Yes the necessity for s0d0my and other debouchery is a very strong driver for the West. We can't have anyone in the world refusing pride parades now can we. 🏳️🌈
For those who don’t know, CAMM is essentially ASRAAM with an active radar seeker and a cold launch booster. Personally I’d like to see the RF head as an option for ASRAAM.
During World War II, Great Britain indeed improvised and developed several simple yet effective weapons and platforms to meet the demands of war. Two notable examples of such improvisation are the Sten gun and the Sherman Firefly.
ASRAAM is a damn good missile. It's great to see just how good. This is the last thing it was built for, but it's so versatile you could easily believe it was built for the popup SHORAD role too. Honestly, I lament the lack of Western commitment to 🇺🇦 on a daily basis & wish we'd start giving them everything we have, immediately. Still, I shudder to think of where 🇺🇦 would be right now without strong, immediate 🇬🇧 support & leadership.
@lightsector1523 I will never give up. Your true supporters, who donate the most anyway, will never stop. We know, there's no choice. It doesn't matter what 🇷🇺 do & say. It doesn't matter how disappointing our Western government are. Or how many bots they send. The only thing that matters is 🇺🇦, 🇺🇦 lives & 🇺🇦 victory.
The term FrankenSAM only applies where Western and Russian/Soviet SAM systems have been combined, to allow the latter to use (typically older) Western missiles such as Sea Sparrow.
Man the cost saving by making a ground system such as this and the nasams use very common air to air missiles was a genius move. You can literally pump out missiles for airplanes and also your close range ground systems all using the same missile. With how cheap drone warfare is going there is gonna have to be a cheap solution to counter it. This isn’t a huge dent in the cost but it’s in the right direction for sure.
Is the ASRAAM compatible with any AIM-9 Sidewinder launchers? The F-16 Fighting Falcon, the AN/TWQ-1 Avenger, or even the MIM-72 Chaparral equipped with the ASRAAM would seem like a viable air defense option for Ukraine.
@@TheArmourersBench Ukraine already has several NASAMS system that can fire both AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles but it seems they've only actually used AMRAAMs so far. Speaking of NASAMS, Norway also has a system called NORSOL, a unified fire control system for NASAMS, RBS 70 MANPADS and Bofors L70 AA guns. I wonde if these FrankenSAMs an be integrated in a similar way.
@@TheArmourersBench I can say confidently that they use the same hardpoint design so fitting on a rail is a yes. If the system can be reprogrammed to work with AIM-9 though, that's another question.
Initially, from the title of the video, I thought this would be Ukrainian ingenuity. But then the video starts with stating the system is UK-built. So, it’s British ingenuity instead. Sounds about right.
Brilliant invention to help Ukraine. The USA is so impressed with the system that they are considering manufacturing their own version! Well done to the engineers involved with the design and manufacture of the system. The UK at its best. One improvement could be to use longer range missiles!!
The MBDA team need to quickly develop a box-type launch-canister to hold the missile AND find a suitable off-the-shelf rocket-motor to use as a launch-booster.
@@cease_requiem6034 I know about the cold-launch method however having an actual launch-booster (Cold-launched of course) will extend the ASRAAMs range perhaps to what its air-launched range is. Being launched from the ground dramatically shortens its range.
I worry the thinking that allows rapid prototype to deployment of good enough weapons systems to fill an urgent need is near a lost art in the military industrial complex of the west
I think the future of air defense lies along this direction, out produce your enemy with cheap mobile AA missiles platform and "good-enough" intercept missiles, but in the future transported on autonomous semi-AI controled ground vehicles forward deployed alongside conventional larger static air defense and the rest of the conventional AA mobile systems.. I could easily imagine a fleets of autonomous AFV's tracked and wheeled but designed for speed and mobility, always in shoot-and-scoot mode infront of the conventional manned mobile AA systems..

It's not that bad. An ASRAAM missile costs less than 300,000 USD, an AMRAAM 472,000 USD. Still expensive, yes, but we're not talking millions. Still, it may be a good idea to send Ukraine more Sidewinders. They cost more than ASRAAM on paper but several countries have a surplus of them and they are gradually being replaced by ASRAAM so the actual cost shouldn't be anywhere as high.
Yah the cost of the missiles isn’t what they’re concerned with. A couple million dollar missile taking out a drone and in doing so protecting a building or other infrastructure with dozens of not hundreds of millions of dollars is worth it.
These missiles were due to be removed from British army service soon anyway, as they were too old and were being replaced with newer ones. Better they be used here, then paying a bunch to have the missiles disposed off.
I've watched a few of this guys videos and can honestly say I don't enjoy them, he's clearly not a military guy and even if he is id have to say the guy is pretty un informed.

Given the short development cycle for this weapon, one can definitely say that necessity is the mother of invention.
Absolutely seems to be.
A lot of defense industry types will tell you that this timeframe is impossible.
