with Melissa Leo. Helena Bonham Carter just could've had one already. And also, a bit of a weak year and my choice to win was personally Geoffrey Rush among the nominees, then Andrew Garfield overall.

    • @mistergaga1701

2011 - Alan Rickman (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows 2)
2012 - Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master)
2013 - Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club)
2014 - Does this still have to be questioned? JK SIMMONS! (Whiplash)
2015 - Idris Elba (Beasts of no Nation)
      2016 - Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)
2017 - Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project)

i have an issue with how you judged Jared Leto harshly, in retrospect, for portraying a trans..while you gave Mahershala Ali a pass for portraying a gay guy...even though both men are straight.
i think both should be judged on equal terms. so, without the issue of Jared's trans role should've gone to a trans actor...then there's nothing wrong with his performance.
the same with Mahershala, in that even though he's a straight guy portraying a gay guy..that his performance was judged based only on his skill..not the politics surrounding it.
I love Barkhad Abdi's performance myself..but, I do think Jared's performance was daring..and truly deserving that win..without being judged for how outdated the movie is today.

Incredible list and pretty spot on with mine except for Leto who would be higher in my opinion. On the other hand, I just realized, Willem Dafoe could have been a two time Oscar winner in the entire decade with those two legit supporting performances in The Florida Project and The Lighthouse. Like he was already a tie with Sam Rockwell as the best supporting actor of 2017 and in my humble opinion, he was the best supporting of 2019 as well with the lighthouse, no disrespect to other guys who were nominated and Brad.

    10. Christopher Plummer- Beginners
Nothing against this but it would’ve been nice to see Jonah Hill win
    9. Christoph Waltz- Django Unchained
He’s still great but I think Leo or Philip Seymour Hoffman deserved it more
    8. Brad Pitt- Once Upon a Time....in Hollywood
He’s really just playing himself but that’s what makes it good
    7. Mark Rylance- Bridge of Spies
Subtle and probably deserved to win but Stallone or Ruffalo would’ve been cool to see
    6. Sam Rockwell- Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Great performance and definitely deserved to win
    5. Mahershala Ali- Green Book
IMO him and Viggo are the only redeeming factors of this movie and he’s arguably the main character
    4. Christian Bale- The Fighter
Great Performance but Andrew Garfield would’ve been amazing
    3. Jared Leto- Dallas Buyers Club
Heartbreaking performance but I’m probably not the authority on whether it’s socially acceptable
    2. J.K. Simmons- Whiplash
Not much to say, pretty legendary
    1. Mahershala Ali- Moonlight
My favorite performance from my favorite movie

Great picks and justification for your rankings. So much of what you said I kinda agree with. Pitt is kinda playing himself and yet the performance Is so damm awesome hahaha
Phillip Seymour Hoffman would’ve been a good choice that year but with him already winning before I think it would’ve been nice to have someone else win their first like Jackson or Dicpario - yet neither got a nomination.
I agree, green book is salvaged by great work from mortnesen and Ali - he is in my eyes a lead but I don’t mind that he won because he is so good in the role.
I also would’ve loved to have seen Ga4rfield nominated for the social network - I’m annoyed I forgot to mention that in my video haha,
And I love that Ali is your top pick for Moonlight - that movie is masterful.

Great ranking! Plenty of well deserved Best Supporting Actor winners.
    2010-
Happy with Christian Bale in The Fighter, he deserved it.
    2011-
Haven’t seen Beginners, my pick was Nick Nolte for Warrior.
    2012-
Happy with Christoph Waltz, even though him and Leonardo DiCaprio should’ve both been nominated in Supporting Actor.
    2013-
Happy with Jared Leto. He completely disappeared into the role and didn’t see an actor, more so a character. If he wasn’t nominated, I would go with either Michael Fassbender or Jonah Hill.
    2014-
This was my favorite Supporting Actor win of the decade, no doubt JK Simmons absolutely deserved it.
    2015-
Mark Rylance was great in Bridge of Spies but I was hoping Sylvester Stallone was going to win for Creed.
    2016-
Even if he didn’t have a lot of screen time, Mahershala Ali was great for the time he had. I would choose Jeff Bridges or Michael Shannon.
    2017-
Happy with this win, Sam Rockwell was terrific in Three Billboards. Loved the arc his character went through.
    2018-
I’m ok with this win. Mahershala Ali was excellent in Green Book. If he wasn’t nominated, I would choose Sam Elliott.
    2019-
Happy with this win, Brad Pitt was awesome in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Willem Dafoe was snubbed for The Lighthouse.

