G'day Jason. I live work in Geelong's CBD and live in Lara. The blades on those wind turbines are 80 meters long. They are heading down to the new wind farms in the SW of Victoria. I drive to work along the road behind the refinery where you drove and up the North Geelong. I park at Rippleside Park and e-scoot along Drumcondra (where you drove in the video!) and into the CBD. I'd forked out $7800 in parking over the last 3 years in the CBD (parking for $175 a month at Westfield) so it's much cheaper to park for free at Rippleside and E-scoot into work on the bike paths. The road behind the refinery is being hammered by traffic now that the Spirit of Tasmania docks at Corio Quay. It used to be so quiet but now everyone coming from Melbourne to The Spirit and leaving the ferry heading to Melbourne, is advised by their GPS to go through North Shore and behind the refinery. This has caused the road to be absolutely smashed. At the moment there is extensive road work happening along the back of the refinery. You're a bloody ace on that bike! Go you! I'm glad I stumbled across your channel and look forward to lots more content with a Geelong (and Lara!) skew! 😃 Craig

Those wind turbines were insane 😲 You don’t realise how massive they are until you see your van next to one ,be pretty cool to see one of them being transported down to freeway 😁. Great video by the way , I enjoy watching the bike riding too , I’d be straight into a tree , lol.
I lived in Clifton Springs, on the Bellarine Peninsula, for 20 odd years and worked in Lara. Apart from Geelong central being a dump, personal opinion, the water front, and the paths along it between Geelong and all the way to Lara are some of the best views for riding and running. The drive around the Quay is one of the best. How can you not be impressed by the industry, machinery and huge ships. I’d drive to work that way quite often even though it was longer. I’d hazard a guess that many people from Geelong have never been to the You Yangs, which is their loss. Great walking, riding and views.

one way around the "sleeping in vehicles" thing is that most people think sleeping happens at night. But if done during the day and you become nocturnal, when the ranger turns up "I'm not sleeping here"
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces also notice that the freedom campers have stirred people too far in NZ and there's signs everywhere "no camping" and the rangers are ruthless - however, they only think "tent and campers" and these need flat ground usually and they fail to think about hammock camping - you don't need flat ground or clear ground for that and you can get real stealth. Another thing to look into if you haven't already, is geocaching. You discover some amazing places to camp that you'd never otherwise find. If you google GC9HDAJ that is a very nice spot, nicely tucked away with some very nice facilities.
We all have finite life span. So do oil wells, coal mines, buildings and all other things. What is needed is give technology a total life carbon footprint.
No easy solution unfortunately and well outside my power or influence to do anything about it. I have my solar panels and battery storage at least, so that's my green contribution 😁

The argument is always " how can we better fuel this lifestyle of ours " as though it's the only option available.. we've been made to believe that we can't be self reliant and live on less. It's crazy.

Thanks Sean. It certainly makes vanlife less relaxing, but there are always official camp sites that you can head to for a break. It is nice to drop in to them every now and then and have no stress over doing your thing 😂
I sometimes sleep in my Toyota Hiace work van. I think if you arrive late and leave early in a random suburban street, a local resident or official are more likely to view your van as belonging to a house resident or visitor. Also, a van in an industrial estate is not out of character. In one capital city, I have parked overnight outside a daytime community centre next to their own commuter vans. Works better if your van is not overtly a camper or motor home. Although not desirable due to noise, I don't think any council can stop you from parking in a major highway or freeway rest stop.
Agree with all your points, David. At the end of the day it all comes down to not annoying the locals and generally you'll be fine. My vans a little harder to blend in with, but I still find spots out of sight.
I’m one of those locals that you talk about at the end of your video that lives near a spot that attracts people that like to sleep in their cars; being on a hill that looks over several beaches and mountains. As a local and a van lifer I can see the arguments from both sides. As a person, I like to think that I am a bit more learned and pragmatic about it than others that live nearby. Whilst I’ve probably complained to the council only once in my time here I know that there’s been many, many complaints made by others. When you live locally you get to see every other van lifer (not just the occasional one) that comes around and parks on the reserve/road (whatever that may be), and see what they get up to, or perhaps the aftermath of what they’ve been up to. Whilst I believe that most van lifers are sensible, like yourself (and I hope myself), who leave no trace, and are very good about making ourselves invisible unfortunately there are some that are “not so” sensible and a leave stain on every other van lifer/houseless person. Those few are the ones that stick in the minds of locals, and pretty much taints every other van lifer. Whilst there are no problems I think locals don’t really mind people, in vehicles, going about their business. Thanks for the video J. Understand totally, Tony. Yesterday I was sitting by the water, some guy in a van pulls up on the grass, not the gravel parking area less than 10m away and proceeded to empty all his rubbish on to the nature strip. There was a bin right in the parking area no more than 10m from him.... I snapped some pics and sent it through to the council. I don't understand these people, but it takes all sorts..... apparently 🙄
Not really that hard to understand that people who have to pay the big property prices, taxes, rates etc etc that also pay for the facilities get antsy when folks turn up and expect to use it all and don't want to pay for any of it tbh. We live in a very popular tourist area and I occasionally see the odd van that is obviously set up to live in around town but I'm not sure where they're staying. What you say about certain elements is very true as well imo. I go offroading/camping and most of the sites that aren't monitored as much are a disgrace whereas those where you have to pay more money and are monitored by Rangers etc are much much better in my experience. Fact is that if you live in a nice or popular area and word gets around that people can stay there without risk then there will be more and more that do it. I notice that most want to be in the nice or scenic areas and not in the dodgy areas or out in the middle of nowhere. It's an interesting lifestyle for sure but hardly the free and easy concept that seems to get pushed so often.
You mentioned that you see vans around but not sure where they're staying. I take that as a good thing and suggests they're doing their best not to upset anyone. But yes, it's always that self entitled few that give us all a bad name. I really don't see many doing the wrong thing, but as you also say, the evidence of there efforts is too often visible but is not always campers making the mess either. Certainly not a carefree lifestyle, at least not if you try to do the right thing....

