So the correct way to label them is that they are literally different series.
Of course it stands on its own, it literally (loosely) covers the 1st 59 chapters of the source manga. The Monster World arc ending feels like a finale to the series had Takahashi chosen to end the series. Duel Monsters anime starts from chapter 60 meaning a continuation from the Japanese fan perspective. Regardless, Takahashi alternated between card game and different game after each arc in the manga starting from Duelist Kingdom to the end of the story. Yuugi Ou means Game King. Not Card Game King. The DM anime kept the non card game battles, so its really the spinoffs that deviated from the original vision of the series.

The new Shaman King reboot has given me burning hope the Yu-Gi-Oh! Will get a reboot to follow the manga as well. It's a long shot, but I can still dream right? I'd love to see the full original story in one anime.
If you mean the first series, then I would love to see a more faithful adaptation of the first few manga volumes that it covers. And hopefully also the permanent removal of the pointless anime-only character.

@@Tenkuu-san I agree... But I think we have a better chance of genetically modifying pigs to fly before we get a reboot. I'd settle for a least a better dub like they did for the old Sailor Moon, but 4Kids stopped that the last time it tried to happen. They need to fall into a really deep whole. 😑

As an older series (just turned 30 2 years ago), it didn't get a reboot (which it franky doesn't need imo), but it got a remaster first on DVD and then on Blu-ray. If something like that can happen for a series as old and less well-known than Yugioh, then anything is possible.

The "Duel Monsters" card game being one of them, and because it offered such marketing potential they refocused the entire franchise around it and it succeeded lol