    10. Mahershala Ali in Green Book.

    9. Mark Rylance in Bridges of Spies.
Should have won: Sylvester Stallone for Creed or Tom Hardy for The Revenant. Also, Jacob Tremblay should have been nominated for Room.
    8. Christoph Waltz in Django Unchained.
Should have won: Leonardo DiCaprio Django Unchained (should have been nominated) or Philiph Seymour Hoffman for The Master.
    7. Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
He deserved it, just because Willem Dafoe was ignored by The Lighthouse.
    6. Mahershala Ali in Moonligth.
Should have won: Dev Patel (Lion) and Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea) were my favorites actors in the category but Mahershala Ali was good choicie too.
    5. Christopher Plummer in Beginners.
    He deserved it.
    4. Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club.
He deserved it but Michael Fassbender was good in 12 Years a Slave.
    3. Sam Rockwell in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
He deserved it. But i want to see Willem Dafoe win for The Florida Project.
    2. Christian Bale in The Fighter.
He deserved it and Andrew Garfield should have been nominated for The Social Network.

Thanks for watching and your rankings Robert 😁 our 1 and 10’s match - it’s just everything else in between is more jumbled 😁 hehehe
But it’s nice seeing how we differ. It’s really interesting to see where green Book Mahershala places for people- he seems to be the most divisive winner of the decade - some rank him at no#1 and others at #10 - I wonder if that’s because of the movie itself? Why does he come in last for you?
This category is so varied compared to my best actor and actress ranking vids. 😁 thanks again x

Nah tbh I'd probably choose Christian Bale, Christoph Waltz or Mahershala Ali (Green Book) as n.1 but I fucking loved JK Simmons in Whiplash too! They were all very good winners, only one though was Brad Pitt in OUATIH even though he was naturally great it wasn't my personal favourite and I kinda thought Leo was just as good if not better but Al Pacino could have easily beaten him for The Irishman but we all know it's just about time Brad finally won the Oscar he's been long waiting for.

Haven't seen Christopher Plummer's and Mark Rylance's performance yet.
    8. Mahershala Ali for Moonlight
I literally don't get the hype around this performance. he did nothing better than he did in Benjamin Button.
    7. Christoph Waltz
Leo should have won for Django, Jamie Foxx was way more Oscar worthy and I'm not gonna even start talking about Sam L. Jackson.... Literally they picked the only performance that was just solid at its best and I love Christoph so much.
    6. Mahershala Ali
Def a lead role and he put way more effort in this role than in Moonlight but still not so Oscar worthy
    5. Brad Pitt
    Best part of the movie
    4. Sam Rockwell
even though Woody was more deserving but Sam's character's arc was just so great, great writing, even greater acting!
    3. Jared Leto
Overdue, hate he gets the shit since Suicide squad, such a great actor and I loved him so much as Rayon, such a transformation that sometimes I wonder what he was doing in the male category :D That's how great he was
    2. Christian Bale
Fighter is special because of the great actors in it. He stole the show.
    1. JK Simmons
dude gave me the creeps, very intense performance.

I have just seen 5 of these performances and my ranking is :
    1. J. K. Simmons in Whiplash (what an intimidating Teacher! If I was his pupil I wouldn't stand him for a moment, all his veins and creases in his body plus his thunderbolt voice are showing authority.)
    2. Christopher Waltz in Django unchained ( He is so charming and fun in Django unchained that any time I watch it I will be mesmerized. And I think his performance in Inglorious Bastards is also great.)
    3. 4. Mahershala Ali in Moonlight and Green Book (He is really supporting, I must say I liked her better than the leads in these two movies. I also love his supporting character Boggs in Hunger Games too.)
    5. Brad Pitt in Once upon a time in Hollywood (He is great and I love both his performance and the movie itself. I've seen many of his performances like The curious case of Benjamin Button, 12 years a slave, Se7en, Fight Club, Fury, Troy, Inglorious bastards, Babel ... and I think this is his essence to win. But comparing to other roles, this role is not the most challenging and important in this category.)

