In my opinion, age is one of the biggest red herrings in sports. Dennis Rodman got drafted at 27 y/o. Giannis was drafted at 18. Age is only a factor for franchise level players who you are looking to build around for more than 5 years. The only exception is if their age will affect their play.
He’s also playing the lesser of the competition. Ain’t too many good C’s in the nba. No too mention he’s getting set up for easy buckets bub don’t get that. Neither do Sarr. Way easier to ball on a team that’s has it figured out than a team that’s freestyliny

Many of the European players coming in have been playing professionally since they were 16. Edey is the 4th or 5th option on offense if he’s starting. Glad Kenyon mentions the diff between guards and big men in terms of how many points you can get.
Comparing age to age isn't the move. They are on the same contract so Edey is cheaper and more experienced. You cant expect evaluate past the contract because you could be investing in someone who won't even be there after their first contract. So what Gil is saying really doesn't make sense to yall. He is saying the league is taking the gamble on young potential over older established players. The NBA is a business and teams are drafting for long term. If this was not true, why would a team in need of a center not draft Edey?
It’s simple if you’re a team that is already somewhat built and need someone to play a role right out of college they will draft older players, but if you’re a team in any kinda rebuild you’re going to draft younger so they can grow with other young pieces, grizzlies are in contender mode so Zach is a good fit. Zach ceiling is probably a poor mans Lopez but that’s solid around a team that has their main guys.
Gil bringing up age. Players rarely stay with one team their whole career. So when drafting a player, it’s not about age but what can I get outta this player for 7-10 years if they even stay that long. So by this metric, whether I get you at 19 or 22 it won’t really matter if you don’t stay with my team your whole career
Gil makes perfect sense.. Comparing a 23 year old rookie to a 19 year old rookie isn’t fair. He should be compared to his peers such as Jalen Green, Chet, Lamelo etc.
And comparing a 19-year-old PRO baller (Rissacher played three years in the French league) to a 22-year-old amateur ALSO is not fair. This is Rissacher's fourth year as a pro, so he should be compared to HIS pro peers.
Understanding everyone. As a rookie, your numbers now only matter till the rookie contract is up… after that you’re gonna get compared to others who are also your age. For an older player coming in, if in the first 5 years you can’t crack 15 pts per game you’re probably out of the league totally. As a young rookie, if your contract does not work out they can still send you to the G league to develop. Rookie stats only matter for your rookie season just so you can be recognised by teams and have people talking about you… after that, you better be playing on par with people your age else you’re out
How do they not get what Gil is saying? If Zack was drafted at 19 years old and developed in the nba he would be averaging way better numbers at 22 years old with 3 years experience.
For those who are new to this video, just a heads up: Gil is talking how NBA Teams give value to players. The rest are arguing against this from a player's perspective.
Gil made the age piece make sense for me. The rest of the couch finished college before going professional and I think that plays a factor in their perspectives. Teams want younger players and that was reflected in how the draft played out. Edy was the best but younger players in the same position were drafted before him. It was different when Kenyon was drafted. They wanted older players back then
Lexie has the best point here, it doesn't matter if they rookie contract is the same length, because at the end of it they are going to be extended or cut based on production. Only the really special talents are going to be given that time to develop

Gil was ignoring the fact that teams going for the younger player doesn't always pan out. He might be better than Zach at 23, but then Zach is going to be even better than now. It's not a given that he surpass him at any point in his career. Age isn't everything.

In my opinion, age is one of the biggest red herrings in sports. Dennis Rodman got drafted at 27 y/o. Giannis was drafted at 18. Age is only a factor for franchise level players who you are looking to build around for more than 5 years. The only exception is if their age will affect their play.
Edey playing 10 less minutes per game than the Carrington kid. Gil is tripping.
He’s also playing the lesser of the competition. Ain’t too many good C’s in the nba. No too mention he’s getting set up for easy buckets bub don’t get that. Neither do Sarr. Way easier to ball on a team that’s has it figured out than a team that’s freestyliny
@@LOWDOWN_SHOW that makes zero sense. Edey is drafted to be a C, there are few good Cs but the NBA is geared towards small ball now and yet Edey still makes an impact. That's how good he is.
Edey is also 4th choice on the court. You think the Grizz run the ball to him every time? They have Ja, Jaren or the wings before they choose him.
Kenyon was cooking when he said to include everything when taking age into account. Where Gil is talking straight age and it doesnt matter that Eddy is the 4/5th option on the team "Ja, Bane, JJJ then you have Santi and Eddy". Id says hes doing well for the team that hes in.
Edey avg 19 min a game nd carrington avg 29 mins i think edey doing good 🤷🏾♂️

