    Viewed instead from a high likelihood 53-man roster positional (minimum) breakdown: 2 QB, 3 RB, 3 TE, 5 WR, 9 OL, 5 DT, 4 DE, 4 LB, 5 CB, 4 S and 3 specialists ties up 47 spots leaving just 6 remaining. I wanted to include a 5th LB and 5th S as highly likely but I'll leave those spots in the competition here. By taking that leap of logic and adding another layer by including favorites at the most likely remaining spots I see the battle for the remaining six 53-man roster spots likely coming from these 8 spots: QB3, TE4 (Tyler Davis), WR6 (Malik Heath/DuBose/Toure), OL10 (numerous options), DE5 (Brenton Cox), LB5 (Eric Wilson/Kristian Welch), CB6 (Kalen King/Robert Rochell), S5 (Anthony Johnson Jr/Zayne Anderson). I don't consider RB4 or DT6 likely nor do I think going even heavier at positions like WR7, LB6, S6 make sense for this roster. Keep in mind this is just an incomplete discussion on what I consider likely pre-training camp and much can change.
    The last time the Packers kept a 3rd QB was also the last time they kept only 5 WR. That was Jordan Love’s rookie season in 2020. If the team only keeps 2 QB will QB3 clear waivers and if they do get claimed then what’s plan B? If the team keeps a 6th WR they’ll likely need to show some special teams prowess to have any chance of being active on game day. Can Malik Heath or any WR6 option even get opportunities especially after factoring in the TE and RB depth.
    Although only 2 RB made the initial 2022 roster they were both established in Green Bay. I’d be shocked if only a free agent addition and a rookie made it this year. Dillon is likely to make the team but even if he doesn’t for some reason it won’t be to keep only Jacobs and Lloyd.
    Last year the Packers only kept 3 TE initially but claimed Ben Sims on waivers the next day. Their tendency to roster 4 TE may bode well for 2022 special teams snap leader Tyler Davis and the new kickoff rules may place even greater importance on the TE and LB body type.
    How will the transition to a 4-3 base defense factor into a Packers roster that has averaged just 4.4 LB? Despite his age, 2023 special teams snap leader Eric Wilson likely has the inside track for a 5th LB spot although possibly at the expense of keeping a 6th interior DL.
    Can the Packers keep 5 S and 6 CB? Safety is deep with X, 3 rookie draft picks and AJJ that could leave special teamers Zayne Anderson and Benny Sapp on the outside looking in. That’s if they can even keep 5 but the versatility of Bullard (S/NB) and Oladapo (S/LB) could justify those spots. At CB Jaire, Nixon, Stokes, Valenine and Ballentine seem likely with Kalen King and Robert Rochell both hoping to secure a potential 6th spot. I’m higher on Rochell than most and think this will be a battle to watch. The injuries at CB the last few seasons make depth imperative so lets not keep only 4 initially like last year.
    I don’t know what to think about the OL depth yet. Walker, Jenkins, Meyer, Rhyan, Tom, Morgan and Monk seem like safe bets to fill 7 of the 9-10 spots with the remaining 2-3 featuring competition from 8 more guys: Dillard, Glover, Jones, Tenuta, Newman, Jennings, Telfort and Smith.
    The new IR rule stipulates that on the final day of roster cuts, teams can now designate two players on its preseason IR list for return. With that change we’re unlikely to see a situation like last season where for a day the Packers had no LS on their initial 53 while they carried an 11th OL thru cut downs before placing him on IR.

    As usual, great description of the current roster situation - and it is very encouraging! My only criticism (a minor one) is that you place a little too much weight on whether a player has made a 53-man roster in the past. Sometimes that happens because the team has no other options and not because the player has roster-level talent.
    But again, you have a legitimate talent for introducing rational analysis into topics that are normally purely emotional.

    The Green Bay Packers made some necessary and big-time upgrades to the safety position in the 2024 offseason, starting with their biggest free agency investment in Xavier McKinney. The former New York Giants 2nd-round NFL draft pick is going to come in and make a substantial impact right away, along with former Georgia star Javon Bullard, one of the Green Bay Packers 2nd-round draft picks in the 2024 NFL Draft. With those 2 guys starting, the team has immediately upgraded over last year’s unit which has been pretty much completely overhauled. The Green Bay Packers drafted 3 safeties and I think we’ll see all 3 of them (Javon Bullard, Evan Williams, Kitan Oladapo) make the roster and be active on gamedays. One of them is going to have to beat out Anthony Johnson, who actually started some last year and got to play a little special teams as well. Go Pack Go 💚💚💛💛

    And I’m not sold on the Morgan pick… we don’t even know where he’s going to play on the line… and if he’s not LT, is he going to have a hissy fit? We should have drafted a CB in the top 100 picks… that’s our weakest position… HOPING AND PRAYING stokes plays well is not how you should operate… why not sign Gilmore for 6-9 million for ONE SEASON until we can address the position in next years draft?? He played above average in Dallas last year!!! He’d be a VALUABLE ADDITION TO this team and a great depth piece

    Is it too heavy to carry three QBs?

    • @joeo4496
      @joeo4496 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think the with the practice squad call-up rules now, three QBs in a little more likely so I wouldnt rule it out

    • @BrianClaycomb
      @BrianClaycomb 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It really comes down to whether or not they think they can get QB3 through waivers and onto the practice squad because the new rules allow the designated emergency QB to be a practice squad guy so it would be more advantageous for QB3 to take up a practice squad spot instead of a 53 man roster spot but with the Packers only carrying 3 QB on the 90 man roster losing the third to a waiver claim would mean starting over with someone else. I've wondered if Alex McGough is their emergency plan despite his position switch to WR. In that scenario if QB3 gets claimed then McGough becomes the practice squad QB and allows practice/scout team to continue running smoothly otherwise they're scrambling to bring in another guy and giving him a crash course and that could take up coaches time and potentially lower the quality of practice although I might be giving a QB3's role too much credit.