We won't agree but as I said others are paying for provision of the services you rely on for your day to day living. When we go away on a camping trip we always pay for everything that's required even though we could quite easily get away with not doing it at times. I get the appeal of the lifestyle, well some of it, and the fact that life is getting ever more expensive and that some end up living in cars/vans due to this or other reasons but I'm not sure how councils etc can make it all work tbh.

Tasmania is the vanlifers dream! No need to stealth camp. There are free campsites everywhere! Well, except for the major cities, but yeah, you can hide not far out of town.

Thanks for the feedback! Very much appreciated 😊 My bikes a 2016 Specialized Stumpjumper 29" wheels. Can't remember exactly which model in the line up, but it think it is the lowest spec carbon version. Biggest mod I've done is replace the 150mm front forks with Rockshox Lyric 170mm. Plenty of other changes but only to replace worn out parts. Very capable bike...more capable than me 😂
@phatonegaming yeah, that's a big difference. Plus if you get serviced at a Ford dealership you get 12 mths free roadside assistance. That's not bad value...
Thanks Andrew!☺️ I like Specialized as a brand, but they're really expensive now. The key with any type of bike is getting a spec that suites your riding, then taking a few for a test ride. I ride some enduro style trails, so 150 to 170mm wheel travel is what I'm comfortable with. Ask around some bike shops and see who will rent one out for a day so you can see if a particular bike agrees with you.

Wow. I must admit until this video I was oblivious to the regulations around staying overnight in car parks along the surf coast. I based my entire dream of buying a van and making oceanside van life my goal as a 60 something man. My dream was to fall asleep to sound of the crashing waves… Shattered.😢
Yeah, definitely shattered unless you do it in a caravan park. Sleeping at beaches is a sure fire way to get fined and you'll see most people don't risk it. But I get up early and go to the beach anyway. It's not all bad....and that sound of crashing waves gets really annoying at 2am 😂
Thanks for the discussion at the end of the vlog, Jason. You answered several queries I'd had floating about in the head. I found the info valuable, particularly coming from yourself who now has a good amount of lived-experience. What I don't understand is why councils don't open up areas dedicated to overnight camping; charge a small overnight fee, and restrict the stay to, say, 3 nights max in any 30 day period. Show grounds, for example. I realise I'm making it sound more simple than it probably is... Van life is not going away anytime soon, and numbers are ever-increasing due to many factors, the cost of living being a main driver.

My bikes a 2016 Specialized Stumpjumper 29" wheels. Can't remember exactly which model in the line up, but it think it is the lowest spec carbon version. Biggest mod I've done is replace the 150mm front forks with Rockshox Lyric 170mm. Plenty of other changes but only to replace worn out parts.

😂 yeah, daily showers is one thing I won't compromise on, particularly when I go for a bike ride!

LDV deliver 9 is about 10k cheaper, but not as well equipped as the Transit. Very similar in size though...yeah, tough decision.

@phatonegaming yeah, that's a big difference. Plus if you get serviced at a Ford dealership you get 12 mths free roadside assistance. That's not bad value...

I like Specialized as a brand, but they're really expensive now. The key with any type of bike is getting a spec that suites your riding, then taking a few for a test ride.
I ride some enduro style trails, so 150 to 170mm wheel travel is what I'm comfortable with. Ask around some bike shops and see who will rent one out for a day so you can see if a particular bike agrees with you.

Wow. I must admit until this video I was oblivious to the regulations around staying overnight in car parks along the surf coast. I based my entire dream of buying a van and making oceanside van life my goal as a 60 something man. My dream was to fall asleep to sound of the crashing waves… Shattered.😢
Yeah, definitely shattered unless you do it in a caravan park. Sleeping at beaches is a sure fire way to get fined and you'll see most people don't risk it.
But I get up early and go to the beach anyway. It's not all bad....and that sound of crashing waves gets really annoying at 2am 😂

Thanks for the discussion at the end of the vlog, Jason. You answered several queries I'd had floating about in the head. I found the info valuable, particularly coming from yourself who now has a good amount of lived-experience. What I don't understand is why councils don't open up areas dedicated to overnight camping; charge a small overnight fee, and restrict the stay to, say, 3 nights max in any 30 day period. Show grounds, for example. I realise I'm making it sound more simple than it probably is... Van life is not going away anytime soon, and numbers are ever-increasing due to many factors, the cost of living being a main driver.
