I think the public has been incredibly kind to him, and to put it into context how many of us work in a position where so many missed targets is acceptable, I'd have been sacked after a debacle like wembley, and I wouldn't have expected anything less, the guy has had multiple chances and not got over the line, he's a nearly man, why present him as anything else, and why is honesty about his lack of success, being rebranded as personal attack-Personally I think he is probably a nice guy,but as a manager, Over cautious, Lacking in ideas, and lacking the courage to make decisions in game, Nothing about his demeanour suggests the drive or passion needed to inpsire, and that to me was clear in the final, Spain looked and played like a team, we looked lost , and looked like a collection of individuals.

'we have the best players' I've supported England since 1996 and I hear this every tournament yet when we come up against any team with decent technical ability we struggle whether its Paul ince, Paul Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard, Bellingham, Foden, Rice or whoever its always the same.
I think we have the worst manager narrative is more accurate. How are Bellingham, Foden, and Harry Kane not considered "the best players". They were literally the best player in their position in the top three leagues. Based on statistics and overall play for the past couple of seasons, Spain has maybe one or two players, like Rodri, who could make it into the England team. The difference was Spain had a better tactical manager who played to their strength. If you switched managers, no question that England would have won.

Argentina had messi for almost 20 years and just recently started winning, Southgate was not up to task in regards to tactics, but he was the best manager since 1990 in terms of results. The FA has a lot of soul searching to do, and I think that whole board resignation should be on the cards.
Englands problem has always been a lack of midfielders that can control a game against good teams. Haven't had one since Scholes and Sven played him out of position. Rice isn't it and that's why Arteta plays Jorginho or Partey next to him.
England players have to be treated like school boys for them to play well in a tournament unfortunately. Other countries are not like this (Germany for example). It's the bizarre historical arrested development of the England players. I am English and I have watched this for years. If this ever changes you might see something.

It's reasonable despite England got in the deep in of several tournaments under Southgate. England were given some of the easiest runs not just in this Euro, but in 4 consecutive tournaments. This is Englands golden generation, and they play like a small team, getting over the line with the slimmest margins against some of the weaker teams. This was rigged for England to win tournaments, and they can't even do it with everything stacked for them. And worst of all, they have not impressed in one single game.
England has won 1 tournament in your whole history so by Rory’s logic you have only ever had 1 good manager

The reality is, any Jo Bloggs on the street with not a second of coaching experience would be expected to get the results that Gareth has over his tenure, he's never once beaten ANY side that not everyone didn't expect to beat. If he had done that even once, then he would've done a great job. Plenty of far lower ranked teams than England do it tournament in tournament out, Morocco, Croatia, Greece to name a few and they have no better players than England, so why can they do it?
Shebahn seems to think that the England head coach job is equivalent to running the school under 11s team: 'Oh he did his best, bless him'. Please, Shebahn, if you can't take criticism you shouldnt be in the damn job. Furthermore Southgate got it RELATIVELY EASY compared to Robson, Hoddle and others, who, with much less talent at their disposal, did a better job quite frankly.

Objectively in about 9 positions they had some of the top performers of the season as a whole. Kane, foden, bellingham, saka, palmer, rice, watkins, stones, trent. Couple that with reliable high class players and players who have had good seasons such as walker, gordon, mainoo, pickford, bowen, eze… At the VERY LEAST, england fans shouldnt have had to watch mind numbing games against bosnia, denmark, slovakia, slovenia and Switzerland with narrow victories/ draws. I have been watching England since the 1960s and most fans are clueless, like Rory. Every England manager since Ramsey in 1966 has failed, Southgate was hired because the team had become a joke. The semi-final in 2018 was a surprise. England does not produce players like Messi, Ronaldo, Maradona, Modric, or Mbappe. Frank Leboef who played for Chelsea and won the World Cup and the Euros with France, believed that only three English players would get into the French team. He doesn't understand why England fans think they're blessed with world-beating players.

If you gonna win an international trophy you need at least a couple of world class player. England has one ( Bellingham and that’s fringe) a world class player is a player who can crack any starting eleven in the world.. Spain had three in their starting eleven ( Lamine, Carvajal and Rodri)
problem with England is that they just take out their best players. You need balance. For example the golden generation with Gerrard and Lampard and Scholes.. at that time you should just have benched one of Lamps and Gerrard do balance out that midfield.. Spain had Iniesta, Xavi, Busquets, Alonso, Fabregas, David Silva and Del Bosque still benched world class players because he wanted balance

I'm English, and Rory doesn't represent all of us! We clearly do overrate some of our players here in England. Some of them are very good, two or three are great, but football is a team game, and this England team never seem to be more than the sum of their very expensive and well paid parts. Why that is, is an interesting question, with a number of answers I think. England still needs a footballing identity. The truth is probably somewhere in between what Rory is saying and those who want to praise Southgate for making the England camp less of a basket case than it has been previously. Managers are always accountable for losses. It doesn’t matter if the manager set up the right tactics or the players didn’t turn up on the day. When Man City lose - Pep is in discussion. When Man Utd lose - Ten Haag is in discussion. It's hardly about players' poor performances.
It's about time we change the trajectory of these discussions because modern day players get away from poor performances so easily and the manager gets all the blame.
I hear fans saying Bellingham and Foden shouldn't start and be subbed off because they played poorly yet at the same time, we rate both players world class. Instead, they want Palmer and Gordon in the starting lineup but these are the same set of fans that do not regard them world class. Some English fans experience cognitive dissonance.

About the only time i have agreed with Rory
Managing your public persona, is in no way comparable to failing to coach an excellent squad to produce cohesive football. So please stop making excuses for someone who should have chosen a balanced side, this is so basic. I just want to see cohesive, well structured football and then perhaps through a consistent basis of playing a formation that the players are used to playing, then maybe we can talk about success. It's embarrassing that she has the cheek to hide behind the supposed Mal treatment of Gareth Southgate, she should cast her mind back to 92 and then shebang would have a little more understanding on this subject.

I for one is not sad to see the back of GS and I probably speak for millions of England fans. He’s taken England to 4 major finals and not won one and had we had a more attacking minded manager, I’m convinced England would have won one them, especially Euro 2020.
He takes injured players ie Luke Shaw, who does not feature till the SF. Plays players out of position. Doesn’t have the boxxocks to drop Kane, I said to my Daughter during the first group game, Kane isn’t fit. Takes Gordon a naturally left sided player and plays him for 4 mins. Its was a joke.
I actually wished we got knocked out by Slovakia, so I didn’t have to watch anymore turgid football.
So no, I won’t regret Southgate resigning, he should have quit after Euro 2020, then we might just of had a manager who could have actually got this group of players playing enjoyable attacking football, instead of the dross we did watch.