Why does Gil take Zach Edey's older age into account, but not the fact that Zaccharie Rissacher played a few years of pro ball in France's top league? Rissacher should already be better NOW because his level of competition prior to the NBA draft was higher......
If Edey played for the Lakers Gil would be singing his praises.
Gil is a fan of Austin Reaves though, who went undrafted (at age 23!) and the Lakers later signed him.....
Kmart & Shad definitely has a point
Gil think because he's loud he isn't wrong. Portland had only 2 SG's on their team that year and 4 C's before drafting Bowie and still drafted Bowie. And Klay Thompson father was one of those centers 😅
They had to thought that Clyde would pan out great (and he did). Yet they still should have gotten Jordan. The same thing happened when Detroit should have gotten Carmelo, but they didn't because they thought Prince would pan out.

Haven’t read all the comments, but some things to consider: Edey has only played basketball for 7-8 years. Most of these other kids have 10+ years in by 19.
Many of the European players coming in have been playing professionally since they were 16.
Edey is the 4th or 5th option on offense if he’s starting.
Glad Kenyon mentions the diff between guards and big men in terms of how many points you can get.
Edey is a beast!! Watch Yuki Kawamara on the Grizzlies Too! 👀
Here is the man point that no one brought up that could destroy Gil’s ridiculous argument. Zach Edey has only been playing basketball since he was 15.
Edey getting rookie of the year because he fits well with the grizzlies but he isn't the focal point of that team.
Comparing age to age isn't the move. They are on the same contract so Edey is cheaper and more experienced. You cant expect evaluate past the contract because you could be investing in someone who won't even be there after their first contract. Injury, off/on court issues, ect. 23 or 18 you have them on the papers for the same amount of time. The 18 year old could be 2 years and out the league same as the 23 year old.

So what Gil is saying really doesn't make sense to yall. He is saying the league is taking the gamble on young potential over older established players. The NBA is a business and teams are drafting for long term. If this was not true, why would a team in need of a center not draft Edey?
Cuz he 22 😂😂 they don't understand the conversation
Kenyon shouting "coz they wanted to" is annoying. I guess Cleveland drafting LeBron first was because they wanted to not because he was the best pick
I love gil, but episodes like this make me think he got brain damage.
lol he just dont wanna admit he was wrong
@deeswagg21 facts! Same stuff he complains the mainstream media does
Yea I'm confused too
It’s simple if you’re a team that is already somewhat built and need someone to play a role right out of college they will draft older players, but if you’re a team in any kinda rebuild you’re going to draft younger so they can grow with other young pieces, grizzlies are in contender mode so Zach is a good fit. Zach ceiling is probably a poor mans Lopez but that’s solid around a team that has their main guys.
Kyle Kuzma came in after three years in college and average 16. Gil has a point.
Did Kuzma average that through his first 8 games, or his rookie season in general? Edey has only played 8 games so far.....
@brandonmadden654 then you're also dumb
Shooting twice as much at a lower efficiency. What’s your point?
Gil bringing up age. Players rarely stay with one team their whole career. So when drafting a player, it’s not about age but what can I get outta this player for 7-10 years if they even stay that long. So by this metric, whether I get you at 19 or 22 it won’t really matter if you don’t stay with my team your whole career
Gil is right. They picked a 19yo over 22yp due to Potential they are projecting at 22 the kid will be better and still 3 years younger.
Exactly
Right. I really don't get the confusion tbh lol
@@keamponsah11your missing the point the age has nothing to do what how good they both are NOW
Yooo when they put per 36 a game stats I was waitin for mcants to say where the body bag 😂😂
Gil makes perfect sense.. Comparing a 23 year old rookie to a 19 year old rookie isn’t fair. He should be compared to his peers such as Jalen Green, Chet, Lamelo etc.
You're just dumb
19:50 Sinner (Center) !! 😂
The centers drafted before Eddy was based on potential not skills level, and sometimes it works but most times it doesn’t
For those who are new to this video, just a heads up:
Gil is talking how NBA Teams give value to players.
The rest are arguing against this from a player's perspective.
24:50 Whenever I hear Kenyon take over the conversation, he reminds me of my uncle. "Fuck all that shit!"
Bro Gil's head went crazy at 20:00 😂😂😂😂