You defo need to put three billboards on your watch-list Katherine , cause you get to see both Frances mcdormand and Sam Rockwell in such complex and hilarious roles. 😁
Glad to see you our JK Simmons at the top top. 💙
I also agree on Brad Pitt. He’s such a talented actor and he’s done so many great films but he’s kinda coasting on charisma in Hollywood. He’s really great in the role but it’s not his most challenging role he’s had. He should’ve been nominated for fight club. X

    2. Christoph Waltz
    1. Christian Bale

    🤔...
While J.K. Simmons gives the best performance of this group, Sam Rockwell's performance as Dixon in Three Billboards is my favorite. I love a good redemption arc.
Christian Bale is easily third, absolutely great performance and i'm glad he has an Oscar even though I was rooting for Jeremy Renner's chilling loose cannon bank robber that year.
Everyone else is kind of a wash.
I agree with you about Ali in Green Book. I loved his performance but it feels so fraudulent calling it a supporting role.
Rylance gave a very dignified performance but I definitely would have given it to Stallone.
Waltz was fun in Django but didn't leave nearly the same impression as he did in Inglorious Basterds. I would have given it to Arkin for Argo, as he stole the show and it was definitely more of a supporting performance.
Controversy aside, I definitely would have given Leto's Oscar to Barkhad Abdi.
Haven't seen Beginners, Moonlight, or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

I also thought Joe Pesci had the best performance that year, thought I was alone with that one, he’s so… not Joe Pesci in that one and it stuck in my mind more than Al Pacino’s. I honestly thought Mahershala Ali was good performance but it’s NOT supporting, and think he’s one of the best winners for Moonlight.

You are so dead on with Simmons topping the list, and I am happy you acknowledged Richard E. Grant in Can You Ever Forgive Me? He should have been the winner, as good as Ali was in his role but totally in the wrong category. The Academy really needs to do something about category fraud.

Our top 10s are a very different, and mines a top 8. as I've never seen Bridge of Spies and Beginners.
    8. Christian Bale (I just don't like boxing films I appreciate Bale was good but its not for me)
    7. Christoph Waltz ( Probs need to rewatch this film as I don't remember a lot about it, so he may go higher when I do)
    6. Mahershala Ali in Moonlight ( I just didn't get the hype!!, I thought the 3 actors who played Chiron were more deserving and they were all snubbed)
    5. Jared Leto (putting aside the whole sis actors playing trans characters debate, I believe he was the right winner that year, I just don't think the film is very rewatchable and its not the best role of his career)
    4. Sam Rockwell (between Rockwell and Wiliam Dafeo I would of been happy either way, both were amazing)
    3. JK Simmons ( yeah defo the right choice, I don't think i've enjoyed watching such a dickhead more)
    2. Brad Pitt (I think this is Pitts second best preformance, the first being fight club, it was just so much fun to watch and he looks amazing for his age, p.s I have to disagree with what you said about Ad Astra I found that film so boring)
    1. Mahershala Ali in Green Book (I know this is unpopular but I have to be honest and just ignore the politics behind to film , I just loved Dr Shirley so much, but ur right it was a joint lead really, I think because it began with Viggo maybe :S)
Keep up this the great Oscars videos, What do you think will happen oscars 2021? will it even happen ? :O

Hey Joe, loved hearing your thoughts.
Defo give Django a rewatch and ask yourself who the best supporting performance was between waltz, Dicaprio and Jackson.
Understand if you don’t like boxing movies - I’m not a fan either but I still remember how impressed I was by bale.
My theory for Chiron is that because if the equal amount of screen time they cancelled each other out. But I love mahershala I’m moonlight.
Totally get what you mean about Pitt in Fight club - travesty the film was so misunderstood upon release. I agree Ad Astra is boring but I see more of a performance from Pitt in Astra than I do in Hollywood. It’s a film that coasts by on Pitt’s charisma and star power.
And fascinating you love mahershala the most In green book - I love him too in the film- best thing about it for sure.
We do have very different rankings but I like that about this category - it’s very varied. I thought more people would put Simmons at number 1 but turns out I was wrong.
Thanks as always for your thoughts 😁

I do think there will be an Oscars ceremony (probably virtual like the Emmys) - it’ll be one of the more interesting years of the academy awards because of the domino effect of COVID and film releases. It would be unfair not to give the films that did come out this year no recognition whatsoever - they wouldn’t have a fighting chance if they delayed it by a whole year.
