The creature and scot glens character were the same person, split, good separated from evil. That is why at the end he, the bad, says "You" to scot glens character. Also their neck, appears the same in some shots.
This, is an amazing movie! Went to see it when I was in the 8th grade. I'm hoping for a special edition bluray release. Thank you so very much for sharing this!
Depends on who owns all the original film footage, and indeed if it still exists,I would love to see a remastered director's cut. There is a FB page, crowdfunded, which aimed to make a film on 'The Keep's' sometimes troubled production....
This could a job for Arrow video. This is a title right up their alley. The extra footage must be stored somewhere. Maybe they could convince Mann to do a re-edit?
Good vid mate, should start making em a bit longer and go indepth. This right here is a movie i've wanted the workprint for, for a LONG TIME. I used to think that was impossible due to age and such but ya know what? I have in my possesion the uncut super mario movie, a workprint of ALIEN 3, the original ARCADE movie's CGI and Death Machine Directors cut. I now have hope for this again, and if it is found prepare for some of the biggest fan edits you've ever seen o.O The community of the keep go nuts for bootlegs of it's ost, imagine what they will do once that workprint is found ((and its close to 3 hours long)).
The Keep reflects upon Michael Mann's visionary talents in much the same way that Alien 3 reflects back on young David Fincher. If Paramount ever released a Director's-Cut of The Keep, I'd be fearful of dying the next day, perfectly content with a childhood dream fulfilled...
I never got the impression of dreams being pivotal in that movie, (except being mentioned by the caretaker), but I can see how Mann`s hybrid vision was very interesting and I think we were robbed of his vision by Paramount by not seeing Mann`s directors cut version. What a pity.
Went to see this when it came out. Have a great love for it. Have the laserdisc, the recent dvd release and the official vinyl soundtrack. There’s a scene where molassar is moving towards Ian mckellen and Alberta Watson. It’s three or four shots are taken from an old black and white horror film that eludes me.
A couple of years ago , some obscure company here in Europe released a unofficial DVD that’s clearly just lifted from an old worn out VHS. The quality is terrible but I don’t care. I’ve got it. Would love to have the 3.5 hour version more.
Agreed. I love Heat, I love most of his films for that matter, but Manhunter has something magical about it. What a comeback after The Keep and the mess of that production!
I hope one day we’ll see the directors cut. The final edit was a disaster from the cutting room floor. Error: man’s cut was 3 1/2 hours long, not 2 hours! Almost the entire film was cut!
I had that feeling watching it...that somethings were cut out at important points. Even a small thing means a lot in cinema. So sad for Mann as most of his work is so much better.
The Keep is an absolute masterclass in film making….even with the chop up. I never had a problem with it being badly cut….but when I heard there was once a 3hour version well that’s something else. I once stumbled upon a web site dedicated to finding the lost footage. These guys where aiming to knock on the rite doors & somehow recover the missing footage. Apparently Mann actually disowned the move, which kinda made any chance of a directors cut less likely. I guess at the end of the day it could be laying in a room at Paramount, so who knows. I think lack of interest from the general public would make it not financially viable? I’ve recommended the film a few times only to be told…..what a load of crap🤣 I’ll never forget the fist time I cast my eyes on the tv & my bro & his mate were watching it…..the scene was where Scott Glens character had been shot & had fallen into a pit…..I new instantly I was watching something very different….something far superior to anything about at that time. Mann had an edge on movie reality that James Cameron to 20years later to find….& still has never managed to get out of his actors what Mann did in the Keep. It’s one of the most underrated movies of all time!
Such an amazing movie. A shame it was chopped up by the studio, but Mann did himself no favours by meddling with Nick Marley’s outstanding make-up FX and Molasar prosthetic suit. He destroyed the Molasar suit by painting it with blackboard paint, without anyone’s knowledge, during a break in filming. This prevented the actor from being able to move without the paint cracking and flaking, giving the final scenes where Molasar is motionless and seemingly powerless, when in fact the suit was finely detailed and was built to accommodate a lot of movement, with actual muscle movement possible, due to Maley’s intricate and groundbreaking sculpt and design.
Don't make a horror movie unless you want to make a horror movie. Taking it "out of the genre into a dream" is an incoherent and ill-advised idea. Mann should have concentrated more on making the movie make sense.
Don't stop making these the eventual weight of content will reach others. Keep going!
Thanks Patric - I appreciate your kind words
@@CelluloidHeroes always sir
best review on this movie I've seen!
Watched it last night, loved the visuals and the music. I think it would greatly benefit from a remaster. It’s a really interesting film. Great video.
The keep is a movie that both fascinates and frustrates in equal measure. I enjoyed your video, thanks
Thank you for making this.
How I’d love to see Mann’s version of this dream.
Love me some The Keep. I even followed up by reading the book. Fairly different from the movie, not bad.
Mann is the man, etc.
I might give it a read at some point but I love the film too much. Thanks for watching and commenting!
You should read the whole series of books really good
5 star narrative.
Would like to see you do more.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I wonder what it would take to get Michael Mann to release that 3.5 hour version he originally made?
The creature and scot glens character were the same person, split, good separated from evil. That is why at the end he, the bad, says "You" to scot glens character. Also their neck, appears the same in some shots.

The production set pieces are outstanding.
This movie was a masterpiece
if we could see a directors cut!
I agree 100%. The only "horror" movie I care to see.
You deserve so much more attention! Your analysis is off limits. Keep it up!! :)
Great video
Michael Mann is a very intelligent fella
I’m glad a young Mr. Connery is finally narrating TH-cam videos.😂
This could a job for Arrow video. This is a title right up their alley. The extra footage must be stored somewhere. Maybe they could convince Mann to do a re-edit?
Fascinating story keep it up. 5/5
Cheers Dave !

I read the keep and kept reading F. Paul Wilson from that point on. One of my favorite authors.

#ReleaseTheMannCut!
Thanks for posting
Hadn't heard about this one. Thanks 👍
A profoundly wild film.

Very enjoyable movie
Michael manns MANHUNTER is by far his best!
Agreed. I love Heat, I love most of his films for that matter, but Manhunter has something magical about it. What a comeback after The Keep and the mess of that production!

This is brilliant! Need to do more films, exorcist 3?
2:55 I never knew there was a previous design of the Discovery in *2001*
Jus stumbled on this and subscribed and liked good narrative from a fellow scouser to another all though a posh sided accent 😉👍
Same 😂
I had that feeling watching it...that somethings were cut out at important points. Even a small thing means a lot in cinema. So sad for Mann as most of his work is so much better.
Anybody else stop this video halfway through watch The Keep immediately....or was it just me?
God that accent! I thought that the narration was in Dutch at first, then realized it was Scouse! 🤣🤣
Haunting
Awesome movie
F. Paul Wilson just signed the option/purchase agreement with Greg Nicotero to make a new movie adaptation of the book.

I love this movie. I had hoped Overlord would have a similar vibe, but it didn't.

quote me in your sources please
Style over substance best sums this film up.

He is the number 1 director in the whole world.
Compared to mine dat 😂👍
